Time of India05-06-2025
Lucknow: The state rural livelihood mission (SRLM) under the rural development department has initiated the process of drawing up a blueprint for a project envisaging the collection of milk from all villages across 75 districts of UP under a coordinated market system.

The project envisions the replication of Balinee Milk Producer Company, a successful venture that started in the Bundelkhand region in 2019 under the Companies Act, 2013. Headquartered in Jhansi, the 'Milk Value Chain' project has been collecting milk from farmers, essentially women, in the Bundelkhand region. The project aims to safeguard the interest of member producers (exclusively women) by providing year-round access to organised markets in a fair and transparent manner, timely payment, capacity building and providing livestock support services to increase milk productivity, aiming for the social and economic empowerment of women dairy farmers, said officials.
Just like Balinee, the Samarth Milk Producer Company is collecting milk in Rae Bareli, Sultanpur, Pratapgarh, Ayodhya, Kanpur Nagar and Amethi districts. Similarly, Kashi Milk Producer Company is collecting milk in Ballia, Mirzapur, Sonbhadra, Ghazipur, Chandauli, Varanasi and Sant Ravidas Nagar. The Baba Gorakhnath Kripa Milk Producer Company is collecting milk in Gorakhpur, Maharajganj, Kushinagar and Deoria.
Srijani Milk Producer Company is collecting milk in Bareilly, Pilibhit, Sitapur, Lakhimpur Kheri, Shahjahanpur and Rampur through women groups.
SRLM sources said that around 2.64 lakh women milk farmers have been linked under the project in 4,961 villages across 31 districts of the state. SRLM mission director, Deepa Ranjan said that the remaining districts would soon be covered under the project.
She said that around 30,000 women of the groups reached the category of 'lakhpati didi' through producer companies. "These women farmers are collecting 7.1 lakh lt of milk daily, which the companies are selling in the market. This organised system has not only increased the income of women, but they are also ensuring a fair price," she said.
Sources said that the project will focus on setting up basic infrastructure such as bulk milk coolers (BMCs), testing equipment and reliable transport networks to prevent spoilage and ensure timely delivery.

Hindustan Unilever gets shareholders' nod for ice-cream business demerger

FMCG major HUL has received shareholders' nod to demerge its ice cream business, which owns brands like Kwality Wall's, Cornetto and Magnum, into an independent listed entity. With this, Hindustan Unilever Ltd (HUL) has taken one step closer to its goal to demerge its ice cream business. The majority of its shareholders have voted in favour of the resolution over the "Scheme of Arrangement between Hindustan Unilever Limited, Kwality Wall's", the FMCG major said while sharing the scrutiniser's report. "The Resolution for approval of the Scheme of Arrangement amongst HUL, Kwality Wall's (India) Ltd and their respective shareholders, as set out in the Notice dated 7th July 2025, has been passed by the Members by requisite majority, pursuant to Section 230(6) of the Companies Act, 2013, through remote e-voting and e-voting at the Meeting," it said. HUL has called for a meeting of its shareholders as per the directions of the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT). According to the report, 99.99 per cent of the votes polled were cast in favour of the proposal. The process was virtually conducted through a remote e-voting facility on Tuesday. Last month, the CFO of the company said he expects the demerger process to be completed in the current fiscal and subsequent listing of the new entity on the exchanges. All existing shareholders of the FMCG major will receive shares in the new entity in proportion to their shareholding in HUL in a ratio of 1:1. This demerger follows the decision of its global parent entity, Unilever's global separation from the ice-cream business. Parliamentary proceedings: Raising FDI limit for insurers to 100% will generate employment opportunities, says FM Sitharaman

The proposed raising of FDI limit in Indian insurance companies to 100% would bring more players into the market and generate employment opportunities, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman informed Parliament on Tuesday (August 12, 2025). Further, she said, "improved technologies and automation would lead to faster underwriting, claim processing leading to improved turnaround time thereby reducing cost and enhancing overall efficiency of the sector." The increase in FDI in Indian insurance companies from 74% to 100% was announced in the Union Budget on February 1, 2025. Parliament Monsoon Session Day 17 updates The Insurance Act, 1938 governs investment by insurers with a strong emphasis on safety, liquidity, and regulatory oversight by aligning investment by insurers with policyholder interests. The Act stipulates time, manner, form, conditions and instruments allowed for investment. Insurers are mandated to invest a specified percentage of funds in government securities and other approved securities as specified by Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI). "Additionally, the Act does not permit Indian insurance companies to invest any of their funds outside India. Hence, all the funds of insurance companies must be compulsorily invested in India," she said in a reply in the Rajya Sabha. In order to ensure financial stability in the insurance sector and protection of policyholders, she said, the Act further mandates every insurer to maintain at all times, an excess of assets over liabilities of not less than 50% of the minimum capital amount. Irdai further mandates insurers to maintain the control level of solvency of 150% at all times, she said. Further, in case of an insurer acting in a manner prejudicial to the policyholders' interests, Irdai is empowered by the Act to supersede the Board of such insurance company and appoint an Administrator to manage the affairs of the insurance company. Besides, she said, the regulatory oversight of the Irdai ensures transparency and policyholder protection by promoting fair business practices, solvency monitoring, supervision and efficient grievance redressal. As per the Companies Act, 2013, all insurance companies are board- governed entities and are required to be compliant with the Companies Act, 2013 at all times for all governance matters. This, alongside Indian Insurance Companies (Foreign investment) Rules, 2015 governs various aspects of operations including dividend payment, repatriation of profit and composition of Board of Directors for insurance companies. "All these provisions and mechanisms ensure adequate checks and balances for conduct of business of insurance in India and act as safeguards," she said. Replying to another question, Sitharaman said the maximum continuous tenure of directors of cooperative banks (excluding Chairperson and Whole-time Directors) has been extended from 8 to 10 years following the recent amendment in Section 10A (sub section 2a (i)) of the Banking Regulation Act 1949 (BR Act). This provision has come into effect from August 1, 2025, she added.
