Mohammed Al Gergawi honoured by leading French business school
Mohammed Al Gergawi, Minister of Cabinet Affairs, has been honoured for his efforts to raise government standards and champion innovation by a leading business school in France.
Mr Al Gergawi received an honorary professorship in leadership, public policy and government from Skema Business School, in recognition of his achievements in the government sector, including advancing public-sector excellence at home and abroad. The ceremony was attended by Professor Alice Guilhon, executive president and dean of Skema, and Frederique Vidal, France's former minister of higher education, research and innovation, and a member of the board of trustees at the highly regarded institution.
Skema Business School specialises in business education and research and operates in seven countries, including the UAE, United States, China and Brazil. "This distinction reflects Skema's commitment to honouring visionary leaders who have made a lasting impact on public policy, governance, and institutional innovation," read a statement issued by the Executive Office of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai.
It is the latest international accolade for the leading minister. In May 2024, he was awarded an honorary doctorate by Georgetown University at a graduation ceremony in Washington. Mr Al Gergawi received a Doctor of Humane Letters, Honoris Causa for his significant contributions to the public and private sectors and wider society, the state news agency Wam reported at the time.
He also gave the keynote address at the graduation ceremony for 900 students at the university's McDonough School of Business. Mr Al Gergawi also serves as chairman of the World Governments Summit Organisation. He gave the opening address at the latest global gathering earlier this month, in which he called on governments to keep pace with innovation and asked the richest nations to contribute more to eliminate poverty.
'The past 25 years have been nothing short of extraordinary,' said Mr Al Gergawi. 'Marked by certain transformations and unprecedented shifts, the world in 2000 was optimistic, with globalisation seen as an unstoppable force for economic good and technological innovation. But the opposite has happened and we have given way to fragmentation, protectionism and populism.'

Saudi Arabia joins the race to be the next Silicon Valley of the Middle East
Saudi Arabia could emerge as the Middle East's Silicon Valley, with moves to partner directly with global leaders in new-age tech to form the bedrock for powering local innovation, sector experts said. Institutional alignment, sovereign capital and regulatory clarity make the country an execution-first environment for AI and Web3 startups. Saudi Arabia is also making smart moves to build its own AI infrastructure through sovereign initiatives like Humane aimed to ensure data sovereignty, strategic control and scalable impact, besides aligning with national values and priorities, that can act as a template for emerging economies to model their digital futures instead of outsourcing them, experts said. 'Saudi Arabia is building infrastructure, not just regulation. While Europe debates constraints, Saudi partners directly with global innovators to build at scale,' Johanna Cabildo, CEO of D-GN (Data Guardians Network), told Arabian Business. 'When a government like Saudi Arabia doesn't just endorse, but funds and deploys AI across ministries, oil giants and smart cities, it creates demand signals that attract private innovators,' he said. Cabildo cited moves like Saudi Aramco's engagement with US-based droppGroup for developing foundational AI and blockchain systems as smart measures to power local innovation. Industry players said the Saudi government's $40 billion AI investment is bound to reshape the country – as well as the wider region – into a competitive innovation hub, triggering a large-scale influx of global talents into the country. Senior executives at other tech firms said Saudi Arabia – as well as countries like the UAE in the region – is stepping out from being a consumer of innovation to becoming a global producer. AI powers industry shift Industry players said collaborations such as Saudi Aramco's mega AI and blockchain deal with droppGroup are expected to have a significant impact on traditional sectors such as energy, logistics and education in the country. AI can revolutionise operations in the energy sector, with predictive maintenance, powered by machine learning, that could save billions by preventing outages in Aramco's oil fields. In logistics, AI-driven systems will streamline supply chains, cutting delays at ports like Jeddah and optimising NEOM's global trade hub, while in education, AI will personalise learning with platforms like the National e-learning initiative, equipping students for a digital economy, they said. UAE gets Swiss robots and drones
Drone and robotics are evolving industry worldwide as well as in the Middle East where the UAE has taken a leadership role in gradually deploying them in government departments and public facilities – in addition to bringing in driver less vehicles and flying taxis – to transform its urban infrastructure into smart cities where drones, machines, robotics and AI will play a crucial role. The UAE's General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), that regulates the drone industry, has registered nearly 24,000 industrial- and commercial-grade drones as well as more than 100 business licenses dealing with the use of drones including renting and offering drone display services. The global market for connected commercial drones is forecast to grow from US$18.6 billion in 2024 at a CAGR of 15 percent to reach US$21.4 billion (Dh78 billion) in 2025 and US$37.3 billion in 2029, according to a research report. The emirate wants to turn robotics into a Dh35 billion (US$9.5 billion) industry. As part of the Dubai Robotics and Automation (R&A) Program, 200,000 robots will be provided over the next 10 years until 2032, to increase efficiency and productivity in various sectors including services, logistics, and the industrial sector, and enhance the competitiveness of Dubai's economy. Reflecting on the drastic changes in the last 25 years since the year 2000, Al Gergawi said, 'The world's population has grown to 8.2 billion today, and the global economy has expanded from $34 trillion to $115 trillion by 2024. International trade surged from $7 trillion to $33 trillion over the same period.' He highlighted the rapid growth of digital connectivity, with internet usage soaring from less than 7 percent of the global population in 2000 to over 60 percent today. 'In 2050, over 20 billion robots will assist humans, and the space economy is expected to reach US$4 trillion,' he said. Private sector businesses have started to bring in some of the best technologies in drones, robotics, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, etc, that will help the UAE to realise its Fourth Industrial Revolution Strategy that aims to strengthen the UAE's position as a global hub for the Fourth Industrial Revolution and to increase its contribution to the national economy by advancing innovation and future technologies.
