Swedish police have arrested a teen suspect after three youths aged from 15 to 20 were killed in a shooting at a hair salon, authorities said on Wednesday, with rising concern over gang violence in the Scandinavian nation.
Tuesday's shooting took place in broad daylight in the university city of Uppsala, a day before it hosted the Valborg spring festival, which draws more than 100,000 people for bonfires and celebrations in the streets, many of them students.
"One person has been arrested, suspected of murder," police commander Erik Akerlund told reporters, with prosecutors saying the suspect was 16.
The teen had slipped away from a facility for troubled teens two weeks ago, according to prosecutors and local media.
Swedish media reported that at least one of the dead had connections to a criminal gang, though police would not confirm those reports.
"That is something we are obviously looking into, but we don't want to commit ourselves to only that possibility," Uppsala police spokesman Stefan Larsson said.
Uppsala, about 70 kilometres north of Stockholm, is the home base for Sweden's two most notorious gangs, Rumba and Foxtrot.
Their leaders, Ismail Abdo and Rawa Majid, are both now believed to be orchestrating operations from abroad.
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson called the shooting "an extremely violent act."
"It almost looks like an execution," he told the news agency TT.
Sweden has struggled for years to rein in shootings and bombings between rival gangs.
Akerlund said several people "considered of interest in the investigation" had been brought in for questioning.
He said police had obtained camera footage from the scene and "secured a lot of evidence."
Prosecutor Andreas Nygren said the suspect was arrested at his home around two hours after the shooting, and that "more than 100 interrogations" had been held as of Wednesday morning. (AFP)

In a video address to the nation posted on social media, President Gustavo Petro also promised investigations to find the perpetrators of the "day of pain". "What matters most today is that all Colombians focus with the energy of our hearts, with our will to live ... on ensuring that Dr Miguel Uribe stays alive." Uribe, a strong critic of Petro, is a member of the Democratic Center party, which announced last October his intention to run in the 2026 presidential election. Authorities said there was no specific threat made against the politician before the incident. Like many public figures in Colombia, Uribe had close personal protection. Thai Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesman Nikorndej Balankura said in a video statement the ministry "is deeply saddened to announce that today, the Royal Thai Embassy in Tel Aviv was informed by a representative of the Israeli government that Mr Nattapong Pinta, the last Thai hostage, has been confirmed dead." An Israeli military statement, which gave his name as Natthapong Pinta, said on Saturday its forces had retrieved his body from the Rafah area of southern Gaza. It said he was taken alive as a hostage during Hamas's October 7, 2023, attack on Israel and "was murdered while in captivity". The Israeli military statement blamed the Mujahideen Brigades, an armed group close to Hamas ally Islamic Jihad. Nikorndej said Nattapong was one of three Thais held hostage in Gaza. The other two were confirmed dead in 2024 but Nikorndej said Israel has "not yet been able to retrieve their corpses". Abrego Garcia's return marks a turning point in a case that became a broader symbol of criticisms of President Donald Trump's aggressive immigration policies. Critics, including many congressional Democrats, pointed to the case as a sign that the administration was disregarding civil liberties in its push to step up deportations. But the administration insisted that Abrego Garcia was a member of the MS-13 gang, an accusation that his lawyers denied. On Friday, administration officials portrayed the indictment of Abrego Garcia by a grand jury in Tennessee as vindication of their approach – even though the charges were filed on May 21, more than two months after Abrego Garcia's March 15 deportation. At a press conference, Bondi said Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele agreed to return Abrego Garcia to the US after US officials presented his government with an arrest warrant.
