Wide receiver Efton Chism looking to be latest undrafted rookie to crack Patriots lineup

Boston Globe4 days ago
'It's awesome. I'm blessed,' he said after a recent training camp workout. 'I really think that being here is a huge opportunity. A huge blessing. I can't thank God enough. I'm just super happy to be here. Every day is a new opportunity, and every day is like I'm just [taking it] one step at a time.'
Whether working as a special teamer or an added option in the passing game, the 23-year-old is making a bid to crash the wide receiver depth chart. Chism, who had 346 receptions for 3,852 yards and 37 touchdowns in five college seasons, has been a steady and dependable presence throughout the spring and summer workouts.

'Chis had about 50 catches, I feel like, in OTAs,' quarterback Drake Maye said in June of the 5-foot-10-inch, 195-pounder.

'I think he's a talented player,' coach Mike Vrabel said of Chism. 'He's dedicated. He's studied extremely hard. He has a good feel for what we're asking him to do.
'I think the biggest thing for receivers is that there's trust from the guy that throws the football. When you earn the quarterback's trust — any one of them that we have, any one of the three — it doesn't take you long to figure out who the quarterback trusts. It's the ones they target. That's a good indicator.'

'Just for me personally, it's just about anything I can do,' Chism said of his mind-set heading into Friday's preseason opener against the Commanders. 'That's being on punt, running down on punt, returning kicks. Anything. Whatever I can do to take advantage of an opportunity, regardless of what's going on. Even if I have to hold or whatever it is, I just want to do that and do it to the best of my ability.'
The coaching staff has been having wide receiver Efton Chism watch videos of former Patriot Danny Amendola.

A longstanding tradition in Foxborough — regardless of the coaching staff — has been to show old film of past franchise greats and use those performances as a theoretical blueprint for attacking the game. When it comes to Chism, offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels has him watching a lot of old film on former Patriots wide receiver Danny Amendola.
'We got a cut-up, and it's all Amendola's catches,' Chism said of Amendola, who displayed the same sort of shiftiness that Chism has shown this summer. 'All the passes he's got even targets on, so I'm going through and watching that right now and trying to just kind of see how he ran through his offense with McDaniels when he was here and learn everything I can do that.'
He's also received a boost from the rest of the receiver room. He and Kendrick Bourne both went to Eastern Washington, and has fostered a relationship with veterans Mack Hollins and Stefon Diggs.
'[Kendrick Bourne] is a big one for me, just kind of coming from the same school. I look up to him a lot,' he said. 'Pop Douglas plays the same position; kind of getting to learn the tips and tricks of how he went about his first couple of years.

'And me and Mack Hollins, we study every night, so learning the playbook through him and Diggs. I think everyone's got a huge impact on me, and it's just been a really cool situation to be in that room.
'I think [Diggs is] one of those guys that he wants the best for the team. He's not selfish. He's not one of those guys that's me, me, me. He's always like, 'Man, like what do you think about this?' He'll even look at us and be like, 'What do you think I could have done here?' '
It'll be a challenging path forward for Chism. The Patriots traditionally keep six wide receivers, and Diggs, Hollins, Douglas, and rookie Kyle Williams appear to be roster locks. That means he's is competing with Bourne, Kayshon Boutte, Ja'Lynn Polk, and Javon Baker for the final two spots. When it comes to making a statement, he's aware that opportunities like the preseason opener represent a terrific chance to make his case.
Regardless of what happens, it seems unlikely that he'll lose the relentlessly optimistic approach. After all, it's gotten him this far.
'It's been super awesome,' he said. 'It's been awesome just learning from the guys and being able to compete right away, because there's no learning curve. You're into it right away. It's been awesome.'

Washington Commanders: 6 takeaways from 'Burgundy & Gold' scrimmage

Brandon Coleman & Sam Cosmi outside for the Burgundy & Gold scrimmage. Washington Commanders coach Dan Quinn wanted to have an intrasquad scrimmage this week for multiple reasons. One, Quinn loves competition, and he understands better than anyone that these scrimmages fire everyone up. Secondly, Quinn was looking at the preseason schedule. Washington's last game was on Friday, while the next one wasn't until the following Monday. A scrimmage would be a good way to fill in the time until preseason game No. 2. Finally, while he didn't say it, Quinn was hoping to get the bad taste out of his mouth from Friday's 48-18 loss to the Patriots. Sure, while the Commanders sat over 30 players, the performance didn't meet Quinn's or Washington's standards. We're not so sure Tuesday's scrimmage helped. There were some good and some bad aspects. Here are six takeaways from Tuesday's "Burgundy & Gold" scrimmage. It's rare to hear any negative reports about quarterback Jayden Daniels during games or practice. He's usually always sharp. He wasn't during Tuesday's scrimmage. That's not all on Daniels, though. He was under constant pressure, often having to check down to his running backs and tight ends. Nothing was open. It's a blip on the radar for Daniels and, perhaps, more encouraging about the defense. Washington's offensive line is rounding into shape, but if the scrimmage was any indication of what we can expect from the Commanders' pass rush in 2025, that's encouraging. Defensive end Dorance Armstrong had another solid day. While Von Miller didn't record a sack, he did record a key pressure, per Zach Selby of There are no concerns with the offensive line. From all indications, most of the pressure came on the inside, and remember, neither of Washington's projected starting guards (Brandon Coleman and Sam Cosmi) practiced. Offensive line play is about cohesion. This group needs time together on the field to become a cohesive unit. The rookie second-rounder has been one of the stars of training camp. He made his impact from the first practice, and that has continued. Amos was active again during Tuesday's scrimmage. Head coach Dan Quinn makes players earn positions, regardless of draft or free-agent status. Amos has already earned it. He made a strong play against the pass and a run stop for a loss in Friday's preseason opener. He's starting Week 1. Trey Amos with another pass breakup off a Bobby Wagner he got beat with speed by Lane and recovered to contest on deep shot INC from Jayden. Frankie Luvu was a free-agent steal in 2024. Even more is expected from the second-team All-Pro in 2025. Luvu has quietly been excellent all camp. He was a key contributor to the defense's dominance on Tuesday. Don't be surprised if Luvu leads the Commanders in sacks this season. He was close last season. The coaches will give him every opportunity to chase down opposing quarterbacks this fall. Duke Riley was signed on Sunday night. The ninth-year veteran was with the team on Monday and making his presence felt during Tuesday's scrimmage. The Commanders need depth behind Luvu and Bobby Wagner. Washington released former fifth-round pick Dominique Hampton because he wasn't showing progress. The team loves Jordan Magee, but he can't seem to stay on the field. Rookie Kain Medrano has impressed, but he's still raw. There's a path for Riley to make this roster. He can play. Duke Riley has already flashed making a couple of nice playsBlew up screenPhysical loud thud on run fit Adam Peters talking to Terry McLaurin at practice. This photo had everyone talking on Tuesday. It was the first time that Terry McLaurin and GM Adam Peters were seen in public speaking to one another. It was a relatively short but cordial conversation. By the time you read this, the lip-readers may have already discovered some of what was said. What does it mean? Who knows, but it can't be bad, right? It was also the first time McLaurin came out and watched the entire practice. No one knows what's going on behind closed doors, but one simple conversation can get contract talks going again.

Washington Commanders WR Oozing Confidence Ahead of 2025 Season

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. During the offseason, the Washington Commanders made notable upgrades on the offensive end to help propel Jayden Daniels towards stardom. Though one has been met with some negative feedback, the young QB's newest weapon is eager to silence his critics. After spending the first six years of his career with the San Francisco 49ers, Deebo Samuel found himself on the move this offseason. He was dealt to the Commanders, landing on another budding contender in the NFC. Earlier in his career, Samuel was viewed as one of the most dynamic wideouts in the NFL. However, the narrative around him has changed in recent years. Having heard all the outside noise for months now, the veteran wideout is confident he can get his career back on track in 2025. More Photo by Thearon W. Henderson/Before being traded, Samuel saw his production take a hit in 2024. On top of this, he's had to deal with countless people in and around the league commenting on his physical appearance. Samuel didn't let any of this get to him and instead used it as a source of motivation. During OTAs, clips of Samuel went viral after he was seen jogging while running routes. This led to incessant chatter about him being out of shape. In the weeks leading up to training camp, Samuel worked hard to prove that wasn't the case. While speaking with Nicki Jhabvala of The Athletic, Samuel opened up on where his head is at heading into his first year in Washington. After all the success the Commanders had last season, he's eager to come in ready to help get them over the hump. "Had to take it to another level as far as conditioning and training," Samuel said. "My mindset is to come back, be in the best shape, be the best version of myself to take that extra step. They were in the NFC Championship last year, but last year is last year." With things between Terry McLaurin and the front office still ongoing, there's no telling what his status will be come Week 1. This leaves Samuel as the guy to fill the void and be Daniels' top option to start the year. Based on his recent remarks, it seems Samuel is ready to take on any role the Commanders throw his way. David Montgomery fantasy football preview 2025: Stats, season outlook, predictions

Rotoworld Staff, David Montgomery 2025 Fantasy Preview 2024: Montgomery remained the league's most heavily featured '1B' back, handling 16 weekly touches while averaging 16 PPR points. Awesome work if you can get it, though the second D-Mont went down for Weeks 16-18 Jahmyr Gibbs went completely stratospheric, averaging 26 touches for 162 yards and two weekly scores in the Lions' most important games of the year. What's changed: Montgomery rushed back from his knee injury for the Divisional Round, touching the ball just seven times in the Lions' shock loss to the Commanders. Montgomery thankfully avoided offseason surgery, though he did have to watch OC Ben Johnson depart for the Bears' head-coaching job. It remains to be seen if new play-caller John Morton will have the same affinity as his successor for the Lions' strict two-man committee. Outlook: Regardless of Morton's intentions, head coach Dan Campbell isn't going to allow Montgomery's role to wither and die. It's more a question of whether Gibbs has become too undeniable. Montgomery is a borderline RB2, but even his worst-case scenario probably still features 6-8 scores on the ground.
