Messi out indefinitely with 'minor muscle injury': Club

MIAMI - Inter Miami captain Lionel Messi will be sidelined indefinitely with what the MLS team described as a "minor muscle injury in his right leg" in a statement on Sunday.
The 38-year-old Argentine legend suffered an upper right leg injury early in Miami's penalty-kicks home win over Mexico's Necaxa on Saturday in a Leagues Cup match.
Messi went out in the 11th minute but walked off the field and into the locker room.
Messi "underwent medical tests to evaluate the extent of the muscle discomfort he experienced" that forced him out of the match, Inter Miami said in its statement.
"The results confirmed a minor muscle injury in his right leg. His medical clearance will depend on his clinical progress and response to treatment."
That means there is no timetable for a return by the Miami talisman, who shares the MLS season lead with 18 goals and also has nine assists in 18 matches.
Jordi Alba, who netted an equalizer for Miami in second half stoppage time to set up the penalty shootout the hosts won 5-4, said Messi's early exit was "a huge sadness for the whole team." Inter Miami is 12-4 with six drawn for 42 points, fifth in the Eastern Conference and eight points adrift of league pace-setter Philadelphia but with three matches in hand.
Any extended absence also would be a major blow for Miami in the Leagues Cup, which Inter won in 2023 just after Messi arrived in South Florida.
Miami, which will host UNAM Pumas on Wednesday, ranks second on the MLS table to qualify for the Leagues Cup knockout stage with five points and would clinch a quarter-final berth with a victory. - AFP

The club also warned that approving the proposal could compromise sporting integrity and 'set an unacceptable precedent,' insisting any change of this nature should require 'the express and unanimous agreement of all the clubs participating in the competition'. Jafar-Felisha only combined a year ago but have clicked quickly and rose to No. 1 in the mixed doubles in Indonesia. The world No. 11 duo are set to pose a threat to their rivals in their first appearance in the world meet from Aug 25-31 in Paris. Jafar-Felisha proved their capabilities by bagging the World Tour Super 300 Taiwan Open title in May. The pair also captured bronze in their debut Asian Championships in April and reached the semi-finals of the Super 1000 China Open last month. Indonesian doubles coach Rionny Mainaky has backed Jafar-Felisha to defy the odds again and reach the final in Paris. 'I have seen that Jafar and Felisha are capable of handling pressure. 'I want them to prove themselves in the World Championships,' said Rionny in an interview posted in the Indonesian National Badminton Association website. 'They have the skills and they are ready. Yiat Qing and Enrique joined seasoned diver Pandelela Rinong on the sidelines as Malaysia bank on a relatively inexperienced squad to maintain their dominance in the sport. Pandelela's lingering injury put paid to the younger Yiat Qing's chances to make a second SEA Games appearance in the women's 10m platform synchro event. Yiat Qing was paired off with Pandelela a few months back to prepare for the women's 10m platform synchro event. It is the only event for women's diving while the men's action s will see contests in the 1m and 3m springboard individual, and 3m springboard synchro. Yiat Qing was only 15 when she made her SEA Games debut by winning gold in the women's 10m platform individual at the Cambodia SEA Games in 2023 and she was subsequently promoted to the Podium programme this year. Enrique claimed gold for Malaysia in the men's 10m platform individual but has to miss the SEA Games this time as the event has not been included by the Thailand organisers despite appeals from numerous countries. Nur Eilisha and Nurul, together with Elvis Priestly Anak Clement, are going under category B while defending men's 3m springboard champion Mohd Syafiq Puteh will compete under category A along with debutants Nurqayyum Nazmi Mohd Nazim and Yong Rui Jie. Elvis was Malaysia's best individual performer at the World Championships in Singapore recently when he reached the semi-finals (top 18) of the men's 10m platform individual. But Elvis will have to see action in the men's 3m springboard this time. "It is not confirmed yet as to who will compete in what events for the springboard divers,'' added Ken Nee. "We do have a tough fight going on for the gold medals this time, especially from Singapore but we will try our best to continue the good results." The last time Malaysia did not finish with a clean sweep in diving was at the 2017 SEA Games. Malaysia bagged a total of 13 gold medals but had to surrender the women's 3m springboard synchro title to Singapore after Wendy Ng Yan Yee committed a doping violation. In Cambodia, Malaysia won a total of four gold, two silver and one bronze medals.
