Brad Fittler responds after Nicho Hynes' eye-opening admission about Origin career
"If I was to get picked again I guess I would put myself out there more," Hynes told Nine's 100% Footy. "I probably didn't bond as well with some of the team as I could have. It was definitely a good experience. I would never have a rep jersey and say it was a bad experience. If I never played for NSW again at least I can say I wore the Blues jersey proud, and I tried my best. Sometimes your best isn't good enough and so be it."
Hynes emerged as a bit of a scapegoat for many Blues supporters, but it's a little unfair on the former Dally M Medallist considering he was dropped after a loss in the Origin series opener in 2024 that came after an early send-off to Joseph Suaalii. The Blues played the majority of the contest with a man down and Hynes was unable to engineer an against-the-odds victory, before being overlooked for the remaining two games of the series that NSW won to claim the shield.
In the previous series in 2023, Hynes was played out of position when he came off the bench late in Game 1 and was widely criticised for a defensive lapse that allowed the Maroons to score a match-deciding try. Despite those previous struggles, Fittler believes Hynes 'will get another chance' to play Origin footy again if he keeps playing well for the Sharks.
But the former NSW coach agreed with Hynes that it's crucial for any Origin squad members to go out of their way to try and connect with teammates. And Fittler offered some telling advice for any other future Origin stars that might find themselves in the same situation as the Sharks halfback.
Brad Fittler's message to Nicho Hynes after Origin admission
"The one bit of advice I'd give to any player is just get out of your room," he said on Nine's Freddy and The Eighth. "Be with the team, don't be in your room - if you're in your room, you're on your own.
"I can't go back, I'd have no idea how Nicho was in those camps or if he got on with people or if he had some friends going in there, which sometimes helps. You've just got to force yourself to be with other people and learn about them.
"He (Hynes) played in the Origin game where (Joseph) Suaalii got sent off early and they ended up getting beat - he started in that game. We picked him in a game where he came off the bench for the last 10 or 15 minutes (in 2023), but I can't remember the actual camp.
"You can be pretty hard on yourself and if you get to play a rep game and you lose, it's a bad experience because it's intense and you want to win so bad. Just keep playing well and you will get another chance."
Blues legend Andrew Johns admitted it can be 'intimidating' for players to come into Origin camp and make their presence felt in front of more experienced players. And former NSW hooker Api Koroisau said the 10-day Origin camps don't offer players much time to form really meaningful connections with teammates.

"You don't get much time, so your ability to bond quickly and get on the same page is really important," the Tigers co-captain said. "One moment can change everything - it can be a great experience or the best thing ever or it can be really hard on you."

Video: Headliners Carlos Ulberg, Dominick Reyes face off to launch UFC Perth promotion
+ We're still seven weeks out from the UFC's return to Australia, but already the anticipation is starting to build. A former light heavyweight title challenger looking to complete a resurgence headlines UFC Perth against a rising standout from nearby New Zealand, and Thursday the promotion brought the fighters together "Down Under" to get face to face. Dominick Reyes (14-4 MMA, 8-4 UFC) takes on Carlos Ulberg (12-1 MMA, 8-1 UFC) on Sept. 27 at RAC Arena in Perth in Western Australia. The light heavyweight bout will be the main event. Check out the fighters' Thursday faceoff and comments about their first meeting below. Reyes knocked out Nikita Kryvlov in the first round in April for his third straight win, which kept in the rearview mirror a four-fight skid and a series of health issues that threatened to end his fighting career. The rut began with a highly debated decision loss to Jon Jones in a light heavyweight title fight many thought Reyes won in 2020. Ulberg picked up a close decision win against ex-champ Jan Blachowicz in March. Ulberg has one of the best current streaks in the promotion and is undefeated in his most recent eight trips to the octagon. Ulberg trains with former UFC champion Israel Adesanya at City Kickboxing in New Zealand. Double halves injury blow for Broncos ahead of finals
Brisbane have lost both of their halves to the same injury in one play with Adam Reynolds and Ezra Mam limping off AAMI Park in a major blow to their hopes of beating Melbourne and their charge to the NRL finals. Reynolds and Mam tried to chase down Xavier Coates after the Storm winger intercepted the ball 10 metres out from the tryline. While Selwyn Cobbo pulled off a miracle try-saving tackle, taking Coates into touch as he attempted to get the ball down, the play still proved extremely costly for the visitors. SELWYN COBBO TAKE A BOW! 🤯 — NRL (@NRL) August 7, 2025 The halves both suffered hamstring injuries and left the field, 21 minutes into the first half, with Brisbane ahead 2-0. Reynolds, 35, was seen in the change-room taking off his boots while Brisbane confirmed soon after that Mam's match was also over. They will both go for scans to determine the severity of the injuries, with any stint on the sidelines putting a dent in sixth-placed Brisbane's hopes of a top-four berth.

Doedee in for Lions, Dockers veteran Fyfe returns
Tom Doedee will make his long-awaited Brisbane Lions debut in the crucial AFL clash with Sydney as finals hopefuls Fremantle welcome back Nat Fyfe against Port Adelaide. A door opened for unlucky defender Doedee when fellow Lions backman Ryan Lester (concussion) was ruled out of Saturday's Gabba contest with the Swans. The 28-year-old, a high-profile recruit from Adelaide in late 2023, has overcome two knee reconstructions and will play his first AFL game in more than two years. We're excited to announce that Tom will be making his club debut this Saturday! 🎉 — Brisbane Lions (@brisbanelions) August 7, 2025 Will McLachlan returns for Brisbane, who have lost star ball-winner Lachie Neale (quad), while key forward Hayden McLean is back from concussion for Sydney. Fyfe returns from his latest injury setback at Adelaide Oval on Saturday night, having dominated at WAFL level last week. The Dockers are also bolstered by the inclusion of skipper Alex Pearce after losing gun midfielder Hayden Young (adductor). Out of the finals race, Port have regained Jack Lukosius, Willie Rioli and captain Connor Rozee after they were belted by Geelong last week. Gold Coast, chasing their first finals appearance, have recalled Malcolm Rosas in place of the injured Sam Flanders for their important date with Carlton at Marvel Stadium on Saturday. The Blues surprisingly dropped ruckman Marc Pittonet, leaving Tom De Koning to do battle with Suns big man Jarrod Witts. St Kilda named Mattaes Phillipou for their dead-rubber against Richmond at the MCG on Saturday, after the exciting youngster impressed on his return from a plantaris injury in the VFL last week. Darcy Wilson and Liam Henry have also been recalled for the Saints, while the Tigers have been bolstered by the return of experienced trio Tom Lynch, Nathan Broad and Tim Taranto. On Sunday, GWS will line up against North Melbourne at Engie Stadium without spearhead Jesse Hogan, who has been managed after his foot issue flared up. Giants captain Toby Greene returns from a one-match suspension, while the Kangaroos have regained ruckman Tristan Xerri after his three-match ban. Adelaide have managed veteran forward Taylor Walker out of their clash with lowly West Coast at Optus Stadium.
