Experts to tour key irrigation projects from August 4 to 6

The Hindu01-08-2025
Amid rising concerns over the alleged irrigation mismanagement and political manipulation of Krishna water issue, a delegation of experts have announced a three-day field visit to major irrigation projects across Andhra Pradesh.
Addressing the media here on Friday, Aalochanaparula Vedika member and retired IPS officer A.B. Venkateswara Rao, Rythu Seva Samithi president Akkineni Bhavani Prasad, and irrigation analyst T. Lakshminarayana said the aim was to bring transparency and factual clarity to the decades'-long water disputes.
Mr. Venkateswara Rao criticised successive governments in both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana for politicising the issue. 'Despite spending crores, projects remain incomplete. Water scarcity is used as an election gimmick, while long-pending projects such as Telugu Ganga, Handri-Neeva, and Galeru-Nagari suffer neglect,' he said.
Mr. Bhavani Prasad urged the government to prioritise the completion of ongoing schemes and prevent wastage of Krishna water into the sea. Mr. Lakshminarayana flagged underutilisation of infrastructure, citing the Srisailam reservoir and the ₹3,800-crore Handri-Neeva expansion.
The Aalochanaparula Vedika also condemned Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy's accusations against Andhra Pradesh, calling them exaggerated and politically motivated. They opposed the proposed Polavaram-Banakacherla scheme, warning that it could endanger Rayalaseema's interests.
The fact-finding tour, scheduled from August 4 to 6, would cover major projects. The team would visit Nallamala Sagar (main reservoir of Veligonda Project) and inspect the tunnel construction on August 4. It would visit Malyala and Muchumarri lift irrigation schemes, Pothireddypadu head regulator, Banakacherla cross regulator, and Velugodu reservoir on August 5, and Gorakallu and Alaganur reservoirs and Sunkesula Barrage on August 6. It would be followed by a consultation meeting with the farmer leaders and civil society members in Kurnool.

Call for true religious freedom in India

Hyderabad Speakers at a national seminar on Saturday expressed grave concern over 'increasing cases of violence against Christians', even as they alleged misuse of law to foist cases on members of this community. 'Religious Freedom in India: Reality or Dream?', organised at the Centenary Baptist Church, by the Civil Rights Initiative Internationale (CRII), saw prominent speakers, including former civil servants, sharing their views. The seminar brought together intellectuals, legal experts, and policy makers, who laid emphasis on justice, equality, and true religious freedom. K. Babu Rao, former IPS officer, and national president of CRII, recalled the case of an Adivasi pastor, Subhash Bhagel, whose son was unable to bury him in the village graveyard. His son had to move the apex court in an effort to get justice. 'Is living as a Christian a crime? Enjoying the religious freedom guaranteed by the Constitution is our right,' he said. Speakers also highlighted the 'lack of religious freedom faced by Dalit Christians and Muslims' due to the 1950 Presidential Order, and urged that efforts should be made towards its repeal. They expressed concern over misuse of anti-conversion laws. 'We are Indians, and we will uphold the Constitution,' was the collective message. Recent incidents from Chhattisgarh and Uttar Pradesh were pointed out. In one incident, over 500 people were booked during a prayer service though they were not 'converted'. In another, birthday cake cutting was labelled a Christian ritual. Keynote speeches were delivered by advocates Tehmina Arora and Franklin Thomas Caesar, both of whom joined the seminar from Delhi. They shared their opinions on how legal systems have been affecting religious freedom in India. Former Chief Secretary of Andhra Pradesh Minnie Mathew was the Chief Guest. Mr. Rao released a book titled 'Swechha Nunchi Cherasala Loki' (From Freedom to Prison), written by journalist Suresh Pulugujju.

Parallel govt being run by IAS officers in state? No, says AAG

Chennai: Expressing its dismay over the volte-face made by the Tamil Nadu govt, on the assurance given to the court that houses, as promised, would be allotted to selected Tamil scholars under the 'Kanavu Illam Scheme', Madras high court on Friday remarked that a parallel govt is being run by IAS officers in the state. Such decisions are taken by IAS officers who do not understand the value of such a scheme, Justice N Anand Venkatesh said, adding that the late chief minister M Karunanidhi would not have allowed such action. The court made the observations while hearing a plea moved by lyricist R Vairamuthu challenging the allotment of a house under the scheme. However, at 2.15pm, when the court resumed its proceedings after lunch, additional advocate-general J Ravindran recorded his strong exception to court's observations. He asserted that the govt is run by chief minister Muthuvel Karunanidhi Stalin and not by any bureaucrat. IAS officers do not understand this — they only operate in the tone of authority. If IAS and IPS officers are allowed to run a parallel govt, it will lead to serious problems," he warned and adjourned the hearing.
