IMD issues warning for thunderstorms in Kerala
Kochi: IMD issued a warning for thunderstorms in Kerala until Wednesday.A yellow alert was issued for Pathanamthitta, Idukki, and Malappuram on Tuesday, while Ernakulam, Malappuram, Wayanad, and Kannur were on alert for Wednesday.
Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds with speeds reaching 40-50 kmph are very likely to occur at one or two places over Kerala until Wednesday.It was reported that the trough from Saurashtra to the east-central Arabian Sea across the northeast Arabian Sea persists. An upper air cyclonic circulation is likely over the southeast Bay of Bengal adjoining the south Andaman Sea until Wednesday. The north-south trough from Marathwada to Gulf of Mannar across interior Karnataka and Tamil Nadu became less marked.Conditions are favourable for the advance of the southwest monsoon into some parts of the Andaman Sea, south Bay of Bengal, and Andaman and Nicobar Islands by Tuesday. It is also favourable for further advancement over some parts of the south Arabian Sea, Maldives, and Comorin area in the next four to five days.Meanwhile, maximum temperatures were above normal in Kottayam, Palakkad, Kollam, Thiruvananthapuram, and Thrissur districts. Palakkad recorded the highest maximum temperature of 37.5 degrees Celsius.Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (Incois) issued a swell surge alert for the coastal regions of Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Kannur, Kasaragod, Kollam, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Thiruvananthapuram, and Thrissur. Swell waves in the range of 15-16 seconds period with 0.4-0.5m height are forecast until 11.30pm on Tuesday. It advised that there is a possibility of surging waves, and boats should ply with utmost vigilance, and recreation should be undertaken with due care.

The weather scientists explained that there was also an active western disturbance, which would increase the possibility of prolonged thunder activity in the region, including parts of Delhi. The winds also turned easterly from the earlier warm westerly in the entire north Rajasthan, including Jaipur, Delhi and in Punjab, including Amritsar and Ludhiana, which facilitated moisture influx from the Bay of Bengal to northwest India. On Friday, the city's base weather station at Safdarjung logged a maximum temperature of 41.2 degrees Celsius, a notch above normal and a drop from the 43.9 degrees Celsius recorded a day earlier, which was the warmest this season. The maximum temperature at the weather station at Mungeshpur was at 39.1 degrees Celsius. Elsewhere, Ayanagar and Palam both recorded a high of 40.6 degrees Celsius, Lodhi Road was at 39.1 and Ridge, at 39.3 degrees Celsius. "Tomorrow's maximum temperatures are likely to be in the range of 39-41 degrees Celsius, which will be near normal for the period," stated a forecast by IMD. The Met office hasn't issued a colour-coded warning for Saturday but forecast the maximum temperature to be between 39 degrees and 41 degrees. Thunderstorms, rain and strong winds up to 60 kmph are also likely. By June 16, the maximum temperature may be hovering at 36-38 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, the city's air quality remained 'moderate' on Friday. The air quality index read 187 against Thursday's 195, both in the 'moderate' category.

One killed in house collapse amid heavy rain in Karnataka
One person died and another went missing in separate rain-related incidents across the state, which suffered unrelenting rains over the past week. The state also reported several incidents of flooding, house collapse, and road blockages. Authorities in Belagavi, Dharwad and Malnad districts have issued alerts and declared holidays for all educational insitutions. A 65-year-old woman, identified as Pakirawwa Haveri, died after her mud house collapsed while she was asleep early on Friday, police said. 'She was stuck in the debris of mud and stones. She was found dead by the time the neighbours were able to retrieve her body,' police Bhimashankar Guled. The Gokak rural police said that the structure, weakened by incessant rains, gave way around dawn. Haveri was declared brought dead at the Gokak government hospital. Meanwhile, a 58-year-old man, identified as Hussainsab Kalasa, went missing after his two-wheeler was swept away in an overflowing drain at Hubbali city on Thursday night, police said . 'While the passersby were able to rescue the pillion rider, Kalasa remained untraceable at the time of reporting,' said Bhimashankar Guled. In Yaragatti taluk, 42-year-old Pakirappa Bhimappa Banyagol from Gokak town was swept away along with his bike while crossing a canal at Chikkabadanur during a flash flood late on Thursday night. He was found stuck in debris on Friday nearly two kilometres from the spot he fell, said police. 'Police and people who were searching for him found him stuck on Friday morning. They retrieved him, took him out and shifted to the primary health center at Yaragatti where he was reportedly recovering,' said Muragod police inspector IM Matapati. Meanwhile, in Karwar in Uttara Kannada district, hundreds of homes submerged and several low lying areas were inundated, officials said on Friday. The city was also struck by a landslide that occurred near Sai Mandir on Dobighat Road early on Thursday morning, officials said. With heavy rainfall continuing across coastal, north-interior, and south-interior Karnataka, the IMD issued a red alert for June 13 across multiple districts including Udupi, Uttara Kannada, Belagavi, Dharwad, Gadag, Kodagu, and Shivamogga. District administrations responded by declaring holidays for Anganwadis and schools in several areas, including Udupi, where deputy commissioner K Vidyakumari confirmed the precautionary closure. The Regional Meteorological Centre, Delhi, lifted orange alert for heatwave and forecasted, "Partly cloudy sky, very light rain/thunderstorm/lightening accompanied with gusty winds (speed 30-40 kmph) temporarily reaching 50 kmph during thunderstorm. On Friday, the city witnessed a slight drop in temperatures amid hot and humid conditions.
