High-flying Zakithi Nene faces tough battle to become 400m king of Rome
Nene, the anchor of South Africa's golden 4x400m outfit at World Relays in China a month ago, this past weekend raced to victory in Nairobi in 43.76sec, a time that placed him atop the world list.
This year the 27-year-old has burst out of his role as a solid member of the national relay squad and entrenched himself as a serious individual medal contender at the world championships in Tokyo in September.
The Durban-based star is the form athlete going into Rome, looking to score the second Diamond League victory of his career against pedigreed competitors, topped by Olympic champion Quincy Hall of the US.
Nene beat Hall for the first time at the Rabat Diamond League last month in a race he led from the start, only to tire on the home straight and get overhauled by American Jacory Patterson, the only other sub-44 athlete this year.
But there are three athletes in the race who Nene has never beaten, starting with former Olympic and world champion Kirani James of Grenada.

Thursday's action In other events on Wednesday, Matt Sates and Olivia Nel were in action in individual heats. Sates finished 28th overall in the 200m individual medley in 2:01.80, while, after finishing sixth in her heat, Nel was 23rd overall in the 50m backstroke in 28.23 seconds, with neither making it through to the semifinals. Fresh from his gold medal in the 100m backstroke on Tuesday, Pieter Coetzé led off the South African 4x100m mixed medley relay team of Kaylene Corbett, Erin Gallagher and Matthew Caldwell. They finished eighth in their heat and 18th overall in 3:52.03 to also miss out on the final. Thursday's programme in Singapore will see Coetzé returning to the pool for the heats of the 200m backstroke – the event in which he claimed bronze at last year's world championships. Gallagher will line up in the 100m freestyle, while Corbett and Rebecca Meder will take on the 200m breaststroke. Olympic biathlon champion confirmed dead after Pakistan mountaineering accident

The dangerous nature of the site made rescue efforts "impossible", her agency said in a statement issued on Wednesday, which confirmed her death. "Rescue efforts to recover her failed and the operation was suspended," the statement continued. The accident happened around midday on Monday at an altitude of 5,700 metres (18,700 feet) on Laila Peak in the Karakoram range, according to a statement from her team on her official social media pages. Dahlmeier's climbing partner was able to sound the alarm after reaching safety. "It was determined that a helicopter rescue is not possible," Areeb Ahmed Mukhtar, a senior local official in Ghanche district, where the more than 6,000 metre mountain is located, told AFP earlier on Wednesday. "The conditions at the altitude where she was injured are extremely challenging," he added. Shipton Trek & Tours Pakistan, which organised the expedition, confirmed the ground rescue by a team of four that includes three Americans and a German mountaineer. Dahlmeier was "hit by falling rocks," her team said on Tuesday, adding no one had yet been able to reach her due to the danger of further rockfalls and the site's "remoteness". Muhammad Ali, a local disaster management official, told AFP that weather conditions have been "extremely harsh" in the region for the past week, with rain, strong winds and thick clouds. She won seven world championship gold medals, and at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang she became the first female biathlete to win both the sprint and the pursuit at the same Games. Dahlmeier retired from professional competition in 2019 at the age of 25. She went on to become a commentator on biathlon events for German broadcaster ZDF, and also took up mountaineering.
