Cape Town weather forecast to throw another curveball at Springboks

The Springboks will have spent Saturday night and Sunday undergoing plenty of introspection after suffering a shock defeat to the Wallabies at Ellis Park.
It would be no surprise if Rassie Erasmus has also delivered a bit of an 'uitkak' session, but there is no time for the Springboks to feel sorry for themselves after being well and truly humbled.
Now it's all about the manner in which they respond in Cape Town this Saturday, and what can't be overlooked is the weather forecast for the Mother City.
The last time the Springboks played in Cape Town, they were also met with a wet weather affair against the Barbarians at the end of June, which did add to a rather scrappy performance at times.
It looks like it could be a similar affair this Saturday, with persistent rain predicted for most of the day.
According to the ever reliable WindGuru forecaster, the heaviest rainfall should be around mid morning (0.6mm/1hr), and by kick off there at least shouldn't be much more than a light drizzle.
However, it does mean that the Springboks – and Wallabies – will need to be prepared for a slippery ball and conditions that are less conducive to the high-scoring, high ball-in-play affair we saw at Ellis Park.
Rassie Erasmus and attack coach Tony Brown are fully aware that the Springboks have to find a better balance with their ball-in-hand evolution.
'Tony was 100% in agreement that we didn't employ the kick-to-ruck strategy enough. Tony was saying the whole time, 'boys, we're overplaying, we're overplaying,' Erasmus commented.
'It's not Tony's fault that we overplayed. It was more a case of the guys seeing opportunities.. but Australia's defensive system is such that you constantly feel something's on (to attack).'

Jean-Luc du Preez's long walk back into the Springboks' starting Test jersey

Springboks No 8 Jean-Luc du Preez is 'blocking out the noise' ahead of their match against the Wallabies. Image: Backpagepix Jean-Luc du Preez is pretty conscious of the fact that he hasn't started a Test in a Springbok jersey for seven years. At yesterday's media briefing in Cape Town ahead of the second Rugby Championship match against the Wallabies, he probably mentioned it about three or four times — most of the time with some degree of emotion. Since making his debut against England at Ellis Park in 2018 — Siya Kolisi's first Test as captain of the Boks — Du Preez has only made 14 appearances for the Boks as a bit-part player. He missed out on the Springboks' two Rugby World Cup triumphs in that time, and during some of those long absences in between matches, he thought his Bok dream was just that — a dream. Even this year, after starting against the Barbarians, he got injured and saw regular No 8 Jasper Wiese, utility forward Cobus Wiese, and flank Kolisi all starting ahead of him. Sometimes having hope is a good thing. And Du Preez could never give up hope of starting for the Boks again. 'Your mind is a powerful thing. There were times that I was thinking 'should I just give up on the Springboks?'' Du Preez revealed at the press conference. 'But I would never be able to do that. It's taken quite a while for me to start again … seven years. You can never take this for granted, because when you get your shot, you need to make it count.' The Bordeaux Begles powerhouse knows he will be under the spotlight this weekend against the Aussies in the absence of the suspended Jasper Wiese and Kolisi, who put in a fine display against the Aussies before he suffered a knee injury. But Du Preez says his job is very simple on Saturday … to seek and destroy. 'It's actually my first Test start in seven years, so that speaks for itself. I would just like to do my best for the team and get us on the front foot. Hopefully we can do a good job on Saturday,' said Du Preez.

Kaizer Chiefs star fulfils his father's dream

Siphesihle Ndlovu is not just scoring winning goals for Kaizer Chiefs, he's living out a family dream. Fresh from netting the winner against Polokwane City to keep Amakhosi's 100% Betway Premiership start alive, the midfielder revealed that pulling on the famous jersey is as much about his father as it is about him. The 28-year-old admitted his journey to Kaizer Chiefs wasn't straightforward. A chance to join Amakhosi slipped away earlier in his career, but instead of sulking, he doubled down on his work. Was that Mofokeng's last match for Orlando Pirates? 'It was my father's dream for me to play for the club he has always supported and since the age of about 17 or 18, I have wanted to fulfil that ambition,' Ndlovu told the club's media. 'Right now, he is very happy and so excited, which means the world to me. Orlando Pirates fans find new favourite player 'A while back I missed out on a chance to come here, so I said to myself I will still work hard to hopefully get the opportunity again, so when it did come, I was thrilled to finally sign for Amakhosi,' added the Petermaritzburg-born star. Kaizer Chiefs are 'killing football' according to disgusted boss

Cape Town Spurs CEO Alexi Efstathiou is unhappy with how Kaizer Chiefs have conducted business with the Mother City outfit. Chiefs lured over 19-year-old Luke Baartman and 22-year-old Asanale Velebayi as their winter rebuild takes shape. Two of Cape Town Spurs' finest prospects join Kaizer Chiefs, and the Mother City side receives no compensation. BAD news for Kaizer Chiefs star Mduduzi Shabalala According to Goal, Cape Town Spurs CEO Alexi Efstathiou is disgusted by how Kaizer Chiefs have been able to seal the signatures of their two biggest prospects, Asanele Velebayi and Luke Baartman. Chiefs won their case with the Premier Soccer League's Dispute Resolution Chamber and pay zero compensation for the talented pair who became free agents after Spurs' relegation to the NFD. Efstathiou acknowledges that the players have a right to pursue new opportunities, but feels that this incident could set a dangerous precedent for the wider South African footballing ecosystem. 'This isn't about bitterness, it's about sustainability,' Efstathiou explained via Cape Town Spurs' official website. 'We invest heavily in developing young talent, but if clubs like ours are continually losing players without any return, it becomes impossible to sustain that model. Ultimately, it's the next generation of footballers who will suffer. There has to be a fair balance,' he continued. 'If development clubs aren't rewarded for the work they do, many will shut their doors. That means fewer pathways for young players and weaker foundations for South African football as a whole. 'We need to protect development. Right now, there is no recognition or support from institutions or the government. If this continues, football development will become an endangered species in our country. For those who don't see the bigger picture — you're on the path to killing football,' he concluded. When is Kaizer Chiefs vs Mamelodi Sundowns? Meanwhile, Chiefs have started the campaign perfectly with three wins from three league outings against Stellenbosch, Polokwane and Richards Bay, teeing them up nicely for a clash with Sundowns. Here's how their XI could look with Etiosa Ighodaro leading the line. Petersen; Monyane, Miguel, McCarthy, Cross; Mthethwa, Cele; Lilepo, Ndlovu, Duba; Ighodaro. Chiefs sacrifice an international flop so they can sign a marquee striker Does Alexi Efstathiou have a point? Let us know by leaving a comment below or sending a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211.
