Govt plans language and etiquette training for taxi drivers ahead of VM2026
Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook emphasised that taxi drivers play a crucial role as the first point of contact for visitors, shaping their initial impression of the country.
Loke stated, 'The taxi industry is more than just transportation, but represents the heartbeat of public service and serves as the first impression of the country for tourists.
' The initiative is part of broader efforts to improve public transport quality ahead of the anticipated tourism surge in 2026.
Additionally, the government has increased the Social Security Organisation (Perkeso) contribution incentive from 10 per cent to 30 per cent to better protect the welfare of taxi drivers.
Loke highlighted ongoing reforms, saying, 'These reforms are ongoing, and I will continue to work with this industry to strengthen the public transport sector for the benefit of the people.'
During the third annual general meeting of the Malaysia Taxi, Rental Car, Limousine and Airport Taxi Association (GTSM), Loke engaged with industry representatives to gather feedback. He stressed that meaningful improvements require collaboration with key stakeholders. - Bernama

No more approvals for special number plates, says Transport Ministry
KUALA LUMPUR: The Transport Ministry will no longer grant approvals for the issuance and sale of special registration number plates intended to benefit any company, individual, or non-governmental organisation (NGO). Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Hasbi Habibollah said the decision was made based on a Cabinet directive from 2022. 'The current policy criteria of the ministry, which is to cease (issuing or authorising) the sale of special plates to NGOs or companies, remains as decided by the Cabinet on Aug 17, 2022. 'This includes business purposes intended to generate profit for any party involved,' he said during Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat on Monday (Aug 4). Rushdan Rusmi (PN-Padang Besar) had sought clarification on the guidelines and criteria used by the Road Transport Department (JPJ) in approving special plate series. On the revenue generated from the sale of special registration numbers, Hasbi said a total of RM110,069,150 has been collected since the initiative was introduced in 2023. 'Revenue from these numbers is now collected via the JPJeBid platform, and the proceeds are channelled into the Federal Consolidated Fund under the Federal Government. 'A portion of the revenue is then allocated to people-centric programmes,' he said. To a supplementary question from Datuk Mohd Isam Mohd Isa (BN-Tampin) on issues surrounding JPJeBid, Hasbi acknowledged that the ministry had resolved many of the technical glitches in the bidding system. However, he admitted that minor technical shortcomings persisted. 'To be fair... there were many problems during the early stages, such as login difficulties and bidders being cut off at the last minute. 'But those problems have mostly been resolved. While some issues remain, they are no longer as widespread as they once were,' he said.

RM110mil collected from special plate sales since 2023, says deputy minister
KUALA LUMPUR: A total of RM110,069,150 has been collected from the sale of special vehicle registration plate series since the initiative was introduced in 2023, the Dewan Rakyat was told today. Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Hasbi Habibollah said part of the revenue has been allocated to people-centric programmes. "A portion of these funds supports initiatives such as the free driving licence, free helmet exchange programme, FlySiswa, free contribution under the self-employment social security scheme and road safety promotion enhancement programmes," he said. He was responding to Rushdan Rusmi (PN–Padang Besar), who had asked about the revenue generated from special plate sales over the past years. In reply to the original question on the guidelines used by the Road Transport Department in approving special registration series, including those issued by government agencies, NGOs, or private companies, Hasbi said the Transport Ministry's policy of halting such approvals remains in force. He said the Cabinet had decided on Aug 17, 2022, to stop issuing or approving special number plates for NGOs, corporate entities or commercial profit. "Instead, the ministry's special vehicle registration numbers are now available via the Road Transport Department eBid system, with all revenue channelled into the Federal Consolidated Fund under the Federal Government," he said. On the VIP series registration plates offered earlier this year to mark the Silver Jubilee of the Raja of Perlis and Visit Perlis Year 2024, Hasbi said the move was made following a Cabinet decision on March 26. He said such special plate series are only considered in conjunction with important national events, provided the prefix on the number plate reflects the event. "Following a cabinet meeting on March 26, the cabinet agreed for the Transport Ministry to issue the VIP series of special registration numbers in conjunction with the Silver Jubilee celebration of the Raja of Perlis. "The ministry is following the Cabinet's directive," he said.

Bold rail initiative to reduce road congestion
PETALING JAYA: Transport Minister Anthony Loke has reaffirmed the government's pledge to shift the country's freight and passenger movement from road to rail – a strategic move under the Road to Rail initiative outlined in the 13MP. In a video shared on his official Facebook page, Loke said the government is prioritising the development of rail infrastructure to reduce heavy reliance on lorries for cargo transport, particularly between industrial zones and ports. 'When cargo volumes increase, lorry traffic also increases on the road, causing congestion and raising the risk of accidents. The solution is to transport cargo via train directly from factories to ports.' Loke said the government will invest in both new railway lines and rolling stock, with over 200 new train sets to be procured under the 13MP, as announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. 'The new trains will enhance services for both commuters and cargo operators.' Among the reforms is a new leasing model for acquiring trains – a mechanism designed to speed up procurement without requiring full upfront payment. 'The model includes long-term maintenance in the package, which helps address long-standing issues involving spare parts and servicing delays. 'In the past, when components failed, we had trouble replacing them. We'd end up cannibalising parts from other trains. With leasing, maintenance is assured.' Loke also outlined plans to strengthen the domestic rail manufacturing industry. The existing train assembly plant in Batu Gajah, Perak, will be developed into a national rail production hub. He said this would open up new opportunities for local industry players and generate high-skilled employment. 'Just like expanding a food stall into a restaurant, this is how we plan to grow the country's transport capacity and economic competitiveness.' Loke also assured that existing public transport support programmes – including the My50 unlimited travel pass, free stage bus services and flight subsidies for students travelling between Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia – will continue.
