Israel targeted Iran's air defences and missile launchers on Saturday as it pressed its bid to dismantle its arch-foe's military capabilities, after a night of mutual attacks.
Israel's massive strikes on Iran, which it calls an existential threat, have hit nuclear and military facilities, killed top commanders and dozens of civilians, and sought to destroy the country's defence capabilities.
Iran has hit back with volleys of missiles that lit up the night sky over Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, killing three people and wounding dozens.
Following decades of enmity and conflict by proxy, it is the first time that Israel and Iran have traded fire with such intensity, with fears of a prolonged conflict engulfing the region.
Israel began striking Iran early on Friday in an operation it has dubbed "Rising Lion", and has since killed several top Iranian generals, including senior leaders of the Revolutionary Guards' air arm.
On Saturday, Israel's military said it was striking dozens of missile launchers in Iran after announcing it had targeted air defences with a wave of strikes in the Tehran area.
Two senior Iranian generals have been killed in Israeli strikes, Iranian state television reported on Saturday, as Israel kept up its assault.
Iran's ambassador to the United Nations said on Friday that 78 people had been killed and 320 wounded in the first wave of strikes by Israel.
Iran called on its citizens to unite in defence of the country as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urged them to rise up against their government.
Air raid sirens and explosions rang out across Israel through the night, with many residents holed up in bomb shelters until home defence commanders stood down alerts. (AFP)

Iranian media later said Israel attacked a facility affiliated with the defence ministry in the central city of Isfahan, reporting "possible damage". The Israeli military said its air force had targeted "more than 80" positions in Iran's capital overnight. Following the strikes, US President Donald Trump said Washington "had nothing to do" with ally Israel's intense bombardment campaign that was launched early Friday, hitting key military and nuclear sites as well as residential areas. But Trump also threatened to launch "the full strength and might" of the US military if Iran attacks American interests, saying on his Truth Social platform that "we can easily get a deal done between Iran and Israel, and end this bloody conflict!!!" Iran's top diplomat Abbas Araghchi nonetheless said that Tehran had "solid proof" that US forces had supported Israel in its attacks. Israeli police said six people were killed and at least 180 injured at the site of an overnight missile strike in Bat Yam, near Tel Aviv on Israel's Mediterranean coast. First responders wearing helmets and headlamps picked through the bombed-out building as dawn broke, with police saying at least seven people were missing. "There was an explosion and I thought the whole house had collapsed," said Bat Yam resident Shahar Ben Zion. In northern Israel, rescuers and medics said a strike late on Saturday destroyed a three-storey building in the town of Tamra, killing four women. Israeli authorities have reported a total toll of 13 dead and 380 injured in the country since Friday. Iran's UN ambassador said 78 people were killed and 320 wounded in Friday's first wave of Israeli strikes. Iranian authorities have not provided an updated toll as of Sunday, but Tehran said Israel has killed several top military commanders and nuclear scientists. (AFP)

China's top diplomat Wang Yi held phone calls with his Israeli and Iranian counterparts on Saturday, the foreign ministry said, in which he made clear to both Beijing's support for Tehran. The two Middle Eastern powers exchanged fire on Saturday, a day after Israel unleashed an unprecedented aerial bombing campaign that targeted Iranian nuclear and military facilities. International calls for restraint are multiplying as fears grow the region could be on the threshold of a broader conflict. China's foreign ministry released separate statements late on Saturday announcing Wang's phone calls with his counterparts. Wang first spoke to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, telling him Beijing 'supports Iran in safeguarding its national sovereignty, defending its legitimate rights and interests, and ensuring the safety of its people'. China enjoys close ties with Iran — Beijing is its largest commercial partner and the main buyer of its oil, with Tehran still under crushing US sanctions. Wang told Araghchi that Israel's actions 'seriously violate… the basic norms governing international relations', and noted the attacks on Tehran's nuclear facilities 'have set a dangerous precedent with potentially catastrophic consequences'. A second statement released shortly afterwards detailed Wang's talk with Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar. Wang told Saar that 'China clearly opposes Israel's violation of international law by attacking Iran with force', calling its behaviour 'unacceptable'. Wang recounted his phone call with Araghchi to Saar, the statement said. 'Diplomatic means for the Iranian nuclear issue have not been exhausted and there is still hope for a peaceful solution. Force cannot bring lasting peace,' Wang was quoted as saying. He told both men that China was willing to play 'a constructive role' in de-escalating the conflict.

The Republican president, on his 79th birthday, sat on a special viewing stand south of the White House to watch the display of American military might, which began early and moved swiftly as light rain fell and clouds shrouded the Washington Monument. The procession, with more than 6,000 soldiers and 128 Army tanks, was one Trump tried to make happen in his first term after seeing such an event in Paris in 2017, but the plans never came together until the parade was added to an event recognising the Army's 250th anniversary. 'Every other country celebrates their victories. It's about time America did too,' Trump declared in brief remarks at the parade's end. Early in the evening's pageantry, the Army's Golden Knights parachute team descended from overcast skies toward the reviewing stand. The team had been scheduled to appear at the end of the parade, but jumped earlier than planned in the drizzly skies above the National Mall. At times, Trump stood and saluted as troops marched past the reviewing stand.
