For Greenland's Minerals, the Harsh Reality Behind the Glittering Promise

New York Times03-03-2025

More than a decade ago, Canadian miners prospecting for diamonds in western Greenland saw on the horizon a huge white hump.
They called it White Mountain and soon discovered it was a deposit of anorthosite, a salt-and-pepper color mineral used in paints, glass fibers, flame retardants and other industries. The same mineral creates a ghostly glow on the moon's surface.
The White Mountain deposit proved to be several miles long and several miles wide, and 'only God knows how deep it goes,' said Bent Olsvig Jensen, the managing director of Lumina Sustainable Materials, the company mining the area.
Lumina is backed by European and Canadian investors, but Mr. Jensen said it wasn't easy to turn the deposit into a mountain of cash.
'You cannot do exploration all year round; you are in the Arctic,' he explained.
He told of fierce winds grounding helicopters and knocking out communications, pack ice blocking ships and temperatures dropping to such a dreadful low — sometimes minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit — that the hydraulic fluid powering the company's digging machines 'becomes like butter.'
Sitting in Lumina's humble offices in Nuuk, Greenland's capital, with wet snow flakes scissoring down outside the windows, Mr. Jensen brought a dose of sobriety to all the talk of Greenland as the land of incalculable mineral riches. He noted that though the island has dozens of exploratory projects, there are only two active mines: his and a small gold operation.

Want to dodge tariffs and buy an all-American car? A Tesla remains your best bet.

Trump's tariffs are shaking the auto industry, but Tesla might have a key advantage. The EV giant swept list of the most American-made vehicles, with the Model 3 taking the top spot. Tesla produces all its EVs in US factories, unlike rivals Ford and GM, which build several models in Mexico. Tesla has the most American-made cars, and it might be a tariff trump card. The Elon Musk-led automaker has swept list of the "American-made" cars, with the Model 3 taking the title of the most American vehicle. The automaker's Model Y, S, and X vehicles took the other spots in the top four, with no vehicles from Detroit rivals Ford and GM cracking the top 10. Cars from several European and Asia automakers with production facilities in the US, such as VW, Kia, and Honda, featured high on the list. Every year, American-made index ranks cars sold in the US by how much of the vehicle and its parts are made in the country. The index examines factors including the percentage of American parts, location of final assembly, and the origin of components such as transmissions and engines. Tesla vehicles have topped the list for the past four years, suggesting the company is in a strong position to deal with the tariff turmoil that has gripped the auto industry. Here are the top 10, as ranked by Tesla Model 3 Tesla Model Y Tesla Model S Tesla Model X Jeep Gladiator Kia EV6 Honda Ridgeline Honda Odyssey Honda Passport Volkswagen ID.4 The Trump administration unveiled 25% tariffs on imported cars and vehicle parts in March, raising fears of supply chain chaos and soaring new vehicle prices. Tesla already manufactures all of the cars it sells in the US in factories in California and Texas, and its dominance of the American-made index suggests the company is less exposed to the tariffs on car parts than some of its rivals. The Model 3 in particular has risen from 21st on last year's index, thanks to a 2024 redesign that saw the percentage of American and Canadian parts in the car rise from 47% to 75%. By contrast, analysts have said that Detroit giants Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis risk being particularly hard hit by the tariffs due to their reliance on factories in Mexico. Analysts for warned that the tariffs are having the greatest impact on entry-level vehicles that are priced under $30,000, with the number of low-cost cars on the market falling 13% in May compared to last year. Paris Air Show: TotalEnergies Signs a Deal with Quatra to Secure Feedstock for Its Biorefineries

PARIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- TotalEnergies (Paris:TTE) (LSE:TTE) (NYSE:TTE) and Quatra, the European market leader in the collection and recycling of used cooking oil, have signed a 15-year agreement beginning in 2026, for the supply of 60,000 tons a year of European used cooking oil to TotalEnergies' biorefineries. This deal contributes to secure the feedstock to produce biodiesel and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). From the collection of used cooking oil to the production of biofuels in France Under the terms of the agreement, Quatra will collect used cooking oil directly from restaurants, restaurant chains and industry in France and the rest of Europe. The oil will then be delivered to Quatra sites for filtering before being shipped to TotalEnergies' biorefineries to produce road biofuels and SAF. TotalEnergies has converted its refineries at La Mède in the south of France and Grandpuits near Paris into biorefineries. La Mède: The biorefinery at La Mède, launched in 2019, has an annual production capacity of 500,000 tons of biofuel. Through this site, TotalEnergies is the only producer of HVO biodiesel in France. This year, La Mède will also produce sustainable aviation fuel for airports in the south of France. Grandpuits: the site's conversion into a zero-crude complex includes a biorefinery with an annual production capacity of 230,000 tons of sustainable aviation fuel. Commissioning is planned for 2026. TotalEnergies has partnered with SARIA, the European leader in the collection and reuse of organic waste in the form of sustainable products, which will supply most of the site's feedstock. 'I am delighted with this strategic agreement with Quatra that contributes to our aim to secure the feedstock we need to produce biofuels in our biorefineries. The development of biofuels is one of our Company's strategic goals. By directly reducing the carbon intensity of the energy products used by our customers, we are actively working with them as part of our net zero approach, together with society,' said Valérie Goff, Senior Vice President, Renewable Fuels & Chemicals at TotalEnergies. 'At Quatra, we believe in long-term partnerships with leading industrial groups that combine logistics, environmental responsibility and financial viability. The deal between Quatra France and TotalEnergies is an excellent example of that. By supplying locally collected used cooking oil, we are contributing to a sustainable value chain. That allows us to focus on our core business, which is the efficient collection of used cooking oil across France, allowing TotalEnergies to turn that valuable resource into biofuel,' stated Pol Van Pollaert, Co-CEO, Quatra. *** About TotalEnergies TotalEnergies is a global integrated energy company that produces and markets energies: oil and biofuels, natural gas, biogas and low-carbon hydrogen, renewables and electricity. Slovakia near deal with US for Westinghouse to build nuclear reactor, PM Fico says

(Reuters) -Slovakia is close to a deal with Washington that would see U.S. company Westinghouse build a new nuclear reactor in the central European country, Prime Minister Robert Fico said on Tuesday. Slovakia, which currently has five nuclear reactors at two plants, plans to expand its nuclear power capacity in the coming decades to meet growing consumption. The government approved plans last year for a new unit owned by the state and operational by 2040. Fico told a news conference that an agreement between the Slovak and U.S. governments was being prepared and that his government was waiting for the final U.S. position. "As long as this goes through, we can move toward the signing of an intergovernmental agreement that would be aimed at having American company Westinghouse build a new nuclear power unit at the Jaslovske Bohunice nuclear power plant," he said. "It is a huge investment. We are talking about a new unit with output of 1,250 megawatts." He did not say how much the deal would be worth. Slovakia's economy ministry last year estimated costs could run up to 10 billion euros ($11.57 billion). Slovakia's electricity production surpassed its annual consumption in 2023 after Slovenske Elektrarne completed the 472 MW nuclear power Unit 3 at the Mochovce plant. Slovenske Elektrarne is majority owned by Czech energy holding company EPH and the state has a 34% stake. It is now completing another reactor at the same site and also operates two 505 MW units at the Bohunice plant. ($1 = 0.8645 euros) Sign in to access your portfolio
