Father's Day surprise: Torey Lovullo's son gets ejected from game and copies dad
The younger Lovullo, manager of the High-A South Bend Cubs, called him to tell his dad what he did in Sunday's game against Fort Wayne in the Midwest League.
'He got thrown out of the game,' the Arizona manager told reporters. 'He's like: 'Hey dad, wanted to say Happy Father's Day. I did this one for you. I copied you and threw every umpire out of the game today.''
Torey Lovullo made headlines last month when he was ejected from a game against San Francisco for arguing an obstruction call and proceeded to point to each of the four crew members and toss them out.
After the game — and his theatrics — he acknowledged that they actually made the right call.
'They're really good,' Lovullo said then. 'Umpires are good. I stand corrected.'
Nick Lovullo was tossed in the second inning of South Bend's 5-4 loss Sunday. And although he told his dad he threw all the umpires out, he actually just pantomimed tossing out the one who ejected him.

Five teams and 30 riders excluded from women's Tour de Romandie in a dispute over GPS trackers
VILLARS-SUR-OLLON, Switzerland (AP) — Five teams and 30 of the world's top cyclists have been removed from the women's Tour de Romandie in a dispute over GPS trackers on riders, the sport's governing body said as the race began Friday. The excluded riders made up nearly a third of the field for the three-day race in Switzerland and included 2024 Tour de France winner Katarzyna Niewiadoma. The International Cycling Union said the teams had been asked to each pick one rider to wear a GPS tracker ahead of a wider rollout of the device to all riders at the world championships in Rwanda next month. They refused to nominate riders and were excluded from the race, the UCI said. All 30 riders were listed as non-starters on the race website. 'It is deplorable to witness the refusal of certain teams to move forward together to protect the safety of riders, and the UCI condemns their non-cooperation,' the UCI said. It also claimed that some of the teams were part of an organization developing a rival tracking system. The exclusions may not be the end of the matter. The UCI said it 'shall consider if other measures are warranted' under its regulations. In a joint statement, the five teams said they supported measures to make cycling safer but disagreed with how the UCI went about it. Forcing teams to pick one rider to wear the UCI-mandated device meant they had to 'discriminate one rider against other riders,' they said. 'This action disregards the rights of teams and riders, applies the measure in a discriminatory manner, and contradicts the UCI's own stated commitment to dialogue with stakeholders,' the teams said. 'We are always at the forefront to make cycling a safer sport, but it should be achieved through collaboration, not coercion.' The UCI says it wants to introduce the trackers to ensure a quick response to crashes. At last year's world championships in Switzerland, 18-year-old cyclist Muriel Furrer died after sustaining a head injury in a crash. She was competing in the junior women's event on rain-slicked roads when she crashed in a forest area south of Zurich. She reportedly lay alone for almost an hour and a half before she was discovered at the side of the road and airlifted by helicopter to the hospital.

(Arizona Sports) Eduardo Rodriguez goes longest distance as a D-back, Arizona takes care of Colorado Southpaw Eduardo Rodriguez threw his longest outing as an Arizona Diamondback as his club handled the Colorado Rockies 8-2 on Thursday night in Denver. Rodriguez only walked one batter and kept six hits at bay with six strikeouts (five via swing-and-miss) in seven innings. His longest start in 30 previous was 6.2 innings on April 23 against the Tampa Bay Rays. He managed to get through seven frames on 93 pitches (64 strikes). ( D-backs stay hot in roll reminiscent of World Series run The D-backs found themselves in much the same predicament on Thursday, 5 1/2 games out of the final NL Wild Card spot as they prepared to open another series in Colorado. But the difference this time was that they were hot, winning eight of 12 games since the Trade Deadline, when they dealt sluggers Eugenio Suárez and Josh Naylor, as well as starter Merrill Kelly. Arizona's roll continued with an 8-2 victory over the Rockies, begging the question: Could the D-backs be in the midst of another improbable hot streak that vaults them back into contention? [Ed. Note] Consider this the official counterpoint to Jim's Debbie Downer (and very realistic) GDT intro yesterday 🙂 ( Diamondbacks Reportedly Frustrated with Ketel MarteAccording to Piecoro, both Marte's teammates and 'others' in the organization have been unsatisfied with Marte of late — particularly his notable requests to take days off at times. 'In recent years, some Diamondbacks players have taken to adding a phrase to comments they make when asked about Marte. He is a great player, they say, when he wants to be. They are giving credit while also airing a grievance,' Piecoro wrote. [Ed. Note] Felt important to add this, as this was a debate that I and a couple of other's on here were having. Does appear that there might be some credence to the concerns regarding Marte's status in the clubhouse. ( Diamondbacks' Top Prospect Activated from Injured ListLawlar, 23, has been on and off the IL frequently in the past pair of seasons. It was expected with his most recent injury that it would take over a month, stretching into just over six weeks. Lawlar has been rehabbing at Salt River Fields for some time, and he'll now head back to Reno to get back into full rhythm. 'I think that's probably the best thing for him, get some at-bats and start playing baseball the way that we know that he can,' Manager Torey Lovullo said on August 8. ( Caissie makes surreal MLB debut just miles from hometown 'It was surreal,' Caissie said. 'Growing up watching the Blue Jays, I'm just super thankful the Cubs could make my debut happen in front of the Canadian people I cherish so much.' The promotion shouldn't have come as a surprise, given what Caissie has accomplished this season for Triple-A Iowa and across his four Minor League campaigns prior. (Bleed Cubbie Blue) MLB announces 2025 Arizona Fall League schedule The 2025 AFL season will begin under the lights at Scottsdale Stadium on Monday, Oct. 6, when the Peoria Javelinas visit the Scottsdale Scorpions at 6:30 p.m. On Tuesday, Oct. 7, the Glendale Desert Dogs will visit the Salt River Rafters and the Surprise Saguaros will visit the Mesa Solar Sox to open their respective campaigns. The AFL will return to Tucson for a tripleheader on Saturday, Oct. 11, with all six teams playing at Kino Sports Complex. The following week, on Saturday, Oct. 18, the league will return to the West Valley area for a tripleheader at Goodyear Ballpark. ( These 2025 Deadline sellers could become buyers in 2026 Their success makes it easy to forget that just over a year ago, the Blue Jays were major sellers at the 2024 Deadline. They dealt away starter Yusei Kikuchi, infielder Justin Turner, reliever Yimi García and several other key players, finishing last in the AL East with a 74-88 record. Which clubs who traded away important pieces at this year's Trade Deadline could follow Toronto's path? Here are five 2025 Deadline sellers who could become 2026 Deadline buyers.

Pole vault superstar Duplantis teases 100-meter champion Lyles about post-race push by Bednarek
CHORZOW, Poland (AP) — Maybe only a track and field superstar like Mondo Duplantis could get away with such a mischievous question to Olympic 100-meter champion Noah Lyles. The pole vault world record holder wanted to know more Friday about the shove Lyles got from Kenny Bednarek after winning the 200 at United States national championships two weeks ago. 'Can I ask a question?' Duplantis said at the end of a multi-athlete news conference in Poland — alongside Lyles but not Bednarek — on the eve of the sprinters renewing their rivalry in the 100 on the Diamond League circuit. 'I want to ask Noah about, like, that stare down and that push,' Duplantis said, smiling and looking right along the line to Lyles, 'because that (expletive) was kinda crazy game.' Lyles repeated the answer he gave Aug. 4 in Eugene, Oregon, after the post-race beef with long-time teammate Bednarek seemed to fuel a must-see track rivalry ahead of the world championships next month in Tokyo. 'As coach said: 'No comment,'' Lyles replied, to laughter in the room. Duplantis came back for more: 'Fair enough, fair enough. I enjoyed it, though, I enjoyed it.' Lyles was invited to ask his own question of Duplantis. He suggested not setting another world record Saturday so that he might win the ring awarded by meet organizers for the best performance. 'No comment, no comment,' the U.S.-born Swedish star quipped back, to more laughter. Duplantis set his 13th world record Tuesday in Hungary, raising the bar to 6.29 meters. One year ago he cleared 6.26 in Poland to add a single centimeter to the record-setting mark that won Olympic gold in Paris last August. On the track, the men's 100 shapes as the main event Saturday, though Bednarek has since said he made up with Lyles in a long conversation. It will be the first 100 between Lyles and Kishane Thompson since Paris, when the American took gold by five-thousands from the Jamaica as both were timed at 9.79 seconds. Thompson starts Saturday as the fastest man in the world this year — 9.75 set in Kingston in June. Bednarek is second on the season list at 9.79, clocked winning the U.S. national title that was skipped by Lyles, who has an automatic entry for Tokyo as the defending champion from 2023. 'You basically have the Olympic final maybe missing two people, adding in some just as fast people,' said Lyles, whose season best so far is 10 flat in London last month. 'It's going to be good, regardless.' 'Of course," he said, "having Kishane there makes it even better.'
