Sad family detail as Jack Silvagni 'all-but certain' for AFL club switch
Details emerged earlier this month that Collingwood had expressed interest in Silvagni, who is an unrestricted free agent if he doesn't re-sign with Carlton. The Magpies are said to be keen on the 27-year-old defender, who could be the perfect replacement for veteran premiership hero Jeremy Howe.
On Monday night, The Age reported that Collingwood have offered Silvagni a four-year deal - the same contract length the Blues have offered. Interestingly, the Pies are also talking the same money as Carlton - in the mid-$600,000 per season.
The report states: "Multiple sources at clubs, and those close to Silvagni, suggested it was unlikely he and Carlton would be able to mend their relationship and extend his time at the Blues into 2026." Reporter Sam McLure later elaborated on 'Footy Classified' on Channel 9, saying: "I'd be very surprised if he's playing in a Carlton jumper [next year].
'The interesting thing here though, is that if he was to leave Carlton and play for Collingwood next year, it wouldn't be about the money. It paints a reasonably dark picture about, I guess, the frustrations in the playing group at Carlton right now.
'I will say I wouldn't be surprised if another club came late after seeing how this is transpiring, because finding solid key defenders at that sort of market rate is quite rare. So maybe a Sydney or a Western Bulldogs or someone that needs a key defender.
'A few weeks for this one to play out. Not certain he'll be playing in a Collingwood jumper Round 1 next year, but I'd be very surprised if he's playing in a Carlton jumper, so it seems like he is on the way out.'
Sad situation for Silvagni family at Carlton
McLure stated it would be a "sad end" to the Silvagni family's ties with Carlton. Jack has played 121 games for the club since 2016, but has been sidelined since Round 16 with injury.
Father Stephen played 312 games for the club, while late grandfather Sergio featured in 239 games for the Blues. Collectively they've played the second-most games in VFL/AFL history for a grandfather-father-son trio, only behind John Sr, John Jr and Josh Kennedy (695).
While Stephen remains a club legend, he had a bitter falling out with the club in 2019 and has never returned in an official capacity. He was removed as the club's list manager that year and has since taken up the same role at St Kilda.
He refused to enter the Carlton rooms to be part of celebrations for Jack's 100th game in 2023, and was a notable absentee earlier this year when the club marked the 30-year anniversary of their 1995 premiership. Every member of the 1995 team - bar Silvagni - attended an official function to mark the anniversary during their game against Geelong in April.

Luke Hodge's advice for Jack Silvagni
Speaking last week, Hawthorn champion Luke Hodge said it would be a "no-brainer" for Jack to join Collingwood. "You've got a club who is really struggling (Carlton), has dropped away from a prelim final two years ago to players who look like they are playing for themselves out on the field," Hodge said on SEN radio. 'They don't know what is going on with the coach. They've got Wrighty (Graham Wright) coming in to make some big calls.
"Versus a club who is offering you more money (Collingwood) and are sitting on top of the ladder (and) who's going to play finals. I understand loyalty is a massive thing, but (it's the) opportunity versus to play in a premiership versus a club that's stable at the moment.
'You sit back and go - the only way he wouldn't go is if Collingwood were paying less and Carlton bumped up the offer. It's common sense.'

Giants champ retires after heart-breaking knee injury
GWS great Callan Ward has called time on his storied AFL career. The 35-year-old confirmed his retirement on Monday, two months after an anterior cruciate ligament injury in his right knee ended his bid for a maiden premiership with the Giants. Ward was in tears when he suffered the injury in the first quarter of their round-12 clash against Richmond. But the much-loved Giants veteran refused to be ruled out of the game entirely. In his 327th and final game, Ward added to his legend and delivered a three-quarter time address on crutches that sparked a three-point win over the Tigers. Inspirational. Despite his injury, Cal Ward fires up his team before the final term.#AFLGiantsTigers — AFL (@AFL) May 31, 2025 It was a similar injury to his left knee that had robbed him of the chance to play in the Giants' only grand final so far, the 2019 loss to Richmond. Ward had put his retirement plans on hold to play one more season in a last attempt to be a part of the Giants' first premiership. Choosing to play an 18th season came with a huge sacrifice, with Ward living apart from his wife Ruby and their three children in Melbourne. In the time since rupturing his ACL, the tough inside midfielder has continued to split his time between the club and his family as the Giants look to go all the way this season. Ward ends his career as the club's all-time games record-holder, having played 267 games since their inaugural 2012 season. Drafted with pick No.19 in 2007, the Yarraville local made his debut for childhood club Western Bulldogs the following year and played 60 games before moving interstate. Ward sits in the Giants' history books listed under many "firsts'': he was their first goalkicker, their first club champion and their first co-captain alongside Phil Davis. He is also a two-time winner of the Brett Kirk Medal and a recipient of the AFLPA's Robert Rose Medal.

Ivan Cleary cops heat over Penrith trainer furore as Bulldogs player's act emerges
Ivan Cleary has copped some backlash for a nonchalant response to the Penrith Panthers trainer furore as Gold Coast Titans kicker Jayden Campbell was distracted during an important kick. It comes as Bailey Hayward's moment during a Tigers penalty has come under scrutiny. The fallout to the Panthers trainer debacle has continued with fans waiting to see how the NRL reacts on Monday to the incident. The Titans had just scored and Campbell was lining up his conversion with the ambition of pushing the score beyond a penalty goal or two-point drop goal. Although Panthers trainer Corey Bocking darted across the field and in his line of sight. Much was made of the incident with Fox Sports commentator Andrew Voss calling out the trainer as boos rang around the stadium. "That is disgraceful, that is absolutely disgraceful," Andrew Voss said. Campbell missed the conversion, before throwing his kicking tee in disgust. However, he soon chased down the kicking tee and appeared to apologise to the ball kid in a classy move. The Titans ended up losing the game with Nathan Cleary icing a two-point field goal to take it to golden point. And Blaize Talagi scored in extra time to seal the victory for the Panthers and move them within a point of the Warriors in fourth. However, coach Cleary has now come under scrutiny for his response to the debacle. "I didn't see was in the wrong place at the wrong time. We had a sub and I changed it at the last minute," Cleary said after the game. "He was trying to communicate with the bench for a late change. It was an honest mistake. He apologised straight away. Gold Coast Titans fans may not feel like an apology is enough with the Panthers finding themselves in yet another trainer controversy this year. And speaking on Monday morning, NRL commentator Voss has called out Cleary for his response to the situation. Voss feels Cleary and the Panthers were too quick to dismiss the incident with the fans rightfully upset. "I didn't see it, that just infuriates me that first line. To say I didn't see it, of course you saw it. C'mon, we replayed it six times. The game was stopped. That just throws petrol on the fire," Voss added on SEN Radio about Cleary's comments. When asked if it could have been an accident from the trainer Voss said: "Yes, but I can't accept that." Bailey Hayward called out for Tigers moment Only a day after the Penrith trainer was slammed for distracting the kicker and the rules being dug up, Bulldogs sub Hayward could have also been at the centre of attention. Voss called out the Bulldogs star as Adam Doueihi was lining up a penalty kick. The Tigers were awarded a penalty in front of goal after Stephen Crichton collected Taylan May high, but remained on the field, with the Wests Tigers star leaving for a category one HIA. And Doueihi lined-up the conversion to push the lead out against the Bulldogs. Although cameras picked up Hayward quite animated as he waved his arms in front of the goal. This could have been deemed another offence and if Doueihi had missed the penalty, the referee would have been within his rights to award the Tigers kicker another opportunity. And Voss called out Hayward following the drama that had unfolded only 24 hours earlier in the Panthers and Titans game. "Even Bailey Hayward yesterday, was waving his arms around in front of a Doueihi kick. And I thought, you goose. What are you doing?" Voss said following the Panthers debacle. Andrew Voss calls for answers from NRL Voss admitted the NRL doesn't have a clear rule on what to do if the trainer does impede a goal kick. But it doesn't excuse the Panthers from the incident. "If a defending player waves their arms in front of a kicker and he misses, the referee is obliged to let the kicker have another shot. But no where does it cover a trainer doing that. An external party to the players. There is no rule. Liam Kennedy would have had to make up a rule in the spirit of the game on the spot," Voss added. "We can bulletproof ourselves for first things first, what we do is what action?"
