Uber rolling out feature to pair female riders with female drivers

Uber is launching a new feature aimed at making women feel safer while using the ride-sharing service, the company shared this week.
The initiative called the Women's Preferences program, which pairs female riders with female drivers, is set to pilot over the next few weeks in Detroit, Los Angeles and San Francisco, Uber announced in a release Wednesday, July 23.
'Women riders and drivers have told us they want the option to be matched with other women on trips," VP of Operations for US and Canada Camiel Irving said in the news release. "We've heard them − and now we're introducing new ways to give them even more control over how they ride and drive.'
Here's what to know about the new feature − and how customers can use it.
Once the new preferences roll out, riders will see an option for female drivers. However, the company notes that if the wait time for a the preferred driver is longer than expected, riders will still be able to change their selection for a different ride.
Female riders will be able to reserve a female driver in advance by pre-booking a trip, Uber says. They can also adjust their settings to default to "women drivers" for future rides. The company warns it's not guaranteed women will be paired with each other, but making the change in settings increases the odds of a match.
For female Uber drivers, the change presents an opportunity to solely work with female riders, specifically during peak evening hours, Uber says. Drivers will be able to toggle on the 'Women Rider Preference' in their Uber app settings. To receive requests from all riders, drivers can turn the preference off at any time.
According to Uber, the feature is launching in the next few weeks, first in Detroit, Los Angeles and San Francisco. Uber doesn't have specific plans to expand just yet, the company told USA TODAY, but noted possible plans to bring the feature to new cities following the pilot programs.
The company has already implemented similar features in other parts of the world. In 2019, Uber launched Women Rider Preference in Saudi Arabia, a year after the country granted women the right to drive following an approximate 60-year ban.
Riders in the country had a positive response, the company said. That same feature is now in use in 40 countries and has led to over 100 million Uber rides.
'Making this work reliably − not just symbolically − required thoughtful design. Most drivers are men, so we've worked to ensure this feature was truly usable in different places around the world,' said Irving, noting Uber has tested and refined the product in markets including Germany and France.
'As a result, in a first for the industry, we're able to launch more reliable features that offer women riders multiple ways to be matched with a woman driver."
On Thursday, July 24, Uber's competitor Lyft, announced a different, but similar concept that will allow riders to "favorite" a driver so they can match with them in the future. That feature will begin rolling out in select cities in the coming weeks and will launch in the U.S. and Canada by the end of August, the company said in a release.

UBER Expands Mastercard Deal: Is the Growth Story Strengthening?

In a customer-friendly move, Uber Technologies UBER expanded its deal with Mastercard MA. The extended global deal aims to streamline payment processes for drivers, couriers and consumers while enhancing benefits for cardholders. The expanded partnership with Mastercard offers Uber significant benefits, strengthening operational efficiency and enhancing its appeal to both drivers and customers. As part of the renewed collaboration, Uber will integrate multiple Mastercard products and services. These include Mastercard Move for real-time payouts, Mastercard One Credential to simplify payment experiences and Mastercard Gateway to streamline collections and support secure business operations. The Uber Pro Card, already available in the United States and Canada, has been renewed in these markets and will expand to new regions such as the United Kingdom. This card allows drivers and couriers to receive instant, no-cost payments after each trip or delivery, along with benefits like cash-back rewards on fuel purchases. These benefits associated with the expanded deal with Mastercard provide enhanced value for Uber's global user base, all while supporting the ride-hailing giant's growth. We believe that the collaboration represents another step to further Uber's growth by improving payment experiences, expanding geographic reach and reinforcing loyalty among its driver and rider base. Expressing delight at the deepening of the collaboration, Karl Hebert, Uber's vice president of global commerce stated: 'At the heart of this partnership is a desire to grow benefits for all our mutual customers, be it the businesses that rely on Uber to earn each day, or those using the platform to Go Anywhere and Get Anything.' Taking a Look at LYFT's Association With MA Uber's rival in the ride-hailing market, Lyft LYFT, too, has an association with Mastercard. The tie-up aims at providing benefits to both Lyft drivers and riders. The benefits include the Lyft Direct debit card for drivers. This facilitates instant payouts and other benefits, as well as rewards and promotions for riders using Mastercard when paying for Lyft rides. The Lyft-Mastercard association extends to Bay Wheels. This move allows users to earn and save with their Mastercard when paying for Lyft rides, including Bay Wheels, a public bike-sharing system in the Bay Area with a large number of bikes and stations. The Bay Wheels system is operated and managed by Lyft. It is accessible through the Lyft app. Uber's Price Performance, Valuation and Estimates Shares of UBER have gained 50.2% so far this year compared with the Zacks Internet-Services industry's 3.8% rise in the same timeframe. Waymo and Avis plan Dallas robotaxi launch

Alphabet Inc.'s Waymo plans to launch robotaxi service in Dallas next year in partnership with Avis Budget Group Inc., a push by the autonomous car company to diversify beyond its relationship with Uber Technologies Inc. to further expand across the US. In a first, Waymo said Avis will serve as the fleet partner for its robotaxis in Dallas. Customers can order rides on Waymo's app while Avis will provide car management services, including infrastructure, vehicle readiness, maintenance and general depot operations, the companies said Tuesday in a statement. The Dallas deal marks a multiyear partnership that Waymo and Avis plan to expand to more cities over time, according to the statement. Avis' foray into robotaxi fleet management sets it up as a competitor to Uber and Lyft Inc., which are positioning themselves to provide similar services for driverless cars in addition to their customer-centric rideshare program. 'Our partnership with Waymo marks a pivotal milestone in our evolution, from a rental car company to a leading provider of fleet management, infrastructure and operations to the broader mobility ecosystem,' Brian Choi, Avis chief executive officer, said in the statement. The announcement also underscores that Waymo and Uber are partners and rivals as robotaxi programs are introduced across the US. In the five cities where Waymo vehicles are currently available, it offers rides via its app in Phoenix, San Francisco and Los Angeles, while partnering with Uber in Phoenix, Austin and Atlanta. In the latter two markets, where Waymo rides are only available on the Uber app, Waymo is utilizing fleet services with Uber-backed partner Avomo. For its planned Miami launch next year, Waymo is providing the service through its app, but using operations from Uber-backed fleet management company Moove. Dallas will be a competitive robotaxi market with Uber and Lyft also planning to offer rides with their respective driverless technology partners. Uber is working with Austin-based Avride for a launch later this year, while Lyft plans to offer them with Intel Corp. spinoff Mobileye Global Inc. as soon as next year. Alphabet has been aggressively expanding Waymo's operations, which may also face increased competition from Tesla Inc. Earlier this month, Waymo more than doubled its service area in Austin, Tesla's home base. It also recently began testing in New York City and announced it will be doing the same in Philadelphia.
