Land pooling policy: SAD stages demonstration; AAP govt tweaks policy
SAD leaders and workers demonstrated in Ludhiana against the policy. Addressing a gathering, SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal termed the policy as 'anti-farmers' and appealed to village panchayats affected by the policy to pass resolutions against it.
He said the SAD would intensify its agitation against the land pooling policy across the State by holding demonstrations (dharnas). 'On July 28, we will hold 'dharna' in Mohali and on August 4 in Bathinda,' he said.
Meanwhile, the Cabinet meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann in its amendments approved that farmers will now receive an annual livelihood allowance of ₹1 lakh until their land is developed — a fivefold increase compared to the ₹20,000 given by previous governments, said an official statement.
'The government has also assured long-term support by announcing a 10% annual increment in this ₹1 lakh amount. To ensure faster and more transparent processes, the government will now issue a Letter of Intent (LOI) to farmers within 21 days. For the convenience of farmers, the LOI can be sold or used to obtain loans. Furthermore, until development work actually begins, farmers can continue cultivating their land and will receive an additional ₹50,000 per year from the government,' the statement added.

Bikram Majithia granted 4 more weeks to amend plea in DA case, Punjab & Haryana HC adjourns matter again
The Punjab and Haryana High Court Tuesday granted four more weeks to Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader and former Punjab minister Bikram Singh Majithia to amend a petition challenging his arrest in a disproportionate assets case. The matter will now be heard on August 26. Majithia, lodged in New Nabha Jail since July 6, was arrested by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau on June 25 from Amritsar for allegedly amassing assets disproportionate to his known income. Last week, a Mohali court extended his judicial custody till August 2. The SAD leader first approached the high court on July 3, seeking relief against his 'illegal arrest and remand.' On that day, his lawyers sought a day's adjournment to place additional documents on record. When the case was taken up on July 4, they withdrew the plea and filed a fresh petition, which came up on July 8. In the hearing on July 8, Majithia's counsel asked for three more weeks, saying that they needed time to bring on record the remand orders and additional material, leading the court to list the matter for July 29. At Tuesday's hearing, Majithia's lawyers sought another four weeks to further amend and update the petition, which Justice Tribhuvan Dahiya allowed, fixing the next hearing for August 26. In his petition, Majithia has alleged that he was picked up from his Amritsar home around 9 am on June 25 and kept in custody for over two hours before his formal arrest at 11.20 am, in breach of his constitutional and statutory rights. He contended that this amounts to illegal detention under Article 22(2) of the Constitution and Section 187 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (formerly Section 167 CrPC). The plea also challenges the June 26 remand order as 'manifestly perverse and non-speaking,' alleging that the magistrate ignored mandatory requirements such as examining the case diary and recording judicial satisfaction. Majithia's counsel further argued that the order disregarded a March 4, 2025, Supreme Court directive rejecting custodial interrogation and instead required him to cooperate with the Special Investigation Team (SIT) — directions he claim to have fully complied with. Despite this, the state allegedly obtained a fresh remand by 'concealing facts and misrepresenting urgency' to extract a confession, violating Article 20(3) of the Constitution (right against self-incrimination), it was alleged. Terming his arrest and remand a 'gross violation' of Articles 14, 20, and 21, Majithia sought quashing of the remand order and safeguards against what he said was further abuse of process. The petition was filed through advocates Sartej Singh Narula, Damanbir Singh Sobti, Arshdeep Singh Cheema, Arshdeep Singh Kler, and Sultan Singh Sangha.

Amit Shah blasts Rahul Gandhi, Chidambaram in his Lok Sabha address: ‘Pakistan a mistake committed by Congress'
Union Home Minister Amit Shah blasted Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and the Congress Party in the Lok Sabha during the Monsoon Session of Parliament on July 28. He was speaking about Operation Mahadev, where three terrorists linked to the Pahalgam terror attack, were killed by the Indian Army. 'Pakistan is the root of all terrorism, and Pakistan is a mistake committed by the Congress. Had they rejected partition, it would not be there,' Amit Shah said. He further claimed, 'Between 2005 and 11, there were 27 terrorists attacks. What did Congress government do? … they just sent dossiers to Pakistan.' Lashing out further at the Opposition, Amit Shah asked, 'Yes, it is our responsibility, but when you (Congress) were in power, a lot of attacks happened… who will take responsibility for that?' He also accused the Opposition of 'shielding' Pakistan, adding, 'What hurt us was former Home Minister P Chidambaram questioning the Pakistani link of the terrorists. Why are you shielding Pakistan? India's ex-home minister is asking for proof. They could have directly asked me, or the media. It was everywhere… you all will not be spared.' Further, the minister also criticised the Congress for objecting to the 2002 NDA government's Prevention of Terrorism Act. 'In 2002, Atalji's NDA government had brought POTA. Who objected to POTA then? It was the Congress party... After coming to power in 2004, the Sonia Gandhi-Manmohan Singh government scrapped the POTA law... For whose benefit did Congress scrap POTA?' Amit Shah asked. He also blamed former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru for the situation in Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir (PoK), stating, '...Yesterday, they (Congress) were raising questions about why there was no war... Today, PoK exists only because of Jawaharlal Nehru... In 1960, they gave 80 per cent of the Indus waters to Pakistan... In 1971, during the Shimla Agreement, they (Congress) forgot to ask about PoK. If they had taken PoK then, we would not have to carry out attacks on camps there now…' Amit Shah further informed the Lok Sabha that there was enough proof that the three terrorists slain in Operation Mahadev were from Pakistan, adding that even chocolates found with them were made in Islamabad. 'We have confirmed the terrorists' Pakistani links. We have Pakistan's voter list. What will you get by saving Pakistan? Who are you trying to save? I want to tell him we have the proof that all three terrorists were from Pakistan. All their rifles, and even the chocolates we found, were made in Pakistan,' he said. Lashkar-e-Taiba top commander Suleman, involved in the Pahalgam terror attack, was among the three terrorists killed by security forces during the recent Operation Mahadev in Jammu and Kashmir, Amit Shah told the Parliament. ‘Bharat ki baat sunata hoon': Manish Tewari on being ‘benched' by Cong during Op Sindoor debate
Congress MP Manish Tewari on Tuesday evoked Manoj Kumar's iconic song from 'Purab aur Pashchim' — 'Bharat ka rehne waala hoon, Bharat ki baat sunata hoon' — as he shared on X a media report on being 'benched' by his party during the Operation Sindoor debate. There had been intense speculation whether Tewari and Shashi Tharoor, both part of the diplomatic delegations that had been sent abroad to convey India's stand, would speak in the Lower House or not during the ongoing debate on the Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor. Taking to X, Tewari shared the screenshot of a media report which was headlined — ''Spoke in favour of govt': Why Congress benched Shashi Tharoor, Manish Tewari during Operation Sindoor debate.' The report stated that none of the leaders picked by the Centre to represent India globally as part of delegations post Operation Sindoor found a place in the list of speakers from the Congress party. Along with the screenshot of the report and a picture of him with the tricolour in the backdrop, Tewari posted, 'Hai preet jahaan ki reet sada, main geet wahaan ke gaata hoon, Bharat ka rehne waala hoon, Bharat ki baat sunata hoon – Jai Hind.' These are the lyrics from a song in the 1970 Manoj Kumar starrer 'Purab Aur Paschim'. Tewari did not elaborate any further on his views about the whole issue. Congress party sources on Monday said the party had asked Tharoor if he was interested in speaking during the Operation Sindoor debate in Parliament but he declined and instead expressed a desire to speak on 'The Indian Ports Bill, 2025'. There has been intense speculation on whether Tharoor, who led the delegation to the US among other countries, will be picked as a speaker by the Congress given that his enthusiastic endorsement of the government's action following the terror attack has soured his ties with the party. The BJP-led ruling National Democratic Alliance and opposition parties are fielding their top guns during the discussion in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha. Opposition parties have framed their public criticism of the government around alleged intelligence lapses behind the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which left 26 civilians killed, and US President Donald Trump's claims of mediating a ceasefire between India and Pakistan. Rahul Gandhi has repeatedly attacked the government's foreign policy, claiming that India did not receive international support on Operation Sindoor and has cited Trump's frequent mediation claims to target the ruling alliance. The government has rejected Trump's claims.
