AP PHOTOS: Sao Paulo police clear the Crackland area as residents scatter and denounce abuse

SAO PAULO (AP) — Sao Paulo authorities are trying a full-on approach to end the infamous Crackland area, which experts say could lead to the same results of previous initiatives; an initial success followed by a gradual return of drug users.
The police forces under Gov. Tarcisio de Freitas and Mayor Ricardo Nunes have boosted searches of bags and purses, closed small pensions where drug users took their shots and raided dumpsters where traffickers gathered. A new part of the initiative includes the dismantling of a neighboring shanty town where police say Crackland suppliers work.

Man stabbed multiple times, then runs for help at Fresno Popeyes, police say

A man is in the hospital Saturday afternoon after he was stabbed multiple times. Fresno police Lt. David Madrigal said officers were dispatched at 1:15 p.m. to the Popeyes, located at the 3000 block N. Blackstone. Officers arrived and found a victim inside the Popeyes, who was stabbed multiple times. He was taken to a local hospital and his condition is stable, Madrigal said. Officers learned the stabbing actually took place across the street at an apartment building. The victim then ran across the street and went inside the Popeyes for help, Madrigal said. 'Apparently, this assault is possibly related to an incident that took place earlier today,' Madrigal said. He said officers and detectives are investigating and trying to determine all the facts. The stabbing stems from a female, Madrigal said. But none of the involved parties were dating. Detectives were canvassing for surveillance video and witnesses are cooperating. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 559-621-7000.

Suspect arrested after man found dead outside Orange County library

A suspect was arrested after a man was found dead outside a library in Orange County. On June 2, Westminster police responded to an unresponsive man on the 8200 block of 13th Street in Westminster at 6:15 p.m. The victim, who was only identified as a homeless man, was pronounced dead at the scene. No suspect was found nearby, but the death was being investigated as a homicide. Collected evidence helped detectives identify James Metcalf, 54, of Westminster, as the primary suspect, the Orange County Register reported. Metcalf was already in police custody on suspicion of vandalism. Details on how detectives linked Metcalf to the murder were not provided. Metcalf was arrested earlier in the day near the area where the body was later found, police told the O.C. Register. It's unclear whether the suspect and the victim were known to each other. No further details, including the victim's identity or the nature of his fatal injuries, were released. Anyone with information on the case is asked to call Detective Figueroa at 714-548-3783 or the Westminster Police Watch Commander at 714-548-3767.
