Winger Reece relishes Super Rugby try-scoring record

eNCA24-05-2025

CHRISTCHURCH - Canterbury Crusaders winger Sevu Reece said he was delighted to break a "curse" and become Super Rugby's highest try-scorer, lifting his team atop the standings in the process.
The livewire Reece burrowed over from close range early in a tense 15-12 win over the Highlanders in Christchurch on Saturday.
It was his 66th try, all for the Crusaders and the most by any player in the 30-year history of the competition -- one more than former Hurricanes scrum-half TJ Perenara.
Reece, who has played 32 Tests for the All Blacks, said he had feared the record wouldn't come this year after enduring his longest career drought of six straight games without scoring.
He finally drew level with Perenara in last week's win over the New South Wales Waratahs before breaking the mark in front of his home supporters, giving him a tally of 66 tries from just 84 games.
"At the start of the season when no one was talking about it, I was scoring tries," Reece told Sky TV.
"But when everyone started to hype me, I couldn't score. The media would tell me: 'You've got one more to go'. Well that one more took me about seven weeks.
"It was like a curse there or something."
Reece said he expected his Fiji-based parents will have celebrated the record by drinking a bowl of kava -- a drink consumed socially in the Pacific Islands for its relaxing effects.
The 28-year-old conceded the crowd may not have been enthused by the nature of his try, which needed the video referee to confirm after he plunged over beneath a pile of bodies.
"I'd have loved to have scored a nice dive in the corner try, or something a bit nicer than that," he said.
"But a try's a try and what a place to do it -- here in front of my fans and family.
"Honestly. I can't thank my teammates enough and the boys that I've played with in the past."
Of the top-10 all-time try-scorers, only Moana Pasifika back Julian Savea is still active, on 63 tries.
Victory over the last-placed Highlanders has lifted the Crusaders to 45 points, two clear of the second-placed ACT Brumbies, who they play in next week's final round of the regular season.

Cape Town City complete the trio of PSL hopefuls with Orbit College and Casric Star in the way

BATTLE: Fortune Makaringe and Jaedin Rhodes may be down, but are far from out BATTLE: Fortune Makaringe and Jaedin Rhodes may be down, but are far from out as Cape Town City look ahead to the play-offs. BackpagePix Image: Backpagepix A place in next season's Betway Premiership will be up for grabs when the Premier Soccer League (PSL) promotional play-offs get underway next Wednesday. Orbit College will host Casric Stars in the opening clash at Olympia Stadium in Rustenburg (kick-off 3pm). The Rustenburg-based side finished second on the NFD Motsepe Foundation Championship table, just five points behind league winners Durban City, who secured automatic promotion after a stellar campaign. The college side's impressive run earned them a spot in the mini-league playoffs, which will see three teams battle it out for one remaining berth in South Africa's top-flight league. Completing the trio of hopefuls is Cape Town City, who finished second-last in the Betway Premiership and will now be fighting to retain their elite status. Video Player is loading. This marks Orbit College's maiden appearance in the promotion play-offs, a testament to the club's significant progress over the past year. From a ninth-place finish in the previous season, the team climbed into the top three, thanks to consistent performances and key tactical shifts under head coach Pogiso Makhoye. After weeks of uncertainty caused by an investigation into City's alleged use of an ineligible player, the confirmation of play-off dates has brought relief and focus for Makhoye and his charges. 'We were waiting for the date, and it has been confirmed, so we are ready to go,' Makhoye told Independent Newspapers. The coach is especially eager to see his side take on Casric Stars, a team that has had the upper hand in their recent matchups, but Makhoye is confident that past results will matter little in a high-pressure playoff scenario. 🚨 𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐅𝐈𝐑𝐌𝐄𝐃: 𝐔𝐩𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐏𝐒𝐋 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐲-𝐨𝐟𝐟 𝐟𝐢𝐱𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬 🚨 — Official PSL (@OfficialPSL) June 5, 2025 'In our preparations, we are putting everything into the first game, and we will only start thinking about the second match once we get what we want from the first one,' he said. 'It's a different game now. The playoffs are not the same as the regular league season. 'We've improved our preparations, we've identified our weaknesses, and we are going to take our chances. Maybe it's time to break that hoodoo. It would be great to do that in the playoffs.' Makhoye also addressed the looming challenge of facing a PSL side in Cape Town City. Although the Citizens come with top-tier experience, the coach believes that his side's presence in the playoffs proves they are no pushovers. 'We're not here by mistake,' he said. 'I think we deserve to be where we are. If we say we're ready for the PSL, we need to test ourselves against teams like Cape Town City.'

High-flying Zakithi Nene faces tough battle to become 400m king of Rome

Zakithi Nene, the fastest 400m runner in the world so far this year, lines up at the Rome Diamond League meet on Friday night against a field that boasts a combined 10 Olympic medals and 17 world championship gongs. Nene, the anchor of South Africa's golden 4x400m outfit at World Relays in China a month ago, this past weekend raced to victory in Nairobi in 43.76sec, a time that placed him atop the world list. This year the 27-year-old has burst out of his role as a solid member of the national relay squad and entrenched himself as a serious individual medal contender at the world championships in Tokyo in September. The Durban-based star is the form athlete going into Rome, looking to score the second Diamond League victory of his career against pedigreed competitors, topped by Olympic champion Quincy Hall of the US. Nene beat Hall for the first time at the Rabat Diamond League last month in a race he led from the start, only to tire on the home straight and get overhauled by American Jacory Patterson, the only other sub-44 athlete this year. But there are three athletes in the race who Nene has never beaten, starting with former Olympic and world champion Kirani James of Grenada.
