Tunisian Ultras Join Convoy to Break Israeli Siege on Gaza

Morocco World07-06-2025
Rabat– Tunisian football ultras are taking part in a grassroots effort to confront and break the genocidal siege Israel continues to impose on Gaza. Several major supporter groups have declared their participation in the 'Resilience Convoy,' which is set to depart Tunisia on Monday, June 9, with plans to reach Gaza through Libya and Egypt.
The convoy is being organized by the Coordination for Joint Action for Palestine, and has already received over 7,000 applications. Volunteers are being screened based on age, health, and logistical feasibility.
Among the first to respond were the Bad Blue Boys Juniors, supporters of Espérance Sportive de Tunis (ES Tunis), and the Leaders Clubistes, affiliated with Club Africain.
Both groups issued calls to action urging fans and citizens alike to take part in the convoy, framing it as a moral and political duty rooted in a long-standing tradition of Tunisian ultras using football spaces to express solidarity with Palestine.
'When the world falls silent, the crowds must scream,' declared Leaders Clubistes, affirming that solidarity with the Palestinian struggle remains a core part of their identity.
Support has also come from Libya. The Teha Boys, ultras of Al-Ahly Tripoli, joined the initiative in a joint statement with their Tunisian counterparts. Major Tunisian unions—representing workers, farmers, doctors, and supporters—have also declared their backing for the convoy, now rallying under the revolutionary slogan: 'The Shackle Must Be Broken.'
Despite clear threats from the Israeli regime, organizers are determined to proceed. 'We don't believe in the impossible,' said convoy spokesperson Wael Naouar.

The convoy was originally scheduled to depart on June 15, but the date was moved forward to align with international resistance efforts, including the Freedom Flotilla, which is currently close to Gaza.
Onboard the Madleen—named after Madleen Kulab, Gaza's only fisherwoman—are prominent activists including Greta Thunberg, actor Liam Cunningham, European Parliament member Rima Hassan, and Palestinian-American human rights attorney Huwaida Arraf.
Organizers from both the land and sea missions have expressed concern over likely attacks by the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF), especially after Israel launched drone strikes in May against the Conscience, a Flotilla vessel in international waters near Malta.
The siege of Gaza did not begin on October 7. It is the latest phase in a long-term genocidal campaign. Since 2007, Israel has imposed a total blockade on Gaza—by land, air, and sea—trapping over two million Palestinians in an open-air prison and cutting them off from basic survival needs. Every attempt to break the siege has been either violently intercepted or blocked outright.
One of the most notorious attacks occurred in May 2010, when Israeli commandos stormed the Mavi Marmara, a Turkish aid ship in international waters, murdering ten activists. Israel later justified the killings under the familiar lie of 'self-defense,' claiming that their heavily armed soldiers were endangered by civilians on board.
Now, in the midst of a near-total blockade and constant bombing, Israel has intensified its genocide on Gaza's civilian population. Gaza has been plunged into starvation, displacement, and unrelenting bombardment for almost 100 consecutive days.
The genocidal hands feeding Gaza
After banning the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA)—the only large-scale humanitarian body with long-standing infrastructure in Gaza—Israel replaced it with the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), a US-backed private entity with no credible record of neutrality, capacity, or trust among Palestinians.
Since GHF began operating distribution centers in late May, the IOF has killed more than 100 civilians near these 'aid' sites. Palestinians have come to see them not as relief hubs but as lethal ambush zones, where desperate people are gunned down.
Speaking to Al Jazeera on the first day of Eid al-Adha in Gaza, June 6, as GHF sites closed , journalist and Khan Younis resident Ahmad al-Najjar stated that these centers 'have killed more people than they've helped. It's comical to say these distribution centers are closed today, as if they've been making a major difference.'
In reality, GHF centers have become symbolic of the broader Israeli policy— use starvation as a weapon of war, crush any mechanism of organized relief, and kill those who dare to seek aid.
As Gaza remains under genocidal siege, initiatives like the Resilience Convoy are both a humanitarian act and a political stance—one that refuses silence, complicity, or fear.

Trump Administration to Require ‘Good Moral Character' as New Criteria for Citizenship

Rabat – The US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has expanded its criteria for determining 'good moral character' in naturalization applications, deepening scrutiny on lawful behavior and positive societal contributions. Announced in a USCIS memo on Friday, the new policy requires officers to take what they call a 'holistic approach' in evaluating applicants' fitness for citizenship. This includes not only the absence of criminal conduct but also active indicators of community involvement, tax compliance, stable employment, and family ties in the US. The Trump administration's updated framework allows officers to consider 'any other acts' that deviate from what is expected of an average American citizen—even if those acts are technically legal. This marks a significant shift from previous guidelines that focused largely on criminal offenses and conditional legal disqualifiers such as multiple DUI convictions. Applicants must now show their character is 'commensurate with the standards of average citizens' in their local community. USCIS claims the goal is to reward applicants' 'positive attributes,' but immigration advocates warn it could be used to target dissent or discriminate against culturally specific behaviors. Critics argue the move opens the door to political subjectivity in naturalization decisions. Stanford University's student newspaper and the American Association of University Professors have filed lawsuits accusing the administration of targeting non-citizens who express pro-Palestinian views. 'This could increase denials by torturing the definition of good moral character to encompass extremely harmless behavior,' Doug Rand, a former USCIS official under the Biden administration, told the press . USCIS has also hinted that naturalized citizens, including high-profile figures like Elon Musk or NYC mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, could face denaturalization proceedings under the expanded interpretation of eligibility violations. Naturalization applicants, primarily green card holders with at least 3 to 5 years of US residency, must pass English and civics exams alongside moral character evaluations. This is no simple task as naturalized citizens make up over half of America's foreign-born population, wit between 600,000 and 1 million immigrants become US citizens each year. The new policy could significantly alter the path to citizenship for thousands, particularly as stringent and often scrutinized immigration enforcement remains a central theme in Trump's campaign strategy.

Hamas Approves Ceasefire Proposal as Pressure Mounts on Israel

Rabat – Hamas announced on Monday that it has told mediators it accepts a new ceasefire proposal for Gaza, which would include a 60-day truce. The deal was put forward by Qatar and Egypt. Al Jazeera quoted a source familiar with the talks as saying that the plan would pause 'military operations' for two months. During that time, Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) would pull back to allow more humanitarian aid into Gaza and negotiations are expected to take place to push forward a permanent ceasefire. Half of the 50 remaining Israeli hostages would also be exchanged for Palestinian prisoners. The source said the deal 'marks the beginning of the path to a comprehensive solution.' Israel has not yet given an official response. Some top officials dismissed Hamas' move, saying it only agreed because of Israel's planned illegal invasion of Gaza City. Defense Minister Israel Katz claimed Hamas was acting 'out of fear.' Far-right ministers Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich strongly opposed the plan. Ben-Gvir said the 'war' must continue, while Smotrich argued Israel should not 'grant the enemy a lifeline.' A 'regional source involved in the Gaza talks' told CNN that Hamas 'insists' on 'written American guarantees' for a permanent ceasefire after the 60 days. Protests in Israel Meanwhile, pressure on the government is mounting inside Israel. Protesters blocked the Ayalon Highway in Tel Aviv on Monday night to demand the release of hostages and a ceasefire in Gaza. Activists carried banners reading: 'Occupying Gaza means sacrificing the abductees and soldiers.' Haaretz reported that the protest lasted merely 15 minutes before police cracked down and cleared the road. Seven people and a Haaretz photographer were threatened with fines for traffic violations. Relatives of freed hostages also joined the protest, briefly blocking traffic while calling for a deal to free those still held in Gaza. 'Their time is running out. A deal is on the table,' protesters chanted. Others shouted, 'Enough killing, enough bereavement, hostages above all.' The protest came just a day after a similar massive Israeli protest in Tel Aviv organized by the Hostages and Missing Families Forum , in which 500,000 flocked to the streets and gathered outside of politicians' homes as well as IOF headquarters. Meanwhile, in the United States, a new government decision has sparked outrage – the State Department has suspended all visitor visas for Palestinians from Gaza. Rights groups condemned the move, saying it will gravely hurt children who need urgent medical care in the US. HEAL Palestine, a US-based charity, said the suspension will block 'severely injured children' from receiving life-saving treatment that is not available in Gaza as the genocide rages on.
