Police warn of possible dangerous drugs batch after death and cardiac arrests

Yahoo4 hours ago

The death of a man in the North East could be linked to a dangerous drugs batch, police have warned.
Northumbria Police have launched an investigation into the death of a man in his 40s, who was found dead in the Harlow Green area of Gateshead on Friday.
Officers believe his death and four cardiac arrests in the area since Thursday could be linked to the same drugs batch, but have said enquiries are at a very early stage.
The man's next of kin has been informed.

Chief Superintendent Aelfwynn Sampson, of Northumbria Police, called for users to be mindful, warning the batch of drugs 'could have fatal consequences'.
She said: 'Protecting people from harm is our utmost priority as a force, and that means doing all we can to warn people about a potential threat to their lives.
'While it remains unconfirmed at this stage, we are exploring the possibility that this death and the cardiac arrests are linked to drugs and possibly the same batch.
'While we would never advocate anyone taking illegal drugs, the fact is that there are people in our area with drug addictions and we want to warn them about this potentially lethal substance.
'Given the similarities of these reports from the same area, it is important that we ensure this warning message is shared far and wide.'
Anyone with information is asked to get in touch with Northumbria Police.

Police identify 3 sets of human remains found along shoreline in Palos Verdes Estates

Police have identified three sets of human remains that were found along the shoreline in Palos Verdes Estates. The remains, all stemming from separate missing persons cases, have been under investigation since 2023. In January 2021, Mark Paulson was reported missing after he failed to return from a boating trip out of Redondo Beach. He was last heard from when he reported engine trouble with his boat and expressed concern about being blown out to sea. A search effort involving the U.S. Coast Guard, Harbor Patrol, and Los Angeles County lifeguards was conducted, but Paulson was not found. Two years later in January 2023, a human femur was located off the shoreline. Through DNA matching, Palos Verdes police confirmed the remains linked to Paulson. 'Based on the totality of the circumstances, there is no suspicion of foul play,' investigators said. 'He would have been 68 years old.' In November 2024, a human skull and a bone were located and have been identified as Raymond Simeroth, who would be 57 years old today. Simeroth was believed to be experiencing homelessness before his death; detectives said there was no suspicion of foul play. In December 2024, a fishing vessel with two people onboard was reported missing from San Pedro amid dangerous surf conditions. The two men didn't return after leaving on a small boat from Cabrillo Beach on Dec. 23. A search effort was initiated and on Dec. 25, their boat was found shipwrecked along the shore on the 1700 block of Paseo Del Mar. The next day, two partial sections of lower extremities were discovered on the shoreline. On June 18, 2025, police confirmed the remains belonged to Zhaoliang Tang, 62, one of the missing fishermen. Any remains associated with the second missing fisherman have not been found. Based on the evidence, detectives determined there was no reason to suspect foul play at this time. Police have notified the families of all three people following the confirmed DNA matches. 'The Palos Verdes Estates Police Department remains committed to thorough investigations that help bring answers and closure to families affected by tragedy,' said Chief Luke Hellinga. 'While the circumstances surrounding each case are heartbreaking, we hope that these identifications provide a measure of peace to the loved ones who have endured uncertainty and loss.' The recovered Bayesian superyacht completes its final journey to a Sicilian port

PORTICELLO, Italy (AP) — A British-flagged luxury superyacht that sank off Sicily last year, killing U.K. tech magnate Mike Lynch and six others, completed its final trip to the Sicilian port of Termini Imerese Sunday, a day after recovery crews finalized the complex operation to lift it out of the water. The white top and blue hull of the 56-meter (184-foot) Bayesian, covered with algae and mud, was kept elevated by the yellow floating crane barge off the port of Porticello, before being transferred to Termini Imerese, where it docked in the early afternoon. On Monday, the delicate recovery operation will be concluded, as the vessel will be transported to shore and settled in a specially built steel cradle. Then it will be made available for investigators for further examinations to help determine the cause of the sinking. The Bayesian sank Aug. 19 off Porticello, near Palermo, during a violent storm as Lynch was treating friends to a cruise to celebrate his acquittal two months earlier in the U.S. on fraud charges. Lynch, his daughter and five others died. Fifteen people survived, including the captain and all crew members except the chef. Italian authorities are conducting a full criminal investigation. The vessel was slowly raised from the seabed 50 meters (165 feet) deep over three days to allow the steel lifting straps, slings and harnesses to be secured under the keel. The Bayesian is missing its 72-meter (236-foot) mast, which was cut off and left on the seabed for future removal. The mast had to be detached to allow the hull to be brought to a nearly upright position that would allow the craft to be raised. British investigators said in an interim report issued last month that the yacht was knocked over by 'extreme wind' and couldn't recover. The report said the crew of the Bayesian had chosen the site where it sank as shelter from forecast thunderstorms. Wind speeds exceeded 70 knots (81 mph) at the time of the sinking and 'violently' knocked the vessel over to a 90-degree angle in under 15 seconds. Salvatore Cavalli, The Associated Press

Moment masked thieves steal pregnant Tamworth woman's car with her baby scans

A pregnant woman of 28 weeks says she fears for her family's safety after her Mini Cooper was stolen from her driveway in Tamworth. Shocking Ring doorbell footage, from the early hours of this morning, shows the moment a gang of masked thieves stole Laura Haynes' Mini from her home in Browns Lane. The devastated mum-to-be, who lives with her partner Paul, said all of her pregnancy notes, including baby scan photos, were in the car when it was driven away by the thugs in the dead of the night. The gadget, used by car thieves, mimics a key fob signal to unlock and start vehicles without needing the physical key. Laura said the incident had left her "scared" that the gang might return to the family's home again after what she said was now two failed attempts to take her partner's Mercedes. "We're scared they will come back for it because they tried to take Paul's Mercedes last night and it happened six months ago too," said the 27-year-old. The couple only realised the Mini had been taken when they woke up several hours later. Laura added: "I got up and when I looked out the window I noticed Paul's wing mirrors were out and then I thought, 'oh god, where is my car'. "We work hard for these things. That's £15,000 worth of car. "But it's the sentimental stuff. I'm 28 weeks pregnant and all my pregnancy notes were in my car. "Scan photos, things like that. I had a complicated pregnancy to start with so there's a scan before they were even a baby, when they were a dot; all that stuff is in there. "It's stuff I take around with me. I don't know if I can get any of that back from the hospital. I can't rewind my body to that time." Laura said forensic police were at the couple's home earlier today but that no arrests had been made that they were aware of. "We watched the doorbell footage and we could see them trying to get signal for the keys after walking up the drive, three or four of them," said Laura. "They opened the door of the Merc too but they couldn't get it started so they gave up on that. "They tried our front door and were looking through the kitchen window. The thought of someone trying to break in is so scary." We have contacted Staffordshire Police for comment. Anyone with information about this incident should contact the force by calling 101, quoting crime reference number 2125-0093-495 of June 22. You can also share information by emailing
