China's top diplomat Wang Yi held phone calls with his Israeli and Iranian counterparts on Saturday, the foreign ministry said, in which he made clear to both Beijing's support for Tehran.
The two Middle Eastern powers exchanged fire on Saturday, a day after Israel unleashed an unprecedented aerial bombing campaign that targeted Iranian nuclear and military facilities.
International calls for restraint are multiplying as fears grow the region could be on the threshold of a broader conflict.
China's foreign ministry released separate statements late on Saturday announcing Wang's phone calls with his counterparts.
Wang first spoke to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, telling him Beijing 'supports Iran in safeguarding its national sovereignty, defending its legitimate rights and interests, and ensuring the safety of its people'.
China enjoys close ties with Iran — Beijing is its largest commercial partner and the main buyer of its oil, with Tehran still under crushing US sanctions.
Wang told Araghchi that Israel's actions 'seriously violate… the basic norms governing international relations', and noted the attacks on Tehran's nuclear facilities 'have set a dangerous precedent with potentially catastrophic consequences'.
A second statement released shortly afterwards detailed Wang's talk with Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar.
Wang told Saar that 'China clearly opposes Israel's violation of international law by attacking Iran with force', calling its behaviour 'unacceptable'.
Wang recounted his phone call with Araghchi to Saar, the statement said.
'Diplomatic means for the Iranian nuclear issue have not been exhausted and there is still hope for a peaceful solution. Force cannot bring lasting peace,' Wang was quoted as saying.
He told both men that China was willing to play 'a constructive role' in de-escalating the conflict.

Israel keeps up Iran strikes after missile barrage

Israel keeps up Iran strikes after missile barrage A plume of heavy smoke rises from an oil refinery in southern Tehran after it was hit in an Israeli strike. Photo: AFP Israel pressed its bombardment campaign on Iran on Sunday, striking a defence facility and fuel depots as the two arch foes kept up their most intense confrontation in history. It came after Iranian missile fire targeting Israel killed at least 10 people overnight, according to authorities, pushing the death toll up to 13 since Iran began its retaliatory strikes on Friday. In Tehran, a heavy cloud of smoke hung above the city after Israeli aircraft hit two fuel depots. For days, Iranians have formed long queues at petrol stations, fearing shortages. Iranian media later said Israel attacked a facility affiliated with the defence ministry in the central city of Isfahan, reporting "possible damage". The Israeli military said its air force had targeted "more than 80" positions in Iran's capital overnight. Following the strikes, US President Donald Trump said Washington "had nothing to do" with ally Israel's intense bombardment campaign that was launched early Friday, hitting key military and nuclear sites as well as residential areas. But Trump also threatened to launch "the full strength and might" of the US military if Iran attacks American interests, saying on his Truth Social platform that "we can easily get a deal done between Iran and Israel, and end this bloody conflict!!!" Iran's top diplomat Abbas Araghchi nonetheless said that Tehran had "solid proof" that US forces had supported Israel in its attacks. Israeli police said six people were killed and at least 180 injured at the site of an overnight missile strike in Bat Yam, near Tel Aviv on Israel's Mediterranean coast. First responders wearing helmets and headlamps picked through the bombed-out building as dawn broke, with police saying at least seven people were missing. "There was an explosion and I thought the whole house had collapsed," said Bat Yam resident Shahar Ben Zion. In northern Israel, rescuers and medics said a strike late on Saturday destroyed a three-storey building in the town of Tamra, killing four women. Israeli authorities have reported a total toll of 13 dead and 380 injured in the country since Friday. Iran's UN ambassador said 78 people were killed and 320 wounded in Friday's first wave of Israeli strikes. Iranian authorities have not provided an updated toll as of Sunday, but Tehran said Israel has killed several top military commanders and nuclear scientists. (AFP)

Frederick Ma says tariffs also offer opportunity

Frederick Ma says tariffs also offer opportunity Frederick Ma says Hong Kong plays a vital role as a super connector and a free port. File photo: RTHK The newly appointed chairman of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council Frederick Ma said on Sunday that US President Donald Trump's policy measures have significantly impacted global trade, presenting both challenges and opportunities for Hong Kong. Speaking on a Commercial Radio programme, Ma, who has been in office for two weeks, said that Trump's tariff measures have reduced business certainty and investment willingness, ultimately hindering economic development. However, he said that Hong Kong plays a vital role as a super connector given that the SAR is a free port. "Since he took office, certainty has definitely decreased a lot. Many people say they won't invest in this environment. The tariff measures have affected many aspects in trade," he said. "Where there is crisis, there is also opportunity. Hong Kong is actually a good place because we do not have tariffs. The volume of goods going to the US is decreasing. "Since the government started developing in Asean and Middle Eastern markets, trade with these regions has grown rapidly within these past few years. We need new thinking to 'go global' under these circumstances." Ma also said that the council is assisting small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in identifying emerging markets, including potential opportunities in Africa. "We must diversify. Can we explore places like Africa? Africa is part of the Belt and Road Initiative. It has a large population, and some of its countries are developing well," he said. "We need to discover more new markets to help SMEs in their supply and industrial chains." Ma urged businesses to move beyond past successes, stressing the need to strengthen digital capabilities and leverage e-commerce opportunities.
