Mumbai police shut down 'locker service' of auto driver who went viral for earning ‘ ₹5–8 lakh': ‘Licence only to...'

Minta day ago

An auto driver from Mumbai recently made headlines after a LinkedIn user heaped praises on his "brilliant business" model -- where the social media user claimed that he earns ' ₹ 5 to ₹ 8 lakh' a month not by driving the auto, but by just standing outside the US consulate in Mumbai's Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) and safeguarding the belongings of the visitors. The driver has now landed in hot waters as Mumbai Police have summoned him along with 12 others involved.
Last week, VenueMonk co-founder Rahul Rupani had shared the auto driver's story on LinkedIn, which went viral on social media, leaving several users in "disbelief." The man in the post claimed that he was not allowed to carry his bag inside the US consulate during his visa appointment and was unsure of where to keep his belongings. That's when a nearby auto driver extended a helping hand — but with a 'fee of ₹ 1,000'.
'Sir, bag de do. Safe rakhunga, mera roz ka hai,' the driver reportedly said.
In his viral post, he claimed the driver was making ₹ 5–8 lakh a month through this side hustle. The post drew attention, even earning praise from billionaire Harsh Goenka, who called it 'pure Indian jugaad.' However, the driver's claimed earnings have now been debunked.
As the post went viral, Mumbai Police summoned the auto driver along with 12 others who were offering similar locker services to US consulate visitors. A senior officer from the BKC police station told Hindustan Times that 'parking is strictly prohibited' in the area due to heightened security, and auto drivers are only allowed to 'drop passengers off and leave.'
The police also noted that the drivers had no legal permission to run locker services or store items in nearby shops. Authorities flagged that 'any misplaced items could lead to serious security risks.'
'The auto driver has a licence to transport passengers, not to run a locker service. Therefore, we inquired into the matter and he has now stopped providing lockers,' police told Free Press Journal.

Nolta's murder: One arrested, mastermind still at large

1 2 Panchkula: In a chilling twist to a crime that has shaken the quiet town of Pinjore, police have arrested one of the key suspects in the brutal murder of national kabaddi player Sonu Nolta, even as the alleged mastermind, Piyush Piplani, remains on the run. The arrest came a week after Nolta was gunned down outside Amravati Mall on June 5, a night that turned deadly when four men allegedly ambushed him in a calculated act of violence. The motive? A sinister bid to assert dominance in the area, police claimed. The breakthrough came Wednesday evening when police nabbed Sameer Khan, a resident of Saini Mohalla, who had been living under the radar. His arrest followed the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) on June 10, led by ACP (crime) Arvind Kamboj. Investigators believe Sameer was drawn into a deadly alliance with Piplani and another local, Ankush Solanki. Together, they allegedly plotted Nolta's murder, conducting a recce in a car before executing their plan. On the fateful night, as Nolta arrived at the mall to watch a movie, the assailants struck. Gunfire erupted, leaving Nolta fatally wounded and his cousin, Nitin alias Prince Rana, injured. In a brazen move, the suspects uploaded a video of the attack on social media — an act that would become their undoing. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Indian Stewardess Makes Headlines Worldwide medalmerit Learn More Undo Police traced the video's IP address within hours. Ironically, during their escape, Piplani reportedly shot himself in the hand by accident. The group abandoned their vehicle at PGI Chandigarh the next day, where police later recovered a spent cartridge — vital forensic evidence. With Piplani still at large, police have launched an aggressive manhunt. Eight special teams are scouring hideouts across Himachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, and Mohali. Investigators are leaving no stone unturned — tracking digital footprints, analyzing call records, and interrogating friends and family. DCP (crime) Amit Dahiya confirmed that past criminal records of the suspects are under scrutiny, and forensic experts are working to build an airtight case. On Thursday, Sameer was remanded to five days in police custody. During the court hearing, Nitin Rana, still recovering from his injuries, identified Sameer as one of the shooters. Air India plane crash: At $120 million+, insurance claim to be costliest for Indian aviation

Live Events (You can now subscribe to our (You can now subscribe to our Economic Times WhatsApp channel The catastrophic crash of an Air India flight in Ahmedabad on Thursday is likely to trigger the costliest aviation insurance claim involving an Indian airline, with claims estimated to exceed $120 million, people familiar with the matter the estimated payout, the hull loss—the insured value of the aircraft— alone could be around $80 million, while passenger liability compensation could add between $30-50 total liability payout could be significantly higher, with one estimate pegging potential passenger-related claims at over $100 million, given the presence of several high-networth individuals AIG was the lead insurer and others including New India Assurance had written part of the policy. The aircraft was covered under a global reinsurance programme, placed in the London market, whereby most of the risk is ceded to international insurers like Tata AIG, New India Assurance, National Insurance, United India, Oriental and ICICI Lombard General have retained less than 10% of the risk, market participants said. State-owned reinsurer GIC Re has 5% on the reinsurance treaty and will see a claim of about $4.1 million, they said.'Today's incident… is expected to trigger claims under both the hull and liability sections due to the total loss of the aircraft and the fatalities. Such losses generally affect multiple reinsurers, as airline fleet policies are often placed on a facultative basis involving several participants. Since liability claims take time to quantify, it is currently difficult to assess the impact on future pricing," said Ramaswamy Narayanan, CMD of GIC Re.'This would be one of the biggestever claims involving an Indian airline,' said Sourav Biswas, aviation business head at Alliance Insurance Indian carriers have witnessed few major accidents. In 2010, a Boeing 737 operating from Dubai crashed on landing at Mangalore, killing 158. Another crash at Kozhikode in 2020 claimed 21 these two incidents led to insurance payouts of about $60–70 million, including hull and liability, insurance industry insiders said. A Tata AIG spokesperson said as the lead insurer for Air India, the company is closely monitoring the situation. Air India's liability limit is up to $1.5 billion, an inurance executive aware of the subject said. There could be around $250,000 per passenger potential liability for bodily injury or bodily injury leading to death, added the person who did not want to be named. The crash is likely to harden reinsurance rates across the board. Aviation insurance is a global pool, and any large loss in one part of the world impacts pricing everywhere.'This will affect renewals next year,' a senior reinsurance executive said.'Aviation rates may go up globally, and more so in markets like India where loss ratios have otherwise been benign.' Tata Group-owned Air India's aviation insurance policy is typically renewed on April 1 each year, with a panel of insurers led by global brokers in New India Assurance had traditionally led the placement for the national carrier, Tata AIG is understood to have taken over that role since the airline's privatisation. New India and other Indian insurers now hold supporting roles, industry executives said.
