Uzbekistan qualifies for FIFA World Cup for the first time after draw against UAE

The Hindu2 days ago

Uzbekistan qualified for the World Cup for the first time on Thursday as a 0-0 draw with the United Arab Emirates confirmed the nation's progress to next year's finals as Australia and Jordan moved to the verge of booking berths in North America.
Aziz Behich's 90th-minute strike earned the Socceroos a 1-0 win over already-qualified Japan in Perth in Group C to keep Tony Popovic's side three points clear of Saudi Arabia, which won 2-0 against Bahrain in Riffa.
Goals from Musab Al-Juwayr and Abdulrahman Al-Obud earned Saudi Arabia a victory that puts Australia's celebrations on hold until the two nations meet in Jeddah on Tuesday.
But Australia's vastly superior goal difference means it can lose that meeting with the Saudis by up to four goals and still advance to a sixth consecutive World Cup finals as second-placed finisher behind the Japanese.

Jordan also moved to the cusp of qualification as Ali Olwan's hat-trick delivered a 3-0 win over Oman in Muscat to leave Jamal Sellami's side waiting for the result from South Korea's clash with Iraq in Basra later on Thursday in Group B.
Uzbekistan goalkeeper Utkir Yusupov made a string of second-half saves in Abu Dhabi to frustrate the UAE and earn his nation its first World Cup qualification since the country gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.
Abbosbek Fayzullaev had hit the crossbar with a 54th-minute header for the visitor, but it was Yusupov who frustrated the Cosmin Olaroiu-coached Emiratis, which needed to win to maintain its hopes of automatic qualification.
The draw means the UAE will now progress to the fourth round of qualifying as the point earned guarantees a third- or fourth-placed finish in Group A.

Scottish All-Rounder Breaks Beloved Kapil Dev's Record

Last Updated: McMullen ranks as the second fastest player to score 1000 runs and take 50 wickets in ODIs. Surpassing legends like Kapil Dev and Shakib al-Hasan. South Africa born 25 year-old Scottish All-Rounder Brandon McMullen now ranks above the renowned Indian cricketer Kapil Dev, an all-time-great all-rounder (who guided India to their World Cup title in 1983), becoming the second fastest player to score a 1000 runs, and take 50 wickets in ODIs. He also surpassed the likes of Lance Klusener of South Africa, who was one of the best all-rounders of the 90s and the early 2000s, legendary Greg Chappell of Australia, and Bangladeshi cricketing icon, Shakib al-Hasan. McMullen achieved this feat during Scotland's match against Netherlands in the Netherlands Tri-Nation Series, which was the eleventh round of the ongoing ICC Men's Cricket World Cup League 2. He took 33 matches to get the double, placing himself just below Netherlands' legend Ryan Ten Doeschate who took 28 innings to get the record. Scotland won the match by a comfortable margin of 44 runs. During the match itself McMullen got just 9 runs in 13 balls while batting (hitting two fours in the process), whilst Finlay McCreath scored 81 off 106 balls (seven fours and one six), and Mark Watt 60 off 72 balls (five fours and two sixes) – their half-centuries helping Scotland to get to 262/9 in 50 overs. However, McMullen was lethal with his bowling, picking up 3 wickets in 10 overs – collecting the wickets of Max O'Dowd (23 runs off 14 balls, hitting two fours and two sixes), Vikramjeet Singh (7 runs off 14 balls, hitting just one four), and Noah Croes (26 runs off 24 balls, hitting four fours), with Netherlands' innings ending at 218 in 45 overs, and McMullen giving away 40 runs. McMullen now ranks above the likes of Zeeshan Maqsood of Oman (37 innings), Corey Anderson of New Zealand (40 innings), Lance Klusener of South Africa (42 innings), Greg Chappell of Australia (44 innings), Kapil Dev of India (46 innings), Steve Waugh of Australia (46 innings) and Rohan Mustafa of UAE/Shakib al-Hasan of Bangladesh (50 innings each). He made his international debut for Scotland in 2022, making his ODI debut against Namibia. In 33 ODIs, he has amassed 1149 runs at an average of 45.96, with four centuries, and four half-centuries to his name in 29 innings. His personal best being 151. On the bowling end, he has collected 52 wickets at an average of 20.09. His personal best being 5/34 in a close match against Ireland. First Published: June 07, 2025, 12:47 IST

Ponting names Virat Kohli's replacement in India XI vs England, doesn't want KL Rahul to open: 'It makes life easier'

India will begin a new era in Test cricket on June 20 when the side takes on England in the first Test of the five-match series at Headingley. Shubman Gill will lead the side that will be without Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, with both retiring from the format last month. While Gill's captaincy justifiably be in focus, another major point of discussion is Kohli's replacement at the no.4 spot. Kohli took the position from the great Sachin Tendulkar when he called time on his career in 2013, and held the role successfully for the next 12 years. According to former Australia captain and multiple World Cup-winner Ricky Ponting, Gill should succeed Kohli in the role. Ponting believes that taking over the no.4 role will make it easier for Gill to lead the Indian team as well. Interestingly, Ponting doesn't want KL Rahul to open the innings. "I think (Sai) Sudarshan and (Yashasvi) Jaiswal will open the batting (in England) as Sudarshan just looks like a class player to me and technically I think he could do well at Test level," Ponting told The ICC Review. "They'll have two pretty young opening batters, so they might look to go for someone that's got a bit more experience at No.3. 'Whether that's KL (Rahul) or Karun (Nair) at No.3, and then Shubman might end up being that No.4 player, which will probably make life for him a little bit easier as a captain as well.' Ponting believes that opening the batting or playing at no.3 – which had been Gill's designated role in Tests so far – will put pressure on the youngster. 'Not having to be opening or batting at No.3 as a young captain might make it easier. Their top five will probably be Sudarshan, Jaiswal, KL, Gill and Karun Nair for the start of the England series,' said the Aussie great. KL Rahul, meanwhile, smashed a century for India A while opening the batting during the second warm-up match against England Lions on Friday. Rahul scored 116 after India A batted first, with Dhruv Jurel also scoring a half-century. Rahul had been opening the innings for the side in the absence of Rohit Sharma during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, but was shifted to middle-order when the former captain linked up with the side ahead of the second Test.

From Real Madrid to Brazil: Davide follows father Carlo Ancelotti to join Selecao as assistant coach

Brazil's football confederation announced on Friday that Davide Ancelotti had joined his father, Carlo Ancelotti, as an assistant coach for the five-time World Cup champion. Davide Ancelotti started his career as an assistant coach in 2015, following his father at Napoli, Everton, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid. Brazil's football body said in a statement that the 35-year-old Davide Ancelotti's arrival 'represents another step in our search for innovation and technical improvements.' 'His international experience and training methodologies will be fundamental for the players' development and for the construction of an even more competitive team,' it said. Carlo Ancelotti's debut with Brazil at Ecuador on Thursday ended in a 0-0 draw, which kept the team in the fourth place in the South American World Cup qualifying standings. Davide Ancelotti is expected to be on the bench on Tuesday, when Brazil hosts third-place Paraguay. Davide Ancelotti initially followed in his father's footsteps as a professional footballer at AC Milan's youth team and then at Borgomanero, but he retired at the age 20 to work in management. He holds a degree in sports science. Davide Ancelotti's coaching career started in 2012 as a fitness coach at Paris Saint-Germain. He had a similar role at Real Madrid from 2013 to 2015. His first assistant manager position came at Bayern Munich in 2016 and then at the other clubs his father managed. Related Topics Brazil / Carlo Ancelotti
