Bribery accusations by Kerala businessman baseless, says ED
KOCHI: The Enforcement Directorate has dismissed bribery allegations made by Kollam-based businessman Aneesh Babu against officers of the central agency, saying the complainant, who is under investigation for money laundering, is attempting to 'malign the image' of the ED through a 'media trial'.
'The allegations made by Aneesh are an attempt to trigger a media trial with the intent to malign the image of the Directorate of Enforcement. The allegations made are contradictory and propagated through media platforms to prejudice local public opinion,' the ED stated.
Instead of complying with the summons, Aneesh approached the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) with certain allegations, and he changed the name of the ED officer over time, clearly revealing his intent to mislead and defame officers, the agency said.
VACB had named an assistant director of ED's Kochi unit as the first accused in a bribery allegation involving the extortion of allegedly Rs 2 crore from a businessman in exchange for halting an ED investigation. On Saturday, the VACB's Kochi unit arrested Renjith Warrier, a Kochi-based chartered accountant, following the earlier arrest of two other accused.
Commenting on VACB's investigation, ED officers said the central agency remains committed to upholding the rule of law.

Caught on camera: Restaurant vandalised over delay in food service in Ghaziabad
Panic broke out late Saturday night at a restaurant in Ghaziabad when a group of armed men stormed in and vandalised the premises, causing chaos amongst diners, including women and children. The incident occurred in the Rajnagar Extension area at a restaurant called Apni Rasoi around 11:30 to the FIR filed by the restaurant owner, Akshit Tyagi, the ruckus began over a delay in food service. Initially, there was a heated exchange of abuses. A few hours later, around 6–7 individuals arrived on motorcycles and a WagonR taxi and attacked the restaurant wielding sticks, rods and the violent attack, the men allegedly damaged two laptops, an LED screen, and a billing machine. They also reportedly took Rs 1,760 from the billing counter. At the time of the incident, several families, including women and children, were dining at the restaurant. Frightened by the sudden violence, they fled the scene to save their lives. WATCH: The entire episode was captured on the restaurant's CCTV cameras, which police are now examining to identify the culprits. Tyagi also alleged in his complaint that some of the accused had previously visited the restaurant on June 6, drunk and involved in a brawl, but the matter was settled that of three accused have come to light - Mintu Tyagi, Rajdeep, and Ravi Sharma. Based on the complaint, an FIR has been registered under IPC sections 352 (assault or use of criminal force), 115(2), 324(4), 351(3), and 309(6).Police are now scrutinising the CCTV footage to identify and arrest the accused. Tax evasion a national crime, take stern action against fake firms: CM
1 2 Lucknow: Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday directed officials to act against shell companies and fake firms that are deriving undue benefits against the rules. He said that such acts were an attempt to misuse the facilities meant for genuine traders and the matter should be dealt with seriously. The CM, while conducting a high-level review of the state tax department, directed officials to ensure transparency in tax collection and adopt a policy of technological efficiency and strict enforcement. Calling the act of such companies 'unforgivable', Yogi said, "Tax evasion is a national crime that negatively impacts development plans and welfare schemes." Stressing that GST is a consumer-based tax system, he noted that areas with higher population density were naturally expected to generate increased tax revenues for the state coffers. He instructed officials to develop special strategies for zones where tax collection is below average. Yogi directed that information on suspicious firms registered under central GST (CGST) be shared with the higher authorities in Delhi for cancellation of their registration. He ordered in-depth departmental investigations for firms under state GST (SGST). Such inspections are essential to ensure that genuine businesses can operate fairly and without interference." During the meeting, officials informed the CM that nearly Rs 18,162 crore was collected through GST and VAT tax components in April and May of the 2025-26 financial year. The target for the year assigned to the department is Rs 1.76 lakh crore. Appreciating the progress, the CM directed officials to achieve the target through regular monitoring. The CM praised the achievements of 14 zones, including Lucknow, Ayodhya, Bareilly, Agra, Ghaziabad, Gautam Budh Nagar, Meerut, Jhansi, and Saharanpur divisions, for achieving increased targets. In contrast, officials in Varanasi, Prayagraj, Kanpur, Etawah, Aligarh, and Moradabad were reprimanded for collecting less than 50% of the stipulated target. He said that a detailed report should be prepared covering the role of officials deputed in the low-performing regions and sent to the govt. He emphasized that revenue was not just a number, but the foundation of development, and every officer should carry out their duties with responsibility and sensitivity. "In areas with weak tax collection, additional, joint, and deputy commissioners should personally engage with traders to build trust, cooperation, and a sense of compliance among the taxpayer community," said Yogi.

Yahya was shot dead by IDF soldiers eight months ago. Both brothers were born—and killed—in the Khan Yunis area. A joint statement by the IDF and Shin Bet confirmed that Sinwar and Rafah Brigade Commander Mohammad Shabaneh were killed in an underground command center beneath the hospital. Items belonging to them, along with intelligence materials and other bodies, were also recovered. Footage released by the IDF showed a body being dragged from a tunnel under the hospital. Defense Minister Israel Katz praised the operation, calling Sinwar an 'arch-murderer' and warning remaining Hamas leaders that they are next. He specifically named Gaza-based commander Az al-Din al-Haddad and Qatar-based leader Khalil al-Hayya. The May 13 strike also killed Hamas commander Muhammad Shabana and senior figure Mahdi Kuwar. Hamas's October 7 attack killed at least 1,180 people and saw 252 hostages taken. Of the 55 hostages still in Gaza, 32 are believed to be dead.
