Pickleball passion in full swing

The Sun28-04-2025
SEREMBAN: Leveraging on the rapid growth of pickleball in Malaysia, Negeri Sembilan hosted its inaugural state-level open tournament, the 'Pickleball Network Cup 2025', held at The Pickle Place here on Saturday.
The event attracted 56 skilled players, showcasing the increasing popularity of
the sport across the state since its introduction in 2020.
More than just a competition, it reflected a shared commitment among the younger generation to embrace healthy, active lifestyles and strengthen the vibrant sporting spirit of the community.
Bukit Kepayang assemblywoman and state Tourism, Arts and Culture executive councillor Nicole Tan commended the growing enthusiasm for pickleball among young people.
'I'm happy to see that more youngsters are getting involved in this sport. The younger generation are playing until the early hours, and this is a positive development.
'This will deter them from hanging around at eateries or partying all night. It's far better to spend their time engaging in sports activities,' she said after the prize-giving ceremony for the event.
'This will also help to keep the younger generation fit and healthy, as sports is a form of exercise.'
Tan added that Negeri Sembilan has emerged as an active hub for pickleball,
while expressing confidence that with encouragement from the state government, more youth would be drawn to the sport.
To boost momentum in the sport, she presented a RM1,000 contribution to the Negeri Sembilan Pickleball Association to support its initiatives in promoting and expanding pickleball throughout the state.
The tournament featured two teams of 28 players each, with the 'Dinking Dynamos' group emerging victorious, scoring 113 points against rivals 'Smash Spartans', with 67 points.
The top performers, recognised as the 'Most Valuable Players' for earning the highest points for their teams, were Stella Carra Ross and
G. Sunder Ganasan from the Dinking Dynamos, along with Vernon Chan and Tira Low from the Smash Spartans.
Association president Michael Robin Jayesuria said there are approximately
500 pickleball players in the state, spanning all age groups.
He added that the sport is rapidly gaining popularity as more people are drawn to its unique combination of table tennis, badminton and tennis.
Jayesuria said the association has actively reached out to advocate the introduction of pickleball in schools, with the ultimate goal of having the sport included in the Sukma Games.
He expressed hope that local governments would allow the use of existing sports facilities for pickleball to engage more youth.
'Many local sports facilities are under-utilised, including courts for sepak takraw, badminton and futsal. It would be great if these could also accommodate pickleball games,' he said, adding that such sharing of facilities were already in practice at the Rasah Kemayan Sports Complex, where futsal and pickleball games are held.
He said expanding such a practice would allow more people to experience pickleball, setting a trend for such arrangements to be made at other facilities.
Jayesuria also said the Star Fresh Agro Park in Kuala Pilah is paving the way for growth of the sport in the state, having opened four pickleball courts in January.
'This is a fantastic step forward, but we need more private companies to come on board.
'Converting vacant properties into pickleball courts would provide much-needed spaces, and financial support from businesses would also help drive growth of the sport,' he added.

Bayern ends Rwanda tourism sponsorship after criticism

Bayern Munich fans criticised the deal with Rwanda, saying it 'betrayed the values' of the club. (EPA Images pic) MUNICH : Bayern Munich will end a sponsorship promoting tourism in Rwanda after controversy relating to the ongoing conflict in the region. Bayern on Friday announced its partnership with the African nation, initially signed in 2023 and set to run until 2028, would shift to focus on a youth academy. 'The new arrangement transitions away from a commercial sponsorship to a dedicated partnership focusing on football development in Rwanda through the expansion of the FC Bayern Youth Academy in Kigali,' Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen said in a statement. The statement did not expressly mention the underlying reasons for the shift, but German media on Friday widely reported the decision was motivated by criticism as a result of the escalating conflict. In February, Bayern fans held up a banner at a home game saying the deal 'betrayed the values' of the club. The Rwandan government has been accused of disregarding human rights and supporting rebels fighting against government forces in the neighbouring Democratic Republic of the Congo. At the beginning of 2025, violence in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo intensified. The Rwandan-backed M23 armed group and Rwandan troops seized Goma, the capital of North Kivu province, in January, and then Bukavu, the capital of South Kivu province, in February. The UN estimates thousands have died as a result of the attacks. The deal included 'Visit Rwanda' advertising at Bayern's 75,000-seat Allianz Arena home ground and replaced a controversial deal with Qatar, which was also criticised by the club's supporters. Following criticism of the previous deal, Bayern sent staff to Rwanda to assess the situation on the ground. The new contract runs until 2028. Premier League side Arsenal and Champions League winners Paris St-Germain have also faced criticism for similar sponsorship deals with Rwanda.

Silambam officially back in Selangor Sukma after review

KUALA LUMPUR: Traditional martial art silambam has been included in next year's Selangor Malaysia Games (Sukma), joining petanque and muaythai as optional sports following a review by the supreme committee. The decision came after a special meeting on Thursday attended by Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, Sarawak Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, and Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) president Tan Sri Norza Zakaria. The proposal was put forward by Selangor State Youth, Sports and Entrepreneurship executive councillor Najwan Halimi, who also chairs the organising committee. The Selangor Sukma will now feature 30 compulsory and seven optional sports, with the committee confirming that no further proposals or appeals will be considered. Silambam's initial omission had drawn concern from several quarters of the community before the review led to its inclusion. Hannah said her ministry is also exploring "Non-Sukma Games" for sports not on the programme. "Additionally, a new model for organising Sukma after the 2028 Kelantan edition is being studied to ensure the continuous development of sports and athletes without placing a heavy financial burden on the government," she said. The Selangor Sukma will take place across nine districts from August 15-24, 2026.

Muaythai, petanque and silambam debut in SUKMA 2026

KUALA LUMPUR: Three optional sports—muaythai, petanque, and silambam—will make their debut in the 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) in Selangor. The decision was finalised during a special meeting of the SUKMA Supreme Committee. The National Sports Council (NSC) confirmed the addition in a statement today. The meeting was attended by Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh and Sarawak's Minister of Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah. Also present were Olympic Council of Malaysia president Tan Sri Mohamad Norza Zakaria and state sports officials. Selangor State Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneurship Exco Mohd Najwan Halimi proposed the inclusion of the three sports. The SUKMA Supreme Committee unanimously approved the proposal. With the addition, SUKMA 2026 will feature 30 compulsory and seven optional sports. No further proposals for additional sports will be considered. SUKMA 2026 is scheduled from 15 to 24 August across nine Selangor districts. Hannah Yeoh revealed that the Ministry of Youth and Sports is exploring a 'Non-SUKMA Games' initiative. This event would cater to sports not selected for SUKMA. The new model is expected to launch after SUKMA Kelantan 2028. The initiative aims to sustain athlete development without straining government resources. - Bernama
