Young people equipped with work skills
THE three-day Success Ladder Work Readiness Conference held at The Junction in Kloof recently was described by the 30 young delegates as a fun and interactive experience.
'The objective of the event was to equip people to get the job and keep the job,' said one of the organisers, Adele Benvie, who is also the CEO of the Success Company.
She said their Support Services Sector Action Team identified the pain point that candidates are well prepared for the role but don't know how to put their best foot forward when applying for a job or when in a job.

'This results in people not getting the job or keeping their jobs because they perhaps have the skill but are not 'showing up' in a way that shows employers they are a candidate of choice.
'Based on this, the Support Services team then created a work readiness event. The three-day conference was completed with gamification, music, activities, engagement as well as highly impactful and real life skills that prepared people for the workplace so that they can get the job and keep the job,' said Benvie.
The modules were presented by industry experts, bringing the latest relevant information to the session. On the third day there was a graduation ceremony where the participants were awarded certificates.
One of the attendees, Matthew Powell, said after experiencing the second day of the Success Ladder workshop he had already learnt a lot in a short period.
'From workplace mental health, different ways of communication, leadership and business skills, this is valuable information that has shifted my perspective on different ways of viewing conflicts and challenges and how I interact with them.'
He added that the information he received was valuable and that he would cherish it throughout his working career.
'I am blessed to have this opportunity at this time when I am kick-starting my career with this much of a mental head start,' he said.

Meta Platforms aims to allow brands to fully create and target advertisements with its artificial intelligence (AI) tools by the end of next year, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday, citing people familiar with the matter. The social media company's apps have 3.43-billion unique active users globally and its AI-driven tools help create personalised ad variations, image backgrounds and automated adjustments to video ads, making it lucrative for advertisers. A brand could provide a product image and a budget, and Meta's AI would generate the ad, including image, video and text, and then determine user targeting on Instagram and Facebook with budget suggestions, the report said. Meta also plans to let advertisers personalise ads using AI, so that users see different versions of the same ad in real time, based on factors such as geolocation, according to the report. The owner of Facebook and Instagram, whose majority of revenue comes from ad sales, did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

Minister appoints Ithuba Holdings to run national lottery for 12 months
Trade, Industry and Competition Minister Parks Tau has appointed Ithuba Holdings (RF) (Pty) Ltd as the temporary national lottery and sports pool operator for 12 months. This as the minister on Wednesday announced the successful conclusion and appointment of Sizekhaya Holdings (RF) (Pty) Ltd ('Sizekhaya') as the fourth national lottery and sports pools operator. However, Sizekhaya's appointment takes effect on June 1, 2026. 'Sizekhaya's appointment takes effect on June 1, 2026, and requires that there be transition from the third national lottery and sports pools operations to the fourth national lottery and sports pool licence operations. 'On advice of the National Lotteries Commission, I also authorised that a temporary licensee must be appointed in terms of section 13B of the Lotteries Act, 1997. 'I am pleased to report that I have concluded, on advice of the commission, successful negotiations with Ithuba Holdings (RF) (Pty) Ltd and have signed a temporary licence agreement for them to operate the National Lottery and Sports Pool for a period of 12 months with effect June 1, 2025,' said the minister in a statement on Saturday. The temporary licence will ensure the continuation of the lottery operations in the period the transition is required from the third to the fourth licence operations. In addition, the minister said he takes issue with the judgment of the High Court of May 21, which found that the Temporary Licence Request for Proposal (RFP) was not valid and has appealed this judgment. 'However, in its judgment of May 21, the court accepted that it is in the public interest that the National Lottery should continue to operate to raise revenues to fund worthy causes, notwithstanding that the court was not satisfied with the RFP process. Additionally, another court affirmed my power to appoint a temporary licensee in its judgment of May 30,' said Tau. It is in the context of both the May 21 and 30 judgments that the minister received and accepted the advice from the commission that he appoint a temporary licence operator on an urgent basis. Mixed news for petrol price change this week
South African finance minister Enoch Godongwana recently announced inflation-based tax hikes, which will see petrol and diesel increase to R4.01c/l and R3.85c/l, respectively, effective from 4 June 2025. As a result, fuel taxes will be going up 15 cents per litre for diesel and 16 cents per litre for petrol, but there will still be a slight decline at the petrol pumps this week. According to month-end data from the Central Energy Fund (CEF), the fuel price balance remains positive thanks to a stronger rand and lower international oil prices. Without adding in the tax increase, these are the following projections: Petrol 93: decrease of 20 cents per litre decrease of 20 cents per litre Petrol 95: decrease of 20 cents per litre decrease of 20 cents per litre Diesel 0.05% (wholesale): decrease of 52 cents per litre decrease of 52 cents per litre Diesel 0.005% (wholesale): decrease of 52 cents per litre However, when factoring in the coming fuel levy increases, this is effectively the current projected outcome: 93: decrease of 4 cents per litre decrease of 4 cents per litre 95: decrease of 4 cents per litre decrease of 4 cents per litre Diesel 0.05% (wholesale): decrease of 37 cents per litre decrease of 37 cents per litre Diesel 0.005% (wholesale): decrease of 37 cents per litre The final overall price changes for both petrol and diesel will be confirmed early this month with the new prices taking effect at midnight on Tuesday, 3 June 2025.
