Five men detained in Shah Alam for alleged diesel fraud, over 7,000 litres seized in KPDN raid
SHAH ALAM, May 29 — The Selangor branch of the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) detained five men suspected of diesel fraud using subsidised fleet cards yesterday.
KPDN state director Mohd Zuhairi Mat Radey said the suspects, aged between 30 and 45, were arrested during a raid on an illegal storage site in Sri Muda, Section 25.
The operation, involving 25 KPDN officers and the Selangor Police Contingent headquarters, took place around 7 pm following a month-long intelligence gathering.
'We seized a 30-ton tanker truck, four canvas trucks, two bonded trucks each carrying intermediate bulk containers (IBC), a van and a modified prime mover,' he told reporters after the operation concluded late last night.
Mohd Zuhairi added that over 7,000 liters of diesel were recovered from 14 IBC tanks with 1,000-litre capacity each, along with equipment such as motorised pumps and connecting hoses believed to be used for illegal extraction and transfer of diesel.
He said the premises lacked a valid license to store subsidised diesel, while the detained bonded truck drivers also did not possess legal documentation to hold the controlled item.
'The modus operandi involved bonded truck drivers using fleet cards to purchase subsidised diesel at petrol stations around Shah Alam,' he explained.
The case is being investigated under the Control of Supplies Act 1961, focusing on identifying individuals, companies and distribution networks involved in the illegal diesel supply chain. — Bernama

MERSING, June 3 — What was meant to be a joyful holiday back in their hometown ended in tragedy when two siblings drowned while swimming at the Pulau Mentigi beach here yesterday afternoon. Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Mersing Zone director Maritime Commander Suhaizan Saadin said the deceased were Nur Awatif Udaima Mohd Hisam, 15, and her younger brother Ahmad Uwais Al Qarni, 13. He said the Malaysia Rescue Sub Centre (MRSC) Johor alerted them at 4.25pm to activate a search and rescue (SAR) operation, after which MMEA's patrol boat Perkasa 44 was deployed to the scene. 'According to the information received, the first victim, Nur Awatif Udaima, was found at the location where she drowned by the local community at 4.30pm. 'The Perkasa 44 boat and the islanders then expanded the search sector, and Ahmad Uwais Al Qarni was found through diving efforts by island residents at 6.30pm,' he said in a statement last night. Suhaizan said it is understood that the victims' family had returned to their village at Pulau Tinggi for the school holidays, and the family had gone to the beach, about 19 nautical miles from the Mersing coastline, for an outing. He added that the bodies were handed over to the Marine Police Force (PPM) and brought back to the Shahbandar Jetty. Meanwhile, Mersing District Police Chief Supt Abdul Razak Abdullah Sani said that the bodies of the siblings were sent to Mersing Hospital for post-mortem. — Bernama

Eighty-year-old retired policeman crashes car into Melaka eatery, hospitalised
ALOR GAJAH, June 3 — A retired policeman sustained minor head injuries after losing control of the car he was driving and crashing into a roadside eatery at Jalan Pantai Belimbing, Durian Tunggal, here yesterday. Alor Gajah district police chief Supt Ashari Abu Samah said the victim, Md Nor Md Shah, 80, suffered swelling on his head due to the accident, while part of the eatery's front porch collapsed in the 2.55pm incident. 'Investigations found that the senior citizen was travelling from Pulau Sebang to Taman Melaka Perdana when he reportedly lost control of the vehicle and veered off the road. 'Fortunately, no customers were at the eatery at the time of the incident. The victim was taken to Alor Gajah Hospital for treatment,' he said in a statement yesterday. — Bernama

Ahmad Zahid, Steve Reed discuss disaster management and climate change issues
LONDON: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi met with United Kingdom Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Steve Reed on Monday, during which they discussed bilateral cooperation between Malaysia and the UK. Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Rural and Regional Development Minister, said the meeting covered topics including disaster management, clean water, and the need for new technology to enhance the country's preparedness against global climate change. 'We know these issues directly impact human life, so comprehensive approaches must be taken to address how global warming and climate change affect people. 'While river pollution is a thing of the past here in the UK, it remains a problem in our country. Public awareness about this issue must be increased,' he told reporters after the dinner with Malaysian students sponsored by Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) in the UK. Also present were MARA chairman Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, 60 MARA-sponsored students, and 40 other guests. During the meeting, both leaders also discussed cooperation in the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programme and the global halal industry. 'I believe this meeting opens new avenues to elevate Malaysia-UK cooperation to a more strategic level, particularly in building an inclusive, sustainable, and resilient future,' he said.
