Police watchdog investigating after man killed during arrest in Deer Lake First Nation
Ontario's police watchdog says it is investigating after a police officer in Deer Lake First Nation shot and killed a 40-year-old man on Tuesday afternoon.
The Special Investigations Unit says officers from the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service had a warrant to arrest the man at a residence in the community about 580 kilometres north of Thunder Bay.
The SIU says its first public release about the shooting incorrectly stated the man fled from the house.
In an update on Friday, it says the man exited the home and approached officers.
The SIU says one of the officers shot the man, and the man was taken to a nursing station where he was pronounced dead.
It says a post-mortem examination was scheduled to be conducted Friday in Toronto, and investigators were sent to the community to investigate.

Police seek public's help in hit-and-run investigation
London police continue to investigate a hit-and-run that occurred in late July. Police say the incident happened around 8:20 a.m. July 29 in the area of Cherryhill Place and Platts Lane. A 911 call indicated a man was laying in the middle of the roadway. When emergency responders arrived, they located him with serious injuries and transported him to hospital. The vehicle involved did not remain at the scene, police say. Investigators are asking anyone who may have been in the area of Cherryhill Place between Cherryhill Boulevard and Platts Lane between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, that may have information, dash-cam footage, or video surveillance that could assist with the investigation to contact the London Police Service. Quebec man charged after break-in, assault on North Bay youths

(File photo/CTV News) A 48-year-old Quebec City man is facing multiple charges after allegedly forcing his way into a private residence and assaulting two youths with a weapon in North Bay, Ont., on Tuesday. The North Bay Police Service responded to reports of a break-in at a residence in the 500-block of Lakeshore Drive shortly before 5:17 p.m. The accused was taken into custody without further incident and has been charged with breaking-and-entering and two counts of assault with a weapon. Youths targeted in unprovoked attack According to police, the accused initially knocked on the door of the victims' secured unit, though the youths did not know him. Shortly afterward, the victims reportedly saw the man behaving aggressively outside. 'Upon noticing the youths, the accused allegedly began to chase after them; they were able to flee safely,' police said in a news release Wednesday. The situation intensified when the man allegedly picked up a statue and used it as a weapon to force entry into the home. Once inside, he pursued the two victims before they managed to escape. Nearby witnesses promptly alerted authorities. Police praise quick response North Bay police's acting deputy chief, Insp. Jeff Warner commended the efforts of officers and bystanders in resolving the situation. 'This was a deeply unsettling incident and I want to commend the quick actions of our officers and the witnesses,' Warner said. 'Quick response was critical in ensuring the safety of the youth involved and in preventing further harm. We recognize how distressing this must have been for those directly impacted, and we thank everyone who played a role in bringing this situation to a safe resolution.' The accused remains in custody awaiting a bail hearing.
