Imagine pulling a signed card of Lionel Messi from a Topps pack, only for PSA to deem the autograph a fake— a nightmare situation experienced by collector Nick Bruce and his son. With rumors swirling that Messi's brother may have signed some cards, Topps offered to replace Bruce's card. The controversy highlights growing concerns over authentication in the sports card industry, as collectors have long trusted manufacturers to guarantee autograph legitimacy.
The massive, 560-pound blue bird logo that once adorned Twitter's San Francisco headquarters has found a new owner, fetching $34,000 at RR Auction. This sale is part of Elon Musk's ongoing efforts to liquidate assets from the company's rebranding to X. The hefty sign joins a list of Twitter relics that have hit the auction block, including furniture, coffee makers, and other office fixtures. Where the new owner will place the sign is still a question.
Michael Jordan's first game-worn Bulls jersey, donned during his 1984 preseason debut, has been sold at auction for $4.2M. Only 2,000 people attended the game, played in Peoria, IL, and Jordan wore a recycled jersey. While the big sale showed a sizable increase from the $800 the piece originally sold for back in 1985, it's not the most expensive game-worn Jordan jersey to sell — that title is still held by his 1998 NBA Finals Game 1 jersey, which sold for $10.1M in 2022.

A bottle of Old Rip Van Winkle bourbon broke the record for most expensive post-Prohibition American whiskey sold at auction, hammering for $125,000. The bottle, a 'Van Winkle Selection', is a blend of 15-to-20-year-old whiskeys that was originally auctioned off for charity back in 2007. The whiskey was blended by Julian Van Winkle, who's son Preston designed the bottle's label, and the sale crushed the initial estimate of $50,000
Live e-commerce and card breaking platform Loupe has launched 'Loupe Market,' a new in-app marketplace focused on mid-to high-end single sports cards. Sellers on the platform must be approved and undergo a vetting process, and fees on the platform, which decrease for higher priced items, start at 10%. This expansion aims to create a comprehensive card-collecting ecosystem within the Loupe app.
A long-lost Omega Speedmaster, once owned by Apollo 11 astronaut Neil Armstrong, has surfaced in the collection of his family. This particular Speedmaster wasn't the one he wore on the moon—NASA-issued timepieces stayed with the agency—but it was a personal watch that he wore frequently. With vintage Omega Speedmasters already commanding high prices in the collector's market, an Armstrong-owned piece will be considered a grail-level acquisition when it hits auction.

LeBron James on critics saying he doesn't have scoring skills

LeBron James on critics saying he doesn't have scoring skills LeBron James became the NBA's all-time leading scorer two seasons ago when he surpassed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in February 2023 during a game between his Los Angeles Lakers and the Oklahoma City Thunder. Since then, he has surpassed 40,000 points, and he currently has 42,184 points for his career during the regular season, as well as 50,473 points in the regular season and playoffs combined. Still, some don't consider him an elite scorer. He isn't quite as skilled as some of the other leading scorers in NBA history, such as Abdul-Jabbar, Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant, and it has even led some to downplay his accomplishment as the all-time leading scorer. According to critics, James doesn't have "a bag," meaning that he doesn't quite have the skill-based moves that other superstars possess. He has indeed always relied heavily on his athleticism and physicality, although he has greatly improved his 3-point shooting over the last two seasons. During a recent episode of his "Mind the Game" podcast, which he co-hosts with Hall of Famer Steve Nash, James reacted to those critics and tried to downplay the importance of having a highly refined skill set (h/t Lakers Nation). 'When I was growing up, it wasn't talked about. The least amount of dribbles to get to where you need to get to was what I grew up watching. Michael Jordan wasn't dribbling 1,000 times to get to his spot and raise. Isiah Thomas, as great of a handle as Isiah Thomas had, Isiah would get to his spot and raise. All these guys that I grew up watching, Grant Hill can get to his spot and bury you. [Glenn] Robinson, I get to my spot and I'm burying you. Allan Houston, all these great players that I grew up watching and admiring, Penny Hardaway. They could dribble the basketball, yes. Tracy McGrady, even as great as Tracy was, it was I'm bigger than you, I'm gonna get to the spot in the least amount of dribbles. Kevin Garnett, just good footwork and getting over the top, if I'm bigger than you and I get you on my shoulder or get you on my hip, I'm gonna use my size. I see it all the time, I be on social media and it's like 'LeBron has no bag.' LeBron has no bag and I'm sitting over there with 50 billion points… Just play the game the right way. And I hope that our younger generation doesn't get swamped by saying OK, I need a bag, I need a bag. Work on your game, know what you're gonna be good at in order to help the team and prove the next year to be a better player. You come in as a guy that's offensive game is not developed, you come in and you defend, you get extra possessions, you get extra rebounders for the guys. OK, then next year you work on your game in the offseason. It's only one or two, three guys maximum that's gonna be handling the [expletive] hold anyways. We don't need you to have a bag. We have the luxury of having three guys with us two and AR, but not many teams have three guys that's gonna be handling the ball like that anyways. You can make $200 million in the NBA if you defend and shoot a corner 3-pointer.' Even at age 40, and even without the same level of scoring skills as some others, James has continued to excel. He averaged 24.4 points, 8.2 assists and 7.8 rebounds a game while shooting 51.3% from the field and 37.6% from 3-point range. With Luka Doncic now by his side, one can easily see the game becoming a little easier for him now that he has been playing off the ball more often since Doncic's arrival. Many have wanted James to play off the ball for years in order to lessen his workload and increase his efficiency. No matter how skilled or unskilled one thinks James is, many feel his career scoring mark will never be surpassed.

Denny Hamlin wins at Michigan for his 3rd NASCAR Cup Series victory of the season

BROOKLYN, Mich. — Denny Hamlin is pulling off quite a juggling act. Hamlin outlasted the competition at Michigan International Speedway for his third NASCAR Cup Series victory of the season and 57th of his career, juggling his roles as a driver, expectant father and co-owner of a racing team that's suing NASCAR. 'The tackle box is full,' Hamlin said Sunday. 'There's all kinds of stuff going on.' Hamlin, in the No. 11 Toyota, went low to pass William Byron on the 197th of 200 laps and pulled away from the pack to win by more than a second over Chris Buescher. 'Just worked over the guys one by one, giving them different looks,' he said. Ty Gibbs finished third, matching a season best, followed by Bubba Wallace and Kyle Larson. The 44-year-old Hamlin was prepared to leave his team to join his fiancée, Jordan Fish, who is due to give birth to their third child, a boy. If she was in labor by Lap 50 or sooner at Michigan, he was prepared to leave the track. Hamlin said he would skip next week's race in Mexico City if necessary to witness the birth. To add something else to Hamlin's plate, he is also co-owner of 23XI Racing with Michael Jordan, which is involved in a lawsuit against NASCAR. He drives for Joe Gibbs Racing, which hadn't won at Michigan in a decade. 'I think it's the most underrated track that we go to,' said Hamlin, who has won three times on the 2-mile oval. Hamlin became JGR's winningest driver, surpassing Kyle Busch's 56 victories, and the 10th driver in NASCAR history to win after his 700th start. 'It feels good because I'm going to hate it when I'm not at the level I'm at now,' he said. 'I will certainly retire very quicky after that.' Hamlin's team set him up with enough fuel to win while many drivers, including Byron, ran out of gas late in the race. 'It really stings,' said Byron, the points leader, who was a season-worst 28th. 'We just burned more (fuel) and not able to do much about that.' Hamlin, meanwhile, wasn't on empty until his celebratory burnout was cut short. Pole-sitter Chase Briscoe was out front until Byron passed him on Lap 12. Buescher pulled ahead on Lap 36 and stayed up front to win his first stage this season. Ryan Blaney and Chase Elliott took turns with the lead before a crash involving Alex Bowman brought out the red flag on Lap 67. Byron took the lead again after a restart on Lap 78 as part of his strong start and surged to the front again to win the second stage. Carson Hocevar took the lead on Lap 152 and was informed soon thereafter that he didn't have enough fuel to finish, but that became moot because a flat tire forced him into the pits with 18 laps to go. Hocevar faded to a 29th-place finish, a week after he was second to match a career best at Nashville, where he created a buzz with an aggressive move that knocked Ricky Stenhouse Jr. out of the race. Bowman hit a wall with the front end of his No. 48 Chevrolet as part of a multi-car crash in his latest setback. 'That hurt a lot,' he said after passing a medical evaluation. 'That was probably top of the board on hits I've taken.' Bowman, who drives for Hendrick Motorsports, came to Michigan 12th in points and will leave lower in the standings. He has finished 27th or worse in seven of his last nine starts and didn't finish for a third time during the tough stretch. Defending race champion Tyler Reddick qualified 12th, but started last in the 36-car field because of unapproved adjustments and rallied to finish 13th. NASCAR shifts to Mexico City for its first points-paying international race in modern history on June 15. ___ AP auto racing:

Getty's landmark UK lawsuit on copyright and AI set to begin

By Sam Tobin LONDON (Reuters) -Getty Images' landmark copyright lawsuit against artificial intelligence company Stability AI begins at London's High Court on Monday, with the photo provider's case likely to set a key precedent for the law on AI. The Seattle-based company, which produces editorial content and creative stock images and video, accuses Stability AI of breaching its copyright by using its images to "train" its Stable Diffusion system, which can generate images from text inputs. Getty, which is bringing a parallel lawsuit against Stability AI in the United States, says Stability AI unlawfully scraped millions of images from its websites and used them to train and develop Stable Diffusion. Stability AI – which has raised hundreds of millions of dollars in funding and in March announced investment by the world's largest advertising company, WPP – is fighting the case and denies infringing any of Getty's rights. A Stability AI spokesperson said that "the wider dispute is about technological innovation and freedom of ideas," adding: "Artists using our tools are producing works built upon collective human knowledge, which is at the core of fair use and freedom of expression." Getty's case is one of several lawsuits brought in Britain, the U.S. and elsewhere over the use of copyright-protected material to train AI models, after ChatGPT and other AI tools became widely available more than two years ago. WIDER IMPACT Creative industries are grappling with the legal and ethical implications of AI models that can produce their own work after being trained on existing material. Prominent figures including Elton John have called for greater protections for artists. Lawyers say Getty's case will have a major impact on the law, as well as potentially informing government policy on copyright protections relating to AI. "Legally, we're in uncharted territory. This case will be pivotal in setting the boundaries of the monopoly granted by UK copyright in the age of AI," Rebecca Newman, a lawyer at Addleshaw Goddard, who is not involved in the case, said. She added that a victory for Getty could mean that Stability AI and other developers will face further lawsuits. Cerys Wyn Davies, from the law firm Pinsent Masons, said the High Court's ruling "could have a major bearing on market practice and the UK's attractiveness as a jurisdiction for AI development".
