Gateshead Union Electric Steel to close with 180 jobs losses

A steel company has announced its only UK plant is to shut next year with the loss of about 180 jobs. Union Electric Steel blamed a lack of demand for UK-manufactured products, high energy costs and the ongoing effects of Brexit for its decision to axe the site in company's managing director Will Garrett said job losses were not "imminent", but some redundancies would be made before the closure in spring 2026. He said the firm would return to consultations with union representatives to discuss the "timing and phasing" of redundancies. The firm said it would fulfil existing order books until the plant ceases operations. Mr Garrett said: "We recognise the significance of this decision for our employees, their families and the local community. "It is with a heavy heart that we announce the closure of our Gateshead operations after over 180 years of manufacturing."I wish to personally thank every one of our dedicated employees for their hard work, commitment and understanding during this difficult period." The factory was originally home to the Davy Roll Company before it was acquired in 1999 by Union Electric Steel. Follow BBC North East on X, Facebook, Nextdoor and Instagram.

Police arrest two more children in manslaughter probe after boy, 14, dies in derelict warehouse fire - taking number of kids questioned to 26

Two more children have been arrested as part of a manslaughter probe into the death of a 14-year-old boy in a derelict warehouse fire. Layton Carr was found dead after emergency services rushed to the blaze at the building near the Fairfield Industrial estate in the Bill Quay area of Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, on May 2. Following the tragic discovery, officers arrested 13 boys and three girls, aged between 11 and 14, before holding five more youths aged between 11 and 13, all on suspicion of manslaughter. But Northumbria Police have now confirmed they have arrested two more girls, both aged 14, on top of a number of other arrests, whom officers did not specify the ages of. This brings the number of children arrested in relation to the tragedy to 26. Before the latest arrests, detectives leading the probe believed there were still people at the scene and urged anyone to come forward to help them with their enquiries. Since inquiries began, officers were handed footage relating to the incident. The horror discovery sparked a wave of grief, with the family paying tribute to Layton, from South Tyneside and a pupil at Hebburn Comprehensive School, in which they described him as 'a cheeky, happy lad'. They said: 'Layton was such a kind, caring and loving boy. From the minute he was born, it was obvious the character he would turn out to be. 'Layton was your typical 14-year-old lad, a cheeky, happy lad. Despite his cheeky side, Layton had an absolute heart of gold and would do anything for anyone. 'He was loved by all that met him, and it showed. He was a family boy who loved his mam and sisters more than anything in the world.' A GoFundMe appeal launched to support Layton's mother has raised more than £21,000. Det Chief Insp Atherton added: 'Thank you again to those of you who have got in touch, the information you provide is a crucial part of our investigation. 'We're currently working through the information and footage that has been submitted through the dedicated MIPP tile.' He urged people: 'If you think that you might have any information, including screenshots of social media content and video footage, that may assist our enquiries, it's not too late to submit it.' Members of the public are encouraged to provide information about Layton's death using the dedicated Major Incident Public Portal at Alternatively, they can contact Northumbria Police quoting reference number NP-20250502-1124. Information can also be given anonymously by calling the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Two more girls, 14, arrested after ‘cheeky, happy' boy died in tragic industrial park fire

TWO more schoolgirls have been questioned after a "cheeky and happy" 14-year-old boy died in a horror fire last month. Layton Carr's body was found after the blaze at an industrial park in Gateshead, Co Durham, on May 2. 7 7 7 More than two dozen children have been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter following the incident at Fairfield Industrial Estate in the Bill Quay area. A total of 26 kids, aged between 11 and 14, have been detained as part of the investigation before being bailed. The latest suspects questioned were two girls, both aged 14, Northumbria Police has confirmed. A force spokesperson told The Sun: "I can confirm a further two girls, both aged 14, have been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and have since been bailed." Layton was originally declared missing before cops confirmed he had perished in the fire. Layton's family previously paid tribute to him in a statement released by police. They said: "Layton was such a kind, caring and loving boy. "From the minute he was born it was obvious the character he would turn out to be. Layton was your typical 14-year-old lad, a cheeky, happy lad. "Despite his cheeky side Layton had an absolute heart of gold and would do anything for anyone. "He was loved by all that met him, and it showed. "He was a family boy that loved his mam and sisters more than anything in the world. 'Layton, we love you more than any words can ever explain. You will be missed more than you'll ever know. Our bright and beautiful boy.' They added: 'As a family we would like to say a massive thank you to all that helped in finding Layton. 'A massive thank you to the police and all services involved. "We're incredibly grateful for the work that you do every day to bring closure to families like ours.' Police have previously appealed for anyone who was at the industrial park on the night of the fire to get in touch. Detectives have also asked for anyone with video footage relating to the incident to share it with them. Detective Chief Inspector Louise Jenkins, said last month: 'Our thoughts remain with Layton's family at this devastating time. 'Our specialist officers will continue to support them in any way we can. We ask that their privacy be respected at this time. 'I would remind everyone not to speculate on details of the incident online or in the community – what might seem like a simple post on social media, could disrupt an on-going investigation. 'Circulation of malicious communications is classed as a criminal offence and those who choose to be involved could face prosecution. 'It's also important to note that anyone suspected of a crime must not be named publicly for legal reasons and those who are under 18 have anonymity. Thank you for your continued support and co-operation at this time.' Anyone with information in relation to what has happened, should speak to Northumbria Police directly by sending a direct message on social media, or by using the live chat or report forms on the Force's website. Those who can't contact the Force online, should call 101. Please quote reference number: NP-20250502-1124. 7 7 7 7
