US Army sergeant shot five soldiers at Georgia's Fort Stewart, official says

Few details were immediately available about what led to the gunfire, but the suspect is an army sergeant, according to a US official.
The official was not authorised to publicly discuss details of the investigation and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.
The army said it is investigating.
The injured were treated and then moved to Winn Army Community Hospital, base officials said in a Facebook post, adding there was no threat to the community.
Law enforcement was sent to the 2nd Armoured Brigade Combat Team complex shortly before 11am local time on Wednesday.
The gunman was arrested at 11.35am, officials said.
Fort Stewart was locked down for around one hour on Wednesday (Russ Bynum/AP)
The lockdown lasted about an hour, and three schools just outside the base took steps similar to a lockdown as well, 'out of an abundance of caution', the Liberty County School System said.
The lockdown lasted about an hour. After it was lifted, cars began to move through the normal security checkpoint at the fort's main gate.
The army's 2nd Armoured Brigade Combat Team was created in 2016 when the service added more than 200 vehicles to an infantry unit of roughly 4,200 soldiers.
Also known as the Spartan Brigade, the army has called the unit its 'most modern land fighting force'.
Located about 40 miles south west of Savannah, Fort Stewart is the largest army post east of the Mississippi River.
It is home to thousands of soldiers assigned to the army's 3rd Infantry Division and family members.
The fort's three elementary schools were also locked down, community superintendent Brian Perry told WTOC-TV.
The schools have nearly 1,400 students, according to the Department of Defence.
White House and Defence Department officials said President Donald Trump and Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth had been briefed on the shooting.
The FBI was at the fort to help investigate, said deputy director Dan Bongino.

Erin Patterson's chilling mushroom poison Facebook post before killing family

Prosecutors wanted to use digital records showing Patterson's post on a Facebook group about her cat eating a poisonous mushroom - despite her not having one - in her trial Mushroom killer Erin Patterson wrote a chilling Facebook post years before carrying out the triple murders of her family members, it has been alleged. ‌ Patterson, a convicted triple murderer, was found guilty in July of murdering three of her relatives, parents-in-law Don and Gail Patterson and Gail's sister Heather Wilkinson, and attempting to kill another with a beef Wellington she had laced with a toxic mushroom. Only Heather's husband Ian Wilkinson, a local pastor, survived, recovering after weeks of treatment following the horror dinner in Leongatha, in Victoria, Australia, on July 29, 2023. ‌ Details about the 50-year-old's alleged actions before the fateful day have now started emerging, including of one "so-called cat post" on Facebook written years beforehand. It comes after woman was jailed for leaving eight starving dogs to eat each other in hellhole flat. ‌ Patterson is alleged to have posted on the social media platform about her cat being poisoned after eating a dangerous mushroom in 2020, but she reportedly did not own a cat at the time. reports that she wrote about the animal "having a vomit" after rooting around in grassland near trees where she lived. She allegedly wrote: "My cat chewed on this mushroom just now. He is having a vomit. Was in grassland near trees, I'm in Victoria Australia." ‌ The post, details of which were aired during pre-trial hearings at the Supreme Court of Victoria, was alleged to have been made to a group named Poisons help: Emergency identification for mushrooms and plants. It was disclosed by prosecutors building a case against her as a means of proving she was trying to access information regarding the poisonous properties of mushrooms. The evidence was not ruled in, however, meaning prosecutors did not have the chance to add additional details showing she had never owned a cat, or that several photos of mushrooms attached to the post were located on an SD card recovered from her home. Prosecutors were barred from using the post and images by presiding Justice Christopher Beale. ‌ The judge found the post - made three years before the killings in 2023 - was too far separated from the circumstances of her crimes, meaning they were considered irrelevant. The post was among several digital records Judge Beale deemed inadmissable during the pre-trial hearings, with members of the press initially barred from reporting the details so Patterson's right to appeal could be preserved. The order was lifted today, with other allegations made about Patterson coming alongside the details about the "so-called cat post". Among others were allegations that she had tried to repeatedly kill her estranged husband previously using pasta, cookies she claimed were baked by her daughter and curry. Patterson was found guilty of using deathcap mushrooms to kill her husband Simon Patterson's relatives Don and Gail Patterson, both 70, and Gail's sister, Heather Wilkinson, 66, on July 7 following an 11-week trial.

But despite reports of a love affair, both Gibbon and Wyld, 33, denied to cops they were a couple. Polk County Sheriff's Office told The Sun the pair had been quizzed on the status of their relationship. A detective asked Gibbon and mum-of-two Wyld "about their relationship to determine if the incident would be classified as domestic violence". They both denied being in a romantic relationship, however. It comes after a family source told the Daily Mail how the pair had grown close after Gibbon split from his partner and Wyld split from his son Alex. The insider claimed: "Mark and Jasmine have been seeing each other for a few years, but they've never admitted it. "[The couple] do an awful lot together and they go away on holiday with the children a couple of times every year." Gibbon is divorced from his wife and lives alone at a £800,000 semi-detached home in Beaconsfield he purchased in 2023. Wyld - a hairdresser - separated from Gibbon's son Alex, 34, back in 2021. Just two years after they separated, Alex, 34, was jailed for trying to run over his dad in a £80,000 Porsche Cayenne in Beaconsfield, Bucks. As well as assaulting his father, Alex also pleaded guilty to harassing ex-wife Wyld. Alex was sentenced at Aylesbury Crown Court to 25 months in jail, a 36-month disqualification from driving, a five-year restraining order, plus a surcharge. The dad was released from jail around six months ago and went to move in with his mum, who had divorced Gibbon some years earlier. Alex and his father also became embroiled in a public row in 2023 after Alex left his dad's business for an unknown reason. The family source confirmed that Alex and Gibbon no longer speak. They added: "He feels an awful betrayal at how his dad has struck up a relationship with the mother of his two children." 6 Alex also pleaded guilty to harassing Wyld Credit: Facebook 6 Gibbon and Wyld have been pictured together on several occasions Credit: Facebook 6 Wyld claims Gibbon tried to drown her in Florida Credit: Facebook Gibbon - a lighting technician, who runs his own firm called MRG Lighting - is now being held in Polk County Jail and is due in court next week over the attempted murder charge levelled against him. He and Wyld were on holiday at the Solterra Resort in Devenport, near Disney World, Florida with Wyld's two children - Gibbon's grandkids. The reported couple started arguing over the "stipulations of his wilL" while by the pool, according to US police. Gibbon then pushed Wyld's head "under the water and held her down multiple times", the arrest affidavit claims. The mum told cops she "could not breathe and believed that she was going to drown". Police say Wyld was forced to "fight Mark in order to get away from him and from under the water but he kept pushing her back under". Her nine-year-old daughter then leapt to her mother's defence but was pushed away by Gibbon, it is claimed. Wyld is reported to have called out to two women in the distance and screamed at them to call 911. Gibbon now faces one count of attempted murder and two counts of battery. When questioned, Gibbon allegedly admitted to pushing Jasmine underwater, but insisted he hadn't been trying to drown her. The grandad is due in court on Monday.

Iconic UK seaside lido under-threat due to horror issue

Shoalstone Pool in Devon is one of the few remaining seawater pools in the UK, and has been open to the public since 1896 - but in recent weeks, locals have been left fuming One of the UK's most treasured seawater pools is under siege due to anti-social behaviour tarnishing the beloved spot for locals and tourists alike. ‌ The issue comes as an interactive map shows which areas of the UK are most blighted by anti-social behaviour. ‌ The beautiful Victorian swimming pool, located in another renowned 'fish town', sits at the sea's edge and is replenished by the high tide daily. It's even free to use. ‌ The lido is a gem in this Devon community, adored by tourists, but some individuals have been ruining the experience for others this summer season. Shoalstone Pool in Brixham is one of the few remaining sea pools of its kind in the country, nestled in a town also known for its bustling fishing industry, reports the Express. Since 1896, the public has enjoyed this seawater pool, established during the Victorian era when sea bathing became popular - thus, the birth of Shoalstone Seawater Pool. ‌ Fast forward to the present day, and you'll find the same magnificent outdoor pool stretching 53 metres, ideal for a summer's day. However, anti-social behaviour in and around the lido has left locals irate. At present, the lido is temporarily shut for unrelated reasons as the seawater pool undergoes essential repairs to preserve it for future generations. This has been made possible by a community fundraising effort in a 'Save Shoalstone from the Waves campaign'. Nevertheless, despite the lido remaining shut for refurbishment, antisocial behaviour has persisted around the restaurant which remains operational, with staff reporting fresh vandalism to the site this week. The troubles have been escalating for weeks. ‌ Several weeks back, pool manager David Thomas posted on Shoalstone Pool's Facebook page, revealing that incidents had been 'reported to the police' following 'yet more damage caused by local youths' at the picturesque Shoalstone Pool. He said: "If it's not verbally abusing our visitors they are damaging our property. ‌ "This and last week's incidents have been reported to Devon & Cornwall Police, we feel we are one step away from closing the pool for the season. "We cannot afford to keep fixing what these youths destroy and the offence caused - it will cost appx £500 to repair the fence." He added: "We've had a continuous problem this season so far. And they seem to be getting worse. We will prosecute this time if we catch them." ‌ Local tradesmen swiftly offered assistance to fix the damage at the time, yet this week the restaurant - situated adjacent to the pool and operated by the same staff - was allegedly hit by antisocial behaviour, prompting another Facebook statement from the Shoalstone team. The Facebook message said: "So sad to see this again and again, one day there will not be a restaurant or a pool for all to enjoy if this continues." The Brixham community and its visitors have reacted with a mix of support, anger, and disbelief to the recent post. ‌ One commenter, not a local but a frequent holidaymaker to Brixham, shared her fond memories of the pool, saying she 'enjoys holidays to Brixham and have had great times at the pool'. She added: "So sad and frustrating that this is happening, lawless Britain is affecting so many businesses and lives, I hope things improve." Another wrote: "The restaurant has a well known reputation for the quality of its food so it's sad to hear that the restaurant and staff are being targeted by a cadre of young people. ‌ "I hope with the support of local people and the police you can overcome these problems." Some branded the behaviour as 'disgusting' and said the culprits 'should be ashamed of themselves', while another pointed out they were 'spoiling it for everyone else'. Pool enthusiasts described Shoalstone Pool as a 'lovely free outdoor sea water swimming pool' with 'small changing rooms which are so handy'. ‌ Although currently closed until at least October 2025 for refurbishment, when open, the lido offers free entry with donations accepted to aid its maintenance. Many in the Brixham community feel 'so lucky' to have such a facility nearby, yet some seemingly fail to appreciate the privilege of having Shoalstone Pool so close. The team behind the pool clarified that the closure for renovation 'is not linked to the delinquent behaviour', as 'significant repair work' was already planned for the site. Community activities will still be taking place at the venue whilst work commences at Shoalstone Seawater Pool in Brixham, including complimentary morning yoga sessions. The Shoals Restaurant, boasting stunning sea views and situated adjacent to the pool, will also remain open for business as renovations to the lido kick off.
