Griffiths and Alker seize early lead in star-studded Hassan II Golf Trophy in Morocco

Khaleej Times06-02-2025

England's Steve Griffiths and New Zealand's Steve Alker got off to a strong start at the $2.5 million Trophy Hassan II, carding matching four-under-par 69s to share the lead after the opening round at Royal Golf Dar Es Salam's Red Course in Rabat, Morocco.
The event, now in its 49th edition, is a highlight on the PGA Champions Tour calendar.
Griffiths, who posted five birdies against a single bogey, found himself atop the 66-player field alongside Alker. The New Zealander had a rollercoaster round, making the turn at one-over-par 37 before rallying with five birdies on his back nine, including a spectacular closing stretch of three consecutive birdies.
At 53, Alker remains one of the most consistent players on the Champions Tour, having secured victories in 2022 and 2024. His accolades include topping the Champions Tour Money List, winning the Charles Schwab Cup, and earning both the Player of the Year award and the Byron Nelson Award.
Meanwhile, Indian golfer Jeev Milkha Singh, playing on a sponsor's invite, carded a one-over 74 to sit in a tie for 33rd. Reflecting on his round, Singh told Khaleej Times: 'I played really well – it is a beautiful golf course with perfect weather and hardly a breath of wind around – despite it being a tree-lined golf course.
'The highlight of my first round was an eagle three on hole 13 – I holed a lovely 20-foot curler downhill Howe3ver, I made no birdies, despite having a lot of birdie chances,' he added. :I left a few shots out there. I was encouraged by my play today and am looking forward to round two on Friday.'
The 54-hole tournament boasts a star-studded field featuring legends of the game. Sitting just outside the lead are South African Ernie Els, former Dubai resident Thomas Bjorn, England's Paul Broadhurst, and Ireland's Padraig Harrington, all finishing at two-under-par 71.
With 32 players at level par or better, the competition remains wide open heading into the final two rounds.
In addition to the PGA Champions Tour event, the 28th edition of the Lalla Meryem Cup is taking place on the Blue Course, showcasing talent from the Ladies European Tour.
American Brianna Navarrosa leads at six-under-par, with two players trailing by a single shot, while a few competitors were still on the course when scores were last updated.
With two rounds to play, the stage is set for an exciting battle at Royal Golf Dar Es Salam.

CASSIDY PRODUCES DOMINANT LIGHTS-TO-FLAG VICTORY ON RAIN-SOAKED SUNDAY IN SHANGHAI

Amid torrid conditions, Jaguar TCS Racing's Nick Cassidy converted from pole, leading every lap of the race to produce a first win of the season in the 2025 Hankook Shanghai E-Prix Round 11 at a rain-soaked Shanghai International Circuit. Cassidy topped a weather-truncated Groups-only qualifying session to seal pole and strode away into an immediate lead, where he was able to stay for the duration of Round 11 in tricky conditions as the rain continued to fall – though less heavily than throughout the morning. The win was a first lights-to-flag victory of the GEN3 Evo era and a return to the top step for the New Zealander. Reigning champion Pascal Wehrlein got the better of his teammate through the first round of ATTACK MODE activations; the German leading home António Félix da Costa despite an early slip, as TAG Heuer Porsche capitalised on a Nissan non-score to round out the podium and propel the Stuttgart marque to the top of the FIA Teams' World Championship table – a full reversal after TAG Heuer Porsche failed to score on Saturday. Jake Hughes (Maserati MSG Racing) brought it home fourth, Jean-Éric Vergne (DS PENSKE) fifth and Nico Mueller (Andretti) finished sixth. The second Maserati of Stoffel Vandoorne finished seventh despite pirouetting two laps from the chequered flag, ahead of Robin Frijns (Envision Racing), Lucas di Grassi (Lola Yamaha ABT) and NEOM McLaren's Taylor Barnard. The difficult conditions caught out a number of other drivers including Jake Dennis, Nyck de Vries, Dan Ticktum and Sam Bird with standing water significant in spots around the circuit throughout the race. Even so, 21 of the 22 cars managed to make it to the end of the race as their race craft was pushed to the limit. The result sees Rowland's lead reduce to 68 points over Pascal Wehrlein (103 points), with da Costa in third (88 points) with only five races remaining this season. Porsche retakes the top spot in the FIA Teams' World Championship running from Nissan, while Nissan leads Porsche in the FIA Manufacturers' World Championship standings. Nick Cassidy, No. 37, Jaguar TCS Racing said: 'This weekend is a massive highlight. Really proud of all our guys. Qualifying form yesterday was huge for us, we were in the game, and I'm just proud that we've come back today and our pace was absolutely unbelievable – what a race. I feel like there have been so many wins that probably should have been ours at the end of last season that never happened, and it feels like we've been waiting a long time. That's certainly on your mind when you go through the last couple of laps, and now to get that monkey off the back is awesome.' The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship continues in Jakarta with Round 12 on 21 June.

Nepali Sherpa scales Mount Everest for a record 31st time

File photo/AFP Nepali Sherpa guide Kami Rita scaled Mount Everest for the 31st time on Tuesday, breaking the record he set last year. The 55-year-old reached the 29,032 foot peak - the highest in the world - by the traditional southeast ridge route while guiding a 22-member Indian army team, officials said, adding that 27 other Sherpas also accompanied the group. "He is a very passionate climber," said Pasang Phurba, director of the Seven Summit Treks company for which Kami Rita works, adding that Rita was currently descending to lower camps. Rita first climbed Everest in 1994 and has done so every year except for three years when authorities closed the mountain to climbers for various reasons. More than 8,000 people have climbed Mount Everest since it was first scaled by New Zealander Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay in 1953. After Rita, another Sherpa, Pasang Dawa, has ascended Everest the most with 29 climbs. Among non-Sherpa climbers, the record is held by British guide Kenton Cool who has accomplished the feat 19 times, followed by American climbers Dave Hahn and Garrett Madison with 15 times each. One of the poorest countries in the world, Nepal is home to eight of the world's 14 highest peaks and is heavily reliant on climbing, trekking, and tourism for foreign exchange. Guiding foreign climbers to Everest and other peaks provides crucial family income to many Sherpas. Authorities have issued 468 permits to climbers for Everest this March-May climbing season, and more than 300 climbers and Sherpas have already scaled the peak, officials said. Two climbers are known to have died on the mountain this month and there have also been unconfirmed reports of other deaths.
