Traditional nurse, previously convicted for GBH, is jailed again for assaulting and threatening a young initiate under his supervision.
A traditional nurse, previously convicted for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH), has been jailed again for assaulting and threatening a young initiate under his supervision.
The Tsomo Magistrate's Court sentenced Siyasanga Sifumba, 30, to two years in prison for GBH following his brutal assault on an 18-year-old initiate under his care during the 2024 summer initiation season.
The court also declared Sifumba, who has a previous conviction for assault GBH, unfit to possess a firearm.
Traditional nurse previously convicted on assault GBH
Police arrested the traditional nurse on 17 December 2024 after the initiate was hospitalised.
Three different assaults took place, during which the victim was kicked with boots, threatened with a knife, and struck in the knees with a wooden stick.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regional spokesperson Luxolo Tyali said the victim's brother, who was a recent graduate of the initiation process, witnessed his brother's brutal beatings.
'Sifumba also issued death threats to both brothers and their parents. As a result of the abuse, the initiate was unable to complete his initiation,' Tyali said.
After Sifumba's arrest, the prosecution successfully opposed bail by pointing out his familial relationship with the victim and the victim's brother.
Accused said victim claimed older women were 'bewitching' him
During the trial, prosecutor Elihle Mbutho presented strong evidence from the initiate, his brother, and the medical doctor who examined the victim.
Sifumba pleaded not guilty and denied any wrongdoing, asserting that the initiate had claimed that elderly women were 'bewitching' him to commit assaults at night.

'The court rejected this defence as highly improbable, concurring with the prosecution that the severity of the injuries warranted a custodial sentence,' Tyali said.
DPP praises victim, brother's courage
Advocate Barry Madolo, the Eastern Cape Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), welcomed the ruling and praised the victim and his brother's courage for speaking out against abuse and assisting the court.
'Their courageous actions should serve as an example to other initiates who are rescued from abusive initiation schools. We urge them not to hide behind the secrecy of this sacred rite of passage to manhood, but rather to speak out so that justice may prevail,' said Madolo.

Ten SAPS, EMPD officers held for theft released on bail of R1,500 each

Ten police officers who appeared before the Germiston magistrate's court on Tuesday and Wednesday on charges of theft were each granted bail of R1,500 after an unopposed bail application. They are Fortune Dhlamini, Nomfuneko Felicia Sambane, Mangalore Moloko, Nhlanhla Tumelo Matsane, Thabo Mokgaboki, Matthews Mashala, Mesho Hector Mabasa, Dlalisa Eugene Zamokuhle, Kgagare Tseego and Sidebi Tendani. 'The case stems from a complaint laid by a shop owner in Edenvale, who alleges that during a raid on his business premises on June 4, the officers seized R35,000 in cash, cigarettes worth R150,000 and boxes of Panado tablets,' National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane said. She said the officers, six from Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) and four from the SA Police Service, were part of a joint law enforcement operation aimed at monitoring compliance at shops in the area. 'According to the complainant, he was not present during the raid but was later informed by his cashier that the police had confiscated the items. The seized goods were allegedly placed in several refuse bags to be submitted as exhibits.' However, the complainant claims that upon his arrival at the police station, only one refuse bag had been registered. The cash was neither returned nor recorded in the SAP13 register, the official register used for documenting exhibits seized during criminal investigations. The matter was postponed until September 8 for further investigation.

Police close probe into missing R465k Sedibeng mayoral chain

Gauteng police have confirmed that their investigation into the missing Sedibeng mayoral chain, valued at R465,000, has been closed. The ceremonial chain went missing after the state of the district address on June 23 2023. The mayor, Lerato Maloka, had allegedly put it on the shelf in her office after she finished the address and it was never seen again. A case of theft was opened in November that year, but the chain is yet to be found. Police spokesperson Col Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi confirmed that no arrests had been made. 'Investigations were conducted and the docket brought before the deputy public prosecutor, who declined to prosecute, hence the matter was closed on July 25,' she said. Asked why the matter was taken to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) though there was no suspect, Nevhuhulwi said: 'Some of the cases are first investigated then brought to Senior Public Prosecutor of the Director of Public Prosecutions, whether someone is arrested or not. And this is one of those cases.' The disappearance of a ceremonial asset valued at nearly half a million rand, coupled with the lack of transparency and accountability, undermines public trust in the municipality's leadership. DA MPL Kingsol Chabalala She then referred Sowetan to the NPA for reasons not to prosecute. The NPA is yet to respond. When asked for a comment, Maloka said: 'I am unable to comment about a process which was never in my control to give you acceptable outcomes. 'The municipality has a comprehensive security system in place in and around the office, which to date no-one knows or no report is available on how it was breached, so that improvements sought are informed accordingly.' DA MPL Kingsol Chabalala described the closure of the case as disturbing. 'This is a serious matter that leaves suspicions, as the case has be suddenly closed without any arrests or recovery of the mayoral chain,' he said. Chabalala has since written to Gauteng premier Panyaza Lesufi, calling for urgent intervention in what he describes as an 'unresolved matter'. In the letter, he raised concerns about transparency, accountability and the handling of public assets within the Sedibeng district municipality. 'The disappearance of a ceremonial asset valued at nearly half a million rand, coupled with the lack of transparency and accountability, undermines public trust in the municipality's leadership. 'Your intervention is critical to restoring confidence and ensuring that those responsible for any negligence or misconduct are held accountable. I trust that your office will treat this matter with the urgency and seriousness it demands. Please keep me informed of any actions taken or progress made in addressing this issue,' reads part of the letter.
