Guardians salvage doubleheader split with Game 2 rout of Nationals
May 7 - Carlos Santana belted a three-run homer in the sixth inning, helping the visiting Cleveland Guardians salvage a split of a doubleheader with a 9-1 victory over the Washington Nationals on Tuesday.
Daniel Schneemann also went deep and joined Santana in scoring on a wild pitch for the Guardians, who avenged a 10-9 loss in the opener of the doubleheader.
Austin Hedges also went deep and Steven Kwan had an RBI double to fuel Cleveland to its sixth win in its last eight games.
The offense was more than enough for Ben Lively (2-2), who allowed one run on two hits and struck out three in 5 1/3 innings.
Riley Adams homered to lead off the sixth inning for the Nationals, who saw their three-game winning streak come to a halt.
After the teams combined for 19 runs on 24 hits in the first game Tuesday, they totaled just two hits over five scoreless innings before Cleveland broke through in the sixth.
Kwan reached on a one-out infield single and Jose Ramirez worked a two-out walk before Santana sent an 0-2 fastball from Brad Lord (1-4) over the wall in right field. The homer was Santana's fourth of the season and second this month.
Adams responded by depositing a 1-0 fastball from Lively over the wall in right-center field. The homer was Adams' second of the season -- with both of them coming over his last four games.
Lively induced Jacob Young to pop out before being relieved by Tim Herrin, who retired two of the three batters he faced.
Nolan Jones walked to lead off the seventh inning, advanced to second on a pinch-hit single from Schneemann and scored on a fielder's choice from Brayan Rocchio. Schneemann scored on a wild pitch from Jackson Rutledge and Rocchio scooted home on Kwan's double to right field to give Cleveland a 6-1 lead.
Santana scored on a wild pitch from Eduardo Salazar in the eighth inning before Schneemann went deep to right to mark his fifth homer of the season and third in his last four games.
Lord yielded three runs on three hits in six innings.

I'm proud to represent the Americans that look like me
Coco Gauff wants her French Open victory to give hope to ' Americans that look like me'. Gauff beat world number one Aryna Sabalenka in a thrilling three-set final to secure her maiden Roland Garros title. The 21-year-old, now a two-time grand slam champion, says she wants to bring 'hope and light' to black Americans who feel under-represented. 'It means a lot and obviously there's a lot going on in our country right now,' she said. 'But just to be able to be a representation of that and a representation of, I guess, people that look like me in America who maybe don't feel as supported during this time period, and so just being that reflection of hope and light for those people.' Gauff won the WTA Finals in Riyadh in November, days after the re-election of US President Donald Trump. 'I remember after the election and everything, it kind of felt (a) down period a little bit,' she added. 'My mum told me during Riyadh, 'Just try to win the tournament just to give something for people to smile for'. 'So that's what I was thinking about today when holding that (trophy). 'And then seeing the flags in the crowd means a lot. You know, some people may feel some type of way about being patriotic and things like that. 'But I'm definitely patriotic and proud to be American and I'm proud to represent the Americans that look like me and people who kind of support the things that I support.' Gauff is scheduled to play at the Berlin Open, beginning a week on Monday, to kick off her preparations for Wimbledon. But she said: 'I haven't thought that far ahead. Obviously I'm going to take some days off, for sure. 'I'm signed up for Berlin right now. We'll see if I play or not. This part of the season is new just because of the fact that it's so short and I don't know what I'm going to do yet, but I'll have that conversation with my team and take their opinions and see what they think is best. 'For sure I'm going to rest and enjoy it and not go into training too quickly just because I feel like this stuff doesn't happen too often, so you've just got to enjoy it.'

Pochettino says Tottenham links are ‘not realistic' after USMNT loss to Turkey
Mauricio Pochettino pushed back against suggestions he is a candidate to take over the newly-vacant Tottenham Hotspur managerial position, telling reporters on Saturday that it was 'not realistic' for him to leave his current role as US men's national team manager. Pochettino had been considered a possible candidate to replace Ange Postecoglou, who was sacked by Tottenham on 6 June despite him leading the club to Europa League glory – the club's first trophy in 17 years. However, Tottenham finished 17th in the Premier League, their lowest position since 1977. Sign up to Soccer with Jonathan Wilson Jonathan Wilson brings expert analysis on the biggest stories from European soccer after newsletter promotion Pochettino enjoyed a successful run at Spurs from 2014 to 2019, challenging for the Premier League title in 2016 and advancing to the Champions League final in his last season. He was let go because of Tottenham's league performance – the club finished 14th. 'After I left [Tottenham] in 2019, every time [the manager position] is free … my name appeared on the list,' Pochettino said following USA's 2-1 loss to Turkey in a friendly on Saturday afternoon. 'If you have seen the rumors, I think we are 100 coaches on the list of the club. Don't be worried about that. If something happens, we for sure will see. But we cannot talk about this type of thing because I think today it's not real. I think it's not realistic. And look – where I am, where we are? The answer is so clear, no?' Pochettino took over the US national team at the end of 2024 and has overseen a mixed bag of performances in his first nine months. Saturday's friendly was seen mostly as a way to regain the team's footing after a pair of far below-par outings in March's Nations League finals, with the team losing to Panama and Canada and looking generally listless throughout. Even though they lost, the US played with far more verve against Turkey than they had in March. Pochettino has called in a younger and less-experienced squad for this summer's games, with several of the team's first-choice stars out – either by choice, for health reasons, for personal reasons, or due to their club's participation in the Club World Cup. Jack McGlynn, one of those newcomers, opened the scoring on Saturday with a signature curling effort from outside the box. Later that half, two defensive miscues in about three minutes doomed the Americans, with both resulting in goals.
