Bungay's Black Shuck Festival closes with premiere of a musical

BBC Newsa day ago
An annual event dedicated to a spine-tingling mythical hound reached a climax at the weekend with the premiere of a community musical. Each year in Bungay, Suffolk, the Black Shuck Festival - named after the hair-raising hound rumoured to stalk the county - celebrates the region's folklore.Sunday's closing night featured a performance of an original work called Fire! Fire!, about The Great Fire of Bungay in 1688.Commissioned by the festival, with funds from Arts Council England, it was rehearsed and performed on a single day and was open to anyone who wanted to sing.
The premiere of Fire! Fire!, written by local composer Will Drew-Batty, took place at St Mary's Church - said to have been one of Black Shuck's haunts.Polly Wright, the festival's artistic director, said: "The Black Shuck Festival looks to bring people together through the shared experience of art. "We are so excited that Will has created this epic new piece which offers a new telling of this important part of the town's history. She said the fact the "impressive large-scale piece" was put together on a single day was "testament to what is possible when people come together and what magic can be created through music".
Drew-Batty described Fire! Fire! as "a story-telling cantata, a dramatic and accessible piece that is scored for a huge choir, instrumentalists, narrator and soloists".The Great Fire of Bungay destroyed most of the town within six hours. A public appeal was launched and donations came in from across the country.
The East Anglian legend of Black Shuck tells of a wild black dog that is said to have entered St Mary's Church during a violent storm on 4 August 1577. The legend tells of the animal then reappearing at Blythburgh church, where it was trapped. Some say Black Shuck's claw marks, burned into the surface of the door, can be seen to this day.

'Forever grateful to Palace for granting grandad's wish'

We know the relationship between a football fan and their club is a special one so, as we gear up for the new season, we asked you to share why you fell in love with Crystal Palace and some of your favourite moments supporting are some of your submissions: Kay: I love Palace because growing up in Croydon, they gave us hope. I remember going to school in the 1990s with red and blue ribbons in my hair because we were in the FA Cup. Now, years later, we have won it!I also love the fact that Palace is a community that is supportive of each other and of others, like when the club raised money for Hartlepool's manager's wife who had cancer. This is what true red and blue means. Send your pictures and stories here

We know the relationship between a football fan and their club is a special one so, as we gear up for the new season, we asked you to share why you fell in love with Manchester City and some of your favourite moments supporting are some of your submissions: Marcel: I was born just 400 yards from Maine Road. I was in Trafford house at Chorlton Grammar School and I made sure to play in goal rather than play in red, which were my house colours! My hero was Bert Trautmann. I worshipped him, collecting his autograph dozens of times, and I used to spend most of my school holidays watching them I live in Torquay and my age, health and finances mean that I have only been to the Etihad once. I have to say that it was nowhere near the magic of the legendary Maine Road. Memories of wonderful days (and nights)! Send your pictures and stories here

'I became an instant lover of attacking football'

We know the relationship between a football fan and their club is a special one so, as we gear up for the new season, we asked you to share why you fell in love with Tottenham and some of your favourite moments supporting is a selection of your submissions: Martin: My cousin lived five houses up the road from me and he owned a football. He said he supported Tottenham Hotspur and because I barely saw a ball at our house, I also said Tottenham.I was five years old and he was two years older so I really looked up to him. The year was 1966 and Tottenham won the cup a year later! After three or four years, he went to secondary school in Ewell, Surrey and supported Chelsea. I haven't wanted Chelsea to win a game since.
