John Stones committed to Manchester City: ‘I want to stay here, I love it'
John Stones has committed his future to Manchester City after admitting he questioned whether there was a way back from some 'dark days' during an injury-ravaged season.
The England international defender is into his tenth season at Manchester City but foot and hamstring injuries plagued him last season.

It limited him to only 13 starts in all competitions and the influx of new defenders in the last two transfer windows led to speculation as to whether he could be allowed to leave before his contract expires next summer.
'I'm here, I want to stay here, I love it,' Stones said. 'I'm here to help the team. I don't know what's been said or speculated, but I hope that kind of shuts it down.'
Stones made several comebacks last season but each time his body broke down. The last time he made an appearance was in February when he started the second-leg of the Champions League play-off match against Real Madrid but only lasted eight minutes before going down again.
'There's been points where you think, you've been giving all this effort, you dedicate all your life, especially how I approach or go about my life, and football, I give everything, on and off the pitch to be here or be ready to play games and those are the dark days,' he said.
'I think everyone's been through them and think, 'Why is this happening?'. You wish it would go a different path, but like I said, it's self-doubt, there's a lot of things
'All of us have been through different upbringings and challenges through life and what did we do within those situations, was it fight or was it give up? I was a fighter from a young age, in difficult moments, you have to look at the bigger picture and realise what are your morals, what you believe in, and fight to make it worthwhile.'
Stones turned 31 last month and is now one of the most senior players with 277 appearances for the club.
He is an experienced international player but he found the difficulty of diagnosing and treating his injury problems mentally challenging.
'I don't know what the reason was and we've sat with the medical staff, sports science, to try and figure out why,' he said. 'Some things can't be explained, which is even more testing mentally when there's not really an answer.

'I've been unlucky with some of the injuries that I've had, they were very rare last season, after speaking to specialists. Sometimes I think, why has it happened to me? But I've got to deal with that and move forward and try to adapt with how my body's adapting.
'I think we all self-doubt as players and feel things and we want to get back as quick as possible.
'Maybe that's a downfall sometimes that you try to push too soon. Definitely family, I think that's my biggest thing, being around them and having their support. You can feel very lonely at times when you're training by yourself and that's the difficult part of it, being in a team sport, not training with the team when you run out of the pitch in your rehab.
'So a lot of things that you've got to get used to and deal with and try and set yourself goals to come back and it's been a challenge. I am over that hurdle.'
City have signed Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis, adding to a central defensive group that includes Ruben Dias, Josko Gvardiol, Manuel Akanji and Nathan Ake.
Some players and managers have complained about the expanded Club World Cup adding more games to an already packed calendar but Stones is viewing it as an opportunity to re-assert himself.
'I feel great, I'm back fit, ready to help the team when called upon. I think this season I've got to look more detailed into training, things that I can do off the pitch that I can sustain playing a lot more games.
'It's difficult when you're injured, you almost work longer and more, so from that aspect I know the guys mentally and physically have had such a long season.
'I suppose mentally for me it's been difficult dealing with the injuries and the process, but now I've put that behind me and used this as a mini introduction back into before the new season and another trophy for us to hopefully win and get some game time.'

Robert Griffin III says Michael Penix Jr. will be NFL's 'breakout QB' of 2025
After several mediocre seasons, the Atlanta Falcons have a real shot to turn things around in 2025. While we've seen this team compete for the NFC South title in recent years, Atlanta hasn't made the playoffs since 2017. Second-year quarterback Michael Penix Jr. will be at the helm of whatever success the Falcons have this season. The former No. 8 overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft started just three games for Atlanta last season but will enter 2025 as the team's unquestioned starter. Advertisement Despite Penix's lack of experience, former NFL quarterback-turned-analyst Robert Griffin III believes the Falcons quarterback is on the verge of a "breakout" season. Griffin, or "RGIII" as most know him as, noted Penix's arm talent and ability to stand in the pocket in the face of the pass rush. The former NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year believes these traits give Penix a solid foundation to build around as a quarterback. We've seen many great college quarterbacks struggle to adjust to the pass rush at the NFL level. Griffin noted Penix's impressive average of 17.3 yards per completion when under pressure last season. Griffin's comments come on the heels of praise also given by a former Falcons quarterback, Kurt Benkert, as he predicts Penix will break 5,000 all-purpose yards. Considering he isn't known for using his legs to get down field, a large portion of that would likely have to come through the air. Advertisement It's not just Penix's talent that has those around the NFL buying in. The young signal-caller's supporting cast should truly give him a chance to succeed this season. Drake London, Bijan Robinson and Darnell Mooney will present matchup problems for any opposing defense. Plus, fifth-year tight end Kyle Pitts is not someone to sleep on this season. Penix will be Pitts' fifth starting quarterback since joining the Falcons in 2021. So while a lot of people are quick to hammer the 24-year-old for not consistently putting up Pro Bowl numbers, having consistent quarterback play could be all he needs to succeed. Would Club World Cup Glory Make Up For Man City's Bad Season?
LINCOLN FINANCIAL FIELD, PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, UNITED STATES - 2025/06/18: Josep Guardiola, ... More head coach of Manchester City FC, looks on prior to the FIFA Club World Cup football match between Manchester City FC and Wydad AC. Manchester City FC won 2-0 over Wydad AC. (Photo by Nicolò Campo/LightRocket via Getty Images) Manchester City has so far avoided the upsets experienced by many of its European peers at the 2025 Club World Cup. While Chelsea suffered a 3-1 defeat to Flamengo and Paris Saint-Germain was toppled by Botafogo, Pep Guardiola's side coasted to a comfortable 2-0 win over Wydad in its opening fixture at the tournament. City can back this up with another victory over Al Ain on Sunday. Three points against the opponents from the United Arab Emirates would almost certainly secure its passage through to the Club World Cup quarter-finals with Manchester City among the favourites to go all the way and get its hands on the trophy. (Photo by Heuler Andrey/Eurasia) Guardiola is in the midst of a rebuild after a disappointing 2024/25 season. Manchester City was never a serious part of the Premier League title race and also suffered an early exit from the Champions League. The shock defeat to Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final compounded a dismal campaign by City's usual high standards. A glimpse of that rebuild was offered in the 2-0 win over Wydad when Rayan Cherki and Tijani Reijnders both started. Manchester City remains a work-in-progress, but has shown enough to suggest it could win the first expanded Club World Cup. According to Guardiola, though, this wouldn't make up for what unfolded last term. Head coach Pep Guardiola and Erling Haaland of Manchester City participate in the FIFA Club World ... More Cup USA 2025 Group G match between Manchester City and Wydad AC at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, US, on June 18, 2025. (Photo by Ayman Aref/NurPhoto via Getty Images) 'I said many times, the season was not good,' said Guardiola when asked about his Club World Cup aims. 'When you finish third in the Premier League to qualify for the Champions League, it means 70 teams were worse than us. We played the FA Cup final in an incredibly high level against a really good team. The disappointment was the Champions League, we did not do really good. It was tough to handle it. 'Winning this competition is not going to change that but my mindset at the moment is not about winning the competition. We can extend our time here, being here longer. For the South American teams, the competition may be the maximum. For European teams, it is [just] a World Cup.' Guardiola is right to point out that the true measure of his Manchester City rebuild won't be taken at the Club World Cup. Nonetheless, success this summer would point the team in the right direction again ahead of the 2025/26 season when City will be expected to compete in the Premier League and Champions League again. This could set the tone.

(Bradley Collyer/PA via AP) DUBLIN (AP) — England will debate the worth of taking Immanuel Feyi-Waboso on its Americas tour next month after the winger received a two-match suspension on Sunday. Feyi-Waboso was sent off during the England XV's 26-24 loss to a France XV on Saturday at Twickenham. Advertisement He caught Antoine Hastoy in the head with a swinging right arm in an attempted first-half tackle. His yellow card was upgraded on review to a 20-minute red card. A World Rugby disciplinary hearing confirmed it was a dangerous tackle and suspended Feyi-Waboso for both of England's tests in Argentina on July 5 and 12. He will be available for the test against the United States on July 19 in Washington, D.C., if he completes World Rugby's tackle school. Saturday's game was Feyi-Waboso's first action since December, when he dislocated his shoulder. He missed the Six Nations and a possible place in the British and Irish Lions squad.
