THOUSANDS of mobile customers are set to benefit from a free network boost – just hours after a major service was switched off.
O2 (Virgin Media) revealed it has upgraded its 4G and 5G coverage across more than 2,000 postcodes in Coventry, West Midlands.

The improvements are part of the company's £700million Mobile Transformation Plan, aimed at future-proofing the network and keeping pace with soaring demand.

A spokesperson said the plan ensures the network is 'fit for the future and can keep up with increasing customer demand.'
The free upgrade comes as mobile providers, including O2, continue to phase out older 3G services across the UK.
The switch-off is making way for more advanced and efficient 4G and 5G services.
Mobile usage has skyrocketed in recent years, with data traffic more than doubling over the past five years – making upgrades like this increasingly essential.
And O2 isn't the only one dishing out freebies.
Earlier this year, EE handed thousands of customers a free 5G upgrade, even for those on older 4G plans.
Vodafone also rolled out free speed boosts to eligible users, increasing data allowances and offering better access to 5G where available.

Meanwhile, Three UK recently gave select customers free roaming perks across Europe and upgraded network speeds in several major cities – all without charging a penny more.
These giveaways come as mobile giants try to stay ahead in an increasingly competitive market – and soften the blow of 3G shutdowns and rising bills for millions.
So if you're with one of the big networks, it's worth checking if a free upgrade is already waiting for you.
Is the 3G switch off that big of a deal?

It's unclear exactly how many people will be affected by the 3G switch off.
There wasn't much noise after Three, EE and Vodafone ended 3G.
So, there will undoubtedly be some still using 3G-only phones but the numbers are probably very small.
Just because it may be a small figure doesn't mean those people should be cast aside, especially if they're not very tech-savvy or vulnerable.
So definitely get in contact with O2 (or GiffGaff and Tesco Mobile) if you need support.

It is the mobile network service used by millions of people around the UK. But O2 has now issued a warning to customers ahead of a major change that will stop some phones from working. The UK's 3G network is slowly being switched off in favour of faster, more reliable 4G and 5G. EE and Vodafone have already switched off their networks, and now O2 is the latest company to deactivate this older system. Customers who haven't upgraded will still be able to make calls and send text messages as normal, but won't be able to use mobile data. O2 says that the 3G network currently carries less than two per cent of total network traffic. That means most customers with newer devices won't notice the change, since their phones don't use the 3G network. However, there are concerns that the switch could leave older and more vulnerable customer suddenly unable to use their phones. Virgin Media O2's 3G network was first launched 20 years ago, but has since become outdated. The company has already begun deactivating the network in some parts of the country, starting with Durham in April this year. This was followed by Norwich, Telford, and Guildford, which all lost 3G connection in the following months. Virgin Media O2 says that the next town to have its network shut down will be Torquay in August, with the rest of the UK network being entirely withdrawn by the end of the year. This change will also affect customers of networks which use O2's 3G infrastructure, including Tesco Mobile, Sky Mobile, and giffgaff. To ensure that older and vulnerable customers, who might still be using older devices, don't get left behind, Virgin Media O2 has partnered with the charity Age UK. Jeanie York, Virgin Media O2's Chief Technology Officer, says: 'While we know that the vast majority of our customers already have a 4G or 5G handset and do not need to take any action, our priority has always been to support the minority who may be impacted. 'Given that many of these customers are likely to be older and potentially less tech-savvy, it makes perfect sense to partner with Age UK as we carry out this migration.' Age UK will provide additional support for the older customers who will need to upgrade their phones to keep accessing mobile data. The charity will provide information on its website and social media channels and via its Advice Line. Customers with an old, unwanted handset are encouraged to recycle it through O2 recycle, which could offer them cash in exchange for their old phone. Caroline Abrahams, Charity Director at Age UK, says: 'The 3G switch-off may feel daunting for many older people so it's important that we do all we can to support those affected. 'It's important to note that for those using a 3G network who don't wish to change their handset, for now they will still be able to make phone calls and send texts as they do today – it's just their mobile data this change will affect.' For the very best value for money, I would always encourage anyone to change provider routinely. This is also how you can claim some extra freebies as well that go beyond your phone network service. Here, I reveal three options to cut your mobile bills. #1 STAY AND SAVE You might be happy with the actual service you're currently receiving and therefore reluctant to go elsewhere, with excellent 5G around the areas that matter most, like home and work. Less tech-confident users are simply put off because they're afraid of losing their number. It is possible to transfer your number to another provider but if you're not sure, this might be the option for you to save. Firstly, the most important thing to check is whether you're out of contract. If you're unsure, the easiest way to find out is by texting INFO to 85075 - it's a free number. Your network should ping you back with the information you need. Now, the last thing your provider wants is for you to leave and go somewhere else. Years ago, this used to be a massive headache, requiring you to ring up for a PAC code to transfer your number elsewhere. It inevitably led to waiting in queues and then having to navigate conversations with telesales reps desperate to prevent you from leaving. Since 2019, you've been able to cut that out and text to request it instantly by messaging the word PAC to 65075. Now, if you're out of contract and request the PAC code, this may well trigger your provider to ping you back with an offer to stay. Requesting the code won't make any changes to your service or account until you've handed that code over to a new provider, so there's no harm in trying it out today. #2 SWITCH TO SAVE - BUT KEEP THE SAME SIGNAL If there's not a good offer available with your provider, you may well have to switch. As mentioned before, you might be reluctant to do this if you get a good service. However, there are ways to switch while actually having the same network signal. There are three main network providers in the UK that own and run the masts. These are EE, O2 and VodafoneThree (the latter recently merged to form the UK's biggest mobile network). All the other networks just piggyback off one of these three using their masts. Often, these networks are a lot cheaper too. For example, Lyca Mobile piggybacks off EE. So if you're an EE customer and want to switch but keep the same network, you could try Lyca Mobile. It's important to note that these sorts of alternative networks can be subject to something called "throttling", where data speeds can be slightly lower, so it's worth checking before signing up - but it will run off exactly the same signal as your old provider. MOBILE PROVIDER PIGGYBACKS REVEALED Here are some of the mobile providers piggybacking off the UK's main networks so you have an idea of who you could switch to. And not only that, you can get some free extra perks along the way too. These often get forgotten when working out what's worthwhile. So, if you were to switch to O2 you would get a choice of O2 Extras. You get to pick one, including Disney+ or Amazon Prime for six months, or an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate pass. A Prime subscription alone would cost you more than £53 for the six months over that time. You can also add Prime onto your O2 bill for a £2 discount going forward as well. Other networks have similar offers. In my case, I recently switched to Vodafone. They offered me Amazon Prime for £1 for three months, as well as Disney+ for free for three months. I've since been offered YouTube Premium (worth £12.99 a month) free for two months. As well as free food from Sainbury's and drinks from Costa Coffee. So if switching is an option for you, take it. Remember, you can text PAC to 65075 to keep your existing number.

O2 issues important new alert to UK users ahead of major change coming this year
O2 is shutting down its 3G network and offering help to older users. There's a major change taking place this year and it could leave some without vital access to data on their devices. The UK's 3G service is slowly being switched off in favour of faster and more reliable 4G and 5G. UK networks, including EE and Vodafone, have already turned off 3G, and now O2 is doing exactly the same. Although the majority of users won't notice any difference - as their devices won't be connecting to data via 3G - some older and more vulnerable customers may find their phones suddenly stop working if they haven't yet upgraded to something new. It's clearly a concern as many people need their phones to keep in touch with friends and family. To offer some help, Virgin Media O2, has confirmed that it is now working with Age UK to help raise awareness of the UK's 3G switch off. 'The 3G switch-off may feel daunting for many older people so it's important that we do all we can to support those affected,' said Caroline Abrahams, Charity Director at Age UK. O2 will have disconnected its 3G signal by the end of the year, and that means those with non-4G or 5G ready devices won't be able to access services such as WhatsApp. The closure has actually already started. Durham was the first town O2 turned off 3G. This was followed by Norwich, Telford and Guildford . Torquay will be next before the entire network is shut down by the end of the year. 'Virgin Media O2 and Age UK are working together to provide additional support to the small number of older mobile phone users who will need to upgrade their handsets to continue using mobile data once 3G is switched off,' Virgin Media O2 said. 'Virgin Media O2 will support Age UK's work to develop and distribute new informative content designed for older people and their families to help them better understand the 3G switch-off. The charity will provide key information on its website and social media channels and, via its Advice Line, support older people and their families who are seeking advice in relation to the 3G switch off.' Age UK will support 'disadvantaged older people' by staging in-person awareness sessions. These services will also be available to older customers along with those who use providers who piggyback of the O2 network. These include Giffgaff, Tesco Mobile and Sky Mobile. So, how do you know if you are affected? Virgin Media O2 said it was writing directly to all customers currently without a 4G or 5G handset. The network has also confirmed that it will offer free compatible devices for known vulnerable customers and discounts on new handsets for all others. If you have a phone that only has 3G connectivity, it will also support 2G networks. This means after the 3G switch-off, you will still be able to send and receive voice calls and text messages. Luckily the impact of this change should be small. According to Virgin Media O2, its 3G network carries less than 2% of all network data. 'Anyone who is feeling worried and would like some support can get in touch with their provider to find out more about their options and make sure they are ready for the change, or they can call Age UK's Advice Line for free on 0800 169 65 65,' said Age UK's Abrahams.
