T.N. textile industry seeks withdrawal of QCO on viscose fibre and yarn

The Hindu10-07-2025
The textile industry in Coimbatore, Tiruppur, and Erode regions have appealed to the Union government to withdraw Quality Control Order (QCO) on viscose staple fibre and viscose spun yarn.
The industry said viscose-based fibres are one of the most significant input materials in the textile sector, next only to cotton. Over 70% of viscose yarn produced by more than 80 spinning mills in India are woven on powerlooms in Tamil Nadu.
Since March 2023, imposition of QCO on imported VSF has restricted access to competitively-priced imported VSF from Indonesia, Thailand, and China due to delays in BIS licensing. Hence, Indian spinners are compelled to procure from a single domestic monopoly supplier, leading to increased input costs and limited supply terms. Imported VSF under FTA is cheaper by ₹25 a kg compared to domestic VSF, but the QCO nullifies this cost advantage.
This has severely hurt the cost structure of spinners and weavers, leading to a slowdown in production, closure of units, and sale of machinery as scrap.
A notification dated September 26, 2024 proposing to bring VSY under QCO is a further blow to the struggling sector. Imposing QCOs on VSY, especially amid existing raw material challenges, will result in supply disruptions, higher costs, and further job losses, the industry said.
The government should ensure raw material availability to boost textile exports, create jobs, and revive MSMEs in the textile sector.
'The weaving sector, especially in Tamil Nadu, is at a breaking point. We urge your ministry to act with urgency and empathy to protect millions of livelihoods dependent on this value chain,' the industry said.

From The Hindu, July 29, 1975: Cargo booking by Railways to Sri Lanka likely

Tiruchi, July 28: Cargo booking by the Indian and Sri Lanka railways through Rameswaram and Talaimannar is likely to be resumed shortly. Preliminary discussions in this connection between officials of the Sri Lanka Railways and the Southern Railway were held here to-day. Mr. V.T. Navaratne, General Manager, Mr. G.P.S. Weera Suriya, Operating Superintendent, and Mr. C. Nadarajan, Chief Commercial Superintendent of the Sri Lanka Railways, Mr. B. Natarajan, Chief Commercial Superintendent representing the General Manager of the Southern Railway and his colleagues participated in the discussions. The Emigration and Immigration Officers, Customs officials, Mr. Narayanaswamy of the Shipping Corporation of India, Mr. M.N. Balasubramanian, Divisional Superintendent, Southern Railway, Madurai Division also took part in the discussions. Following the cyclone in 1965 which blew off the Danushkodi pier, goods booking between the Indian and Sri Lanka Railways was suspended. While the booking of passenger traffic at Talaimannar and Rameswaram continued the Railways have not been booking cargo bound for Sri Lanka which are being routed through ships. At the conclusion of the discussions, Mr. Navaratne said that before 1965 Sri Lanka used to receive over 73,000 tonnes cargo every year by Railway booking. With just three hours for the streamer to cross the sea — a distance of 27 miles — there was very good booking from the southern districts of Tamil Nadu to Sri Lanka. The General Manager said, the pattern of cargo has now been completely changed and the Sri Lanka Railways was anxious to provide quick service for the movement of engineering and industrial goods from India to Sri Lanka through Railway booking.

Vietjet Bengaluru-Ho Chi Minh City daily service on the cards

Ho Chi Minh City: Flight travel between Bengaluru and Vietnam is set for a major boost with Vietjet, Vietnam's largest private carrier, planning to expand its Bengaluru (BLR) –Ho Chi Minh City (SGN) connection to daily service. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Currently, the airline operates four flights per week between the two cities. The airline is exploring this upgrade keeping in mind the increased interest being shown by Indian tourists, especially Bengaluru's high-spending tech crowd, in various exotic and offbeat destinations of Vietnam. "The response to our Bengaluru-Ho Chi Minh City route has so far been quite encouraging, and we may upgrade our current four-times-a-week service to a daily service in the future," Kieu Duong, Vietjet's international PR officer, told TOI on the sidelines of a tour at the picturesque port city of Vung Tau in Vietnam earlier this month. Tour operators have observed that Vietnamese cities like Ho Chi Minh City combine rich cultural attractions, such as the War Remnants Museum, Saigon Opera House, Independence Palace, and bustling Bến Thành Market, with affordability in accommodation, food, and sightseeing. The direct service connects Bengaluru to SGN in just about 4 hours and 40 minutes, with flyers no longer having to go through the hassles of taking connecting flights from other cities in India or from airports in Southeast Asia. Vietjet currently operates flights to six Indian cities – Bengaluru, New Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, and Kochi. The airline is not only looking to tap into rising passenger traffic on the India-Vietnam sector, but is also keen on offering flyers from India easy connectivity to destinations in Australia and Far Eastern and Southeast Asian cities, with Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi as transit hubs. "We're very optimistic about our India operations, and our target is to offer our guests an opportunity to enjoy a slice of Vietnam, while providing seamless connections to Australia, China and other destinations on our network," Kieu Duong added.
