Smoke warning as 70 firefighters tackle blaze

Yahoo17-05-2025

About 70 firefighters were tackling a large fire at an industrial building on the edge of a village.
Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue were called to an incident in Mill Lane, Whittlesford, south of Cambridge, at about 01:45 BST.
The fire service said it has deployed 10 engines and several specialist vehicles to the blaze, which measured about 40m by 60m (131ft by 196ft).
The service added that residents were advised to keep their doors and windows closed because of the smoke, especially those south of Mill Lane.
Crews from Cambridgeshire as well as the neighbouring counties of Suffolk, Hertfordshire and Essex attended the scene.
A spokesperson for the fire service said the blaze was contained but still burning and would continue to do so for some hours.
An investigation into its cause would take place once it was safe to do so, they added.

England's Reservoirs Drop Further After Driest Spring Since 1893

Reservoir levels across England fell far below the norm as the driest spring in more than a century raises further concerns about water supplies ahead of summer. Reservoirs were 77% full at the end of May compared with the long-term average of 93%, the UK's Environment Agency said. This spring was the UK's sunniest and warmest on record, and England's driest March-May period since 1893, the agency said. While wetter conditions have since provided some relief, it's unlikely to plug the deficit as extreme heat and more dry weather looms.
