The SEC's much-repeated slogan, 'It just means more,' couldn't ring truer these days.
The arrival of Texas and Oklahoma, blended with the it-only-goes-up ethos of NIL, has turned the SEC from a juggernaut into whatever is directly above a juggernaut.
Now 16 teams deep and boasting five of the top-10 favorites to win the National Championship, the SEC is a league of its own.
It's also wide open.
Gone are the days of flipping a coin between Alabama and either LSU or Georgia.
Overnight, the SEC has morphed from one of the dullest conferences to arguably the most electric.
It just means more.

The Favorites
Texas checks into the new season as the favorite to win both the SEC and the College Football Playoff. It's not surprising, given their terrific 2024 campaign and the hype surrounding Arch Manning, but these prices are out of hand.
Texas is extremely talented, Manning could be generational, and Steve Sarkisian had them knocking on the door of both an SEC and a National Championship in 2024.
Still, in this new era of college football, it may not be enough just being one of the best on-paper teams in the country. And that's assuming the Longhorns tick that box, which is not a given.
The teams at the top, especially in the SEC, are just way too good these days to play such a short favorite.
You can apply similar logic to Georgia, though the Bulldogs are not receiving the same kind of hype as Texas coming into the new season.

Betting on College Football?
Instead, Georgia feels like the 'safe' option compared to Texas, but I think both teams have too many holes to be interesting at these prices.
Alabama is the one favorite that I have interest in backing, but I'd rather bet the Crimson Tide to win the National Championship at 10/1 than the SEC at half the price.
If you're a believer in Kalen DeBoer, which I am, you have few reasons to doubt the Tide coming into 2025.
ESPN's Bill Connelly, the inventor of SP+, has 'Bama ranked as the best team in the SEC and No. 2 in the country behind Ohio State, but the betting market and public perception are down on the Tide because of their inconsistent performance in Year 1 under deBoer.
Buying low on Alabama is never a bad idea.
The Dark Horses
There are going to be plenty of people backing LSU at +700 just because Garrett Nussmeier has the potential to be the best quarterback in the country, but that number seems a little short considering the questions that will be asked of this team.
LSU's defense improved in Blake Baker's first year as defensive coordinator, but it still needs to get better to challenge Alabama, Georgia, and Texas.
The Bayou Bengals also have a brutal start to their schedule with a trip to Clemson in their opener and then dates with Florida, Ole Miss, and South Carolina before Columbus Day.
If you are keen on backing the Tigers, you can probably wait and see if you can buy low after a loss.

Perhaps no team is getting more sleeper hype in the SEC than Florida in 2025, but I just don't see it in the context of challenging for a championship.
They're talented, they have an outstanding quarterback, and they finished 2024 bouncing, but the schedule is just dementedly tough.
Only Oklahoma has a harder projected schedule in the entire country.
Florida is the better team than South Carolina on paper, but I'd rather bet the Gamecocks, who are as high as 35/1 in the market, than the Gators.
South Carolina's schedule closes out with a gauntlet, but it's manageable out of the gates with Virginia Tech, South Carolina State, Vanderbilt, Missouri (away), and Kentucky before a trip to Baton Rouge on Oct. 11.
There's a good chance the Gamecocks are going into Death Valley with an unblemished record against an LSU team that could be licking its wounds.
Auburn, too, could be lying in the weeds if Hugh Freeze gets it right with his quarterback.
The Tigers were unfortunate in just about every way in 2024, and they had a young roster that should get better, but it could also completely fall apart if former blue-chip recruit Jackson Arnold continues to be inconsistent under center.
3 Sam Pittman and the Razorbacks could be boom or bust in 2025.

The Long Shots
Vanderbilt was a darling in 2025 after upsetting Alabama and going to a bowl game, but they're still this far down the board for good reason.
Clark Lea has this program trending up, and there will be some great opportunities to back Diego Pavia and the Commodores to pull some more stunners this season, but the futures market is uninteresting for this group.
I also think there will be a lot of strong buying opportunities on Mississippi State in Year 2 under Jeff Lebby, but the Bulldogs still have a lot of work to do to climb the ladder.
The one long shot I could make a slight argument for at their high-water mark price of 200/1 is Arkansas.
According to SP+, the Pigs have a 1.4 percent chance (roughly 70/1) to win the SEC in 2025, so there's a smidge of value there if you're feeling frisky.
Sam Pittman has been in charge of this program for six years, and he's essentially traded good and bad seasons since taking over in Fayetteville.
There's a chance this is one of the good varieties thanks to a new-look receiving corps for talented quarterback Taylen Green.
The Hogs will play one of the toughest schedules in the country, but the ceiling with this team is high enough to have a small punt at 200/1.
Best bets in the SEC
Alabama to win the National Championship (10/1, bet365)
South Carolina to win the SEC (35/1, FanDuel)
Arkansas to win the SEC (200/1, FanDuel)
Texas to miss the CFB Playoff (+235, FanDuel)

College Football Playoff to tweak the way it evaluates teams during the 2025 season

The College Football Playoff says it's making some changes to the way it evaluates teams during the 2025 college football season. The playoff announced Wednesday that it was making 'enhancements to the tools that the selection committee uses to assess schedule strength and how teams perform against their schedule. The changes come after 9-3 Alabama was the first team left out of the playoff and ended the season ranked ahead of 10-2 Miami. 'The current schedule strength metric has been adjusted to apply greater weight to games against strong opponents,' the playoff's release said. 'An additional metric, record strength, has been added to the selection committee's analysis to go beyond a team's schedule strength to assess how a team performed against that schedule. This metric rewards teams defeating high-quality opponents while minimizing the penalty for losing to such a team. Conversely, these changes will provide minimal reward for defeating a lower-quality opponent while imposing a greater penalty for losing to such a team.' Based on the paragraph above, we're not sure if the playoff committee would have changed the way it ranked anyone in the top 15 a year ago. Though the Crimson Tide beat Georgia, Missouri and LSU, two of its losses were to teams that finished the regular season at 6-6. Alabama's third loss came by 21 points to Oklahoma in the penultimate week of the season. Miami, meanwhile, lost on the road to a 7-5 Georgia Tech team and a 9-3 Syracuse team. The Hurricanes didn't have any wins over teams who were ranked at the time of those games, though Louisville and Duke finished the season at 9-4. The CFP also said that it wouldn't make a rule prohibiting teams' rankings from changing ahead of the final set of rankings if those teams are not playing on conference championship weekend. 'The selection committee reaffirmed that movement in the final week should be evidence-based and did not recommend creating a formal policy prohibiting such movement,' the playoff said. The first set of playoff rankings will be released on Tuesday, Nov. 4 and there will be five sets of rankings before the final rankings that set the playoff field will be released on Sunday, Dec. 7. The top four teams in the 12-team playoff will again get byes this season, though the top four teams will be the top four teams in the rankings, and not the four highest-ranked conference champions.

Bobby Witt Jr. hits 100th homer, joining some select company in MLB history

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Bobby Witt Jr. knew the ball was gone the moment it left his bat. Only later did the young Kansas City Royals star realize what kind of company it allowed him to join. The two-run shot in the eighth inning against Texas merely padded the lead for Kansas City, which went on to a 5-2 victory. It was the fifth straight win for the Royals, who closed to within 2 1/2 games of an AL wild-card berth. But it also was the 100th career homer for Witt, making him the youngest in franchise history to reach that mark. He made it at the age of 25 years, 66 days, faster than Carlos Beltran when he accomplished it during the 2003 season. 'I want him up there every inning,' Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. 'I mean, you look at the lineup and you're trying to figure out, 'How many times can we get to the plate? How many guys can we keep on base for him when he does come to the plate?' 'I mean, that's an immense amount of pressure on a younger player to understand that's how everybody feels about him,' Quatraro said. 'But he has the physical ability, the makeup and the mental capacity to handle it.' The latest no-doubt shot, which came off Texas reliever Cole Winn and landed an estimated 449 feet to dead center field, made Witt only the fourth player with at least 100 homers and 100 stolen bases through his first four big league seasons. The others are Julio Rodríguez, Darryl Strawberry and Bobby Bonds — some pretty select company. Witt also become one of six shortstops in the last 95 years to hit at least 100 homers through his age-25 seasons. That list of luminaries includes Alex Rodriguez, Cal Ripken Jr., Francisco Lindor, Carlos Correa and Hanley Ramirez; of those players, only Rodriguez and Ramirez also had 100 steals by the time they were 25 years old. 'It was special,' Witt admitted, 'just seeing the kind of names on the list or whatever they showed. But now, it's just kind of on to the next. It was special. We enjoy it. And now it's just onto the next game.' They keep getting more important for the Royals, who have won five straight and seven of their last eight. They head into the third-game of their four-game set against the Rangers with a chance to inch closer to a wild-card spot, and they proved last year that they could do some postseason damage if they can only get in. Witt continues to be the catalyst of their second-half surge, too. He's hitting .291 with 18 homers and 69 RBIs. 'It's special when he goes out there,' said the Royals' Seth Lugo, who allowed just two runs on three hits while pitching into the seventh inning. 'I've been saying it for two years: He goes about his business the same way. He doesn't get up or down on himself. He's a master of consistency. That's what he does.' Witt also happens to be a slick fielder with a Gold Glove in his trophy case. But at the plate is where Witt has become a bona fide star. He led the majors with a .332 average last year, when he hit 32 home runs, stole 31 bases and finished with 109 RBIs. And while he may not quite replicate the average, homer total or RBI numbers in this campaign, he already has 32 stolen bases while getting caught just seven times. 'There's not too many guys that get to 100 (homers),' said Vinnie Pasquantino, who also homered. 'And the fourth player in MLB history with 100 stolen bases? It's not a list I'll ever be on. I mean, it's kind of unbelievable.' 'He's one of the best players in the league for a reason,' Pasquantino said. 'A superstar.'
