In a sharp rebuke to Congress MP and Lok Sabha LoP Rahul Gandhi Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on Sunday said he must either file an affidavit substantiating his allegations against the Election Commission or apologise before the country, warning that failure to provide a declaration under oath within seven days would render his claims 'baseless and invalid.'The CEC questioned whether the Commission could act on the basis of complaints without proper legal backing.'Should EC issue notice to 1.5 lakh voters without declaration under oath by the complainant?' he asked.Responding to allegations that the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in Bihar was being carried out in undue haste, Kumar pointed to the statutory mandate of the Election Commission under the Representation of the People Act 'Some people are misleading that why the SIR exercise is being carried out in such a hurry? Should the voter list be rectified before or after the elections? The Election Commission is not saying this; the Representation of the People Act says that you have to rectify the voter list before every election. This is the legal responsibility of the Election Commission,' he said.Kumar further defended the Commission's timeline, stating that the work had begun well in advance.'Then the question arose whether the Election Committee would be able to reach more than seven crore voters of Bihar? The truth is that the work started on 24th June. The entire process was completed by about the 20th of July...'In response, the Congress came out strongly in defence of its leader. 'Rahul Gandhi only stated facts revealed by EC's own data,' the party said, dismissing the Commission's warning.Senior party leader Jairam Ramesh asked, 'Will EC implement, in letter and spirit, Supreme Court's August 14 orders on Bihar SIR process?'Rahul Gandhi on Sunday morning began his 16-day-long 'Voter Adhikar Yatra' from Sasaram in poll-bound Bihar. The yatra, which started around three hours ago, will cover over 1,300 kilometres across more than 20 districts before culminating with a mega rally in Patna on September 1, where leaders of various INDIA bloc parties are expected to join him.Sharing details on X before setting out, Gandhi wrote: '16 days. 20+ districts. 1,300+ kms. We are coming among the people with the Voter Rights Yatra. This is the fight to protect the most fundamental democratic right — 'one person, one vote.' Join us in Bihar to save the Constitution.'Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera hailed the march as another milestone in India's democratic journey. 'Whenever Rahul Gandhi has embarked upon such a march, democracy has turned a new page,' he told reporters, describing the yatra as 'a historic journey, which will prove to be a milestone in the fight for the existence of all of us.'Khera also said leaders from across the INDIA bloc, including Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Tejashwi Yadav, would join the march at different points. He alleged that the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls had 'exposed the BJP's designs to disenfranchise lakhs of voters belonging to the Dalit, Adivasi and minority communities, the poor and daily wagers.'He went on to call it 'a conspiracy to not only steal the votes, but also steal the identity,' warning that 'today they will snatch the underprivileged people's right to vote, tomorrow they will refuse them the share in government schemes like free food and housing.'Training his guns on the Election Commission, Khera said the body was becoming 'like one of the train bogeys of the so-called double engine,' a reference to the BJP governments at the Centre and in the states. 'The Election Commission becoming just a compartment of this 'double engine' — this is something we will not accept. We are fighting against this and will continue to do so in the future,' he asserted.Khera further claimed that the yatra was born out of popular anger against the revision of electoral rolls in Bihar. 'After the people of Bihar, activists, and the Congress and INDIA bloc workers raised their voice against the SIR, the EC was forced to do a course correction. It was only after the intervention by the Supreme Court that the national poll body was compelled to address the concerns of common people and voters,' he said.According to him, the 'Voter Adhikar Yatra' is intended to spread awareness among the masses 'so that the Modi government's conspiracy to deny voting rights to the people of Bihar does not fructify.'

After CSDS psephologist deletes X post, BJP accuses Congress of making 'baseless claims' on voter fraud

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday (August 19, 2025) accused the Congress of making 'baseless' claims about 'vote theft' and targeting the Election Commission of India in 'collusion' with a Delhi-based think tank. This came after Sanjay Kumar, a psephologist and a professor with the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS), who had shared voter data from two Maharashtra Assembly seats related to last year's State election in a post on X on Sunday (August 17, 2025), subsequently deleted his post on Tuesday (August 19, 2025), apologising for posting erroneous data. The post had claimed a significant decrease in voter numbers in two Assembly seats in the State election compared to the 2024 general election, which was held nearly six months earlier. 'Fake data' Reacting sharply, BJP national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia lashed out at Mr. Kumar for posting 'false data' which he claimed was used by the Opposition to target the EC, calling it a 'dangerous game'. 'This survey organisation [CSDS] is nothing but a puppet at the hands of leaders like Rahul Gandhi who could not win people's trust. He needs such an organisation which can provide fake data and facts so that he can make baseless allegations,' Mr. Bhatia said. 'Congress leader Pawan Khera tweets on this and then deletes. Rahul Gandhi's baseless allegations are also based on CSDS data,' he added. Deleting his post on Tuesday (August 19, 2025), Mr. Kumar wrote on X, 'I sincerely apologise for the tweets posted regarding Maharashtra elections. An error occurred while comparing the data of 2024 LS and 2024 AS. The data in the row was misread by our Data team.' The erroneous tweet has since been removed, he said, adding, 'I had no intention of dispersing any form of misinformation.'

We are not against an individual: Congress MP Mallu Ravi on VP elections

New Delhi [India], August 19 (ANI): Congress MP Mallu Ravi on Tuesday said that the opposition parties were not against Maharashtra Governor and NDA Vice Presidential candidate CP Radhakrishnan as an individual, since it is a battle of ideology. 'We are not against CP Radhakrishnan, there are two ideals seen in India, one is secular ideology – Congress and UPA; non-secular ideology is NDA. That is why we are not against an individual; this is the battle of ideology," Ravi told ANI. He appealed to all the regional parties, including the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and YSRCP, to support the candidature of Sudershan Reddy. 'We just wanted to start meeting individually and collectively. Through you, we are requesting all the TDP, YSRCP and even from Punjab and Bihar to support the candidature of B Sudershan Reddy," Ravi said. 'We, the MPs of Telangana, are extremely happy that B Sudershan Reddy has been announced for the Vice President post by the INDIA bloc. There is every possibility that he may be elected as the Vice President of India, though apparently the number is short. In the Constitution Club elections, the NDA wanted to elect one person, and the person who was not to be elected has been elected with the support of Congress," he on Tuesday expressed gratitude towards the INDIA bloc for nominating him as the joint Opposition candidate for the Vice Presidential election and appealed to all Members of Parliament to support his candidature.'Thank you for projecting me as a candidate on behalf of the INDIA Alliance. But for (sic) you, it would not have been possible…As a candidate, I would humbly request and appeal to all the Parliamentarians to support my candidature," Reddy told reporters here.'I am very, very happy. Thank you," he added. When asked about him and his competition being from southern India, Reddy said that 'south, north, east, west" doesn't matter since both – him and Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan – were Indian nationals. 'It is the Parliamentarians who elect the Vice President. Political parties may sponsor the candidates. There is only one citizenship in this country. CP Radhakrishnan and I are Indian nationals. Whether it is South, North, East, or West, nothing matters," Reddy said. The retired judge, who arrived in Delhi earlier in the day, was welcomed by the INDIA bloc INDIA bloc announced retired Supreme Court judge B Sudershan Reddy as its Vice Presidential candidate earlier in the day, terming the election an 'ideological fight" against the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The opposition leaders said their choice of candidate is meant to defend constitutional announcement also received backing from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).Earlier in the day, Kharge said Reddy would file his nomination on August who served as Chief Justice of the Guwahati High Court before being elevated to the Supreme Court in 2007, retired in July 2011. He will contest against the NDA nominee CP Vice-Presidential election is scheduled for September 9, with counting on the same day. (ANI)
