DBKL shuts waste site, boosts monkey control after King's rebuke over Jalan Gallagher mess
The King had raised concerns about uncollected rubbish, clogged drains and the presence of wild monkeys along the road, prompting swift intervention from the local authority.
DBKL said it had ordered contractors SWCorp and Alam Flora to intensify cleaning work in the area and increase the frequency of waste collection.
'DBKL offers its deepest gratitude to His Majesty for his concern. DBKL is committed to ensuring the cleanliness, well-being, and comfort of city residents remain a priority through continuous monitoring and swift action with related agencies,' it said in a statement.
A temporary waste collection site identified as the main source of filth and monkey infestation has been ordered shut.
Cleaning teams have carried out drain flushing, roadside sweeping, tree pruning and removal of rotten branches, along with grass cutting and general landscape tidying.
DBKL is also introducing new, sturdier rubbish bins designed to withstand animal interference and will provide individual bins to households for direct waste collection.
The council said these measures aim to reduce exposed waste, which has been a key attractant for wild animals.
DBKL is working closely with the Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) to address the recurring monkey problem in the area.
Perhilitan previously installed traps near rubbish bins and official residences including Istana Negara, and will now expand trapping operations and patrols.

PETALING JAYA : Issues concerning national security, judicial appointments, and the ban on vaping were among the key topics discussed at the 269th Conference of Rulers meeting held at Istana Negara today. Keeper of the Rulers' Seal Syed Danial Syed Ahmad said the meeting was presided over by the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah. 'Today, the conference received the latest briefings on national security from Inspector-General of Police Khalid Ismail, and on national defence from armed forces chief Nizam Jaffar,' Bernama reported him as saying. Syed Danial said the meeting deliberated on judicial appointments to the Federal Court, the Court of Appeal and the High Court, as well as the appointments of the chief judge of Sabah and Sarawak, the Court of Appeal president, and the chief justice. 'The conference took note of the proposal to impose a complete ban on the sale and use of vape or electronic cigarettes in the country. 'Also tabled at the meeting were legal opinions from the 126th and 127th meetings of the National Council for Islamic Religious Affairs' muzakarah committee, along with resolutions from the 2025 special meeting of the committee,' he said. Syed Danial said the conference was briefed on the need for registration of marriages involving refugees and asylum seekers in Malaysia, as well as a Cabinet paper regarding a centralised policy on the management of seized and forfeited assets. Present at the meeting were Raja of Perlis Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail, Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Shah, Sultan of Kedah Al-Aminul Karim Sultan Sallehuddin Sultan Badlishah and Yang diPertuan Besar Negeri Sembilan Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir. Also in attendance were Tengku Mahkota of Kelantan Tengku Muhammad Fakhry Petra, Tunku Temenggong Johor Tunku Idris Iskandar Sultan Ibrahim and Tengku Arif Bendahara Pahang Tengku Muhammad Iskandar Ri'ayatuddin Shah. Governors Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar of Sarawak, Ali Rustam (Melaka), Musa Aman (Sabah) and Ramli Ngah Talib (Penang) also attended the meeting. Also present were chief ministers and menteris besar, including a representative of the Sarawak premier. Malaysian Bar president Ezri Abdul Wahab said about 1,600 Bar members took part in the walk, showing strong support from the legal community for urgent judicial reforms. PUTRAJAYA : The Malaysian Bar has called on the government to urgently address concerns over judicial independence and vacancies in the judiciary, but said it was not setting a specific deadline. Speaking after the Bar's 'Walk to Safeguard Judicial Independence' from the Palace of Justice to the Prime Minister's Office this afternoon, its president, Ezri Abdul Wahab, said the gathering was a reminder to the government that issues plaguing the judiciary must not be ignored. 'We are pleased to announce the success of the walk from the Palace of Justice to the PMO. 'All were united in our call to address the pressing concerns regarding the independence of the judiciary, particularly the ongoing vacancies, the need for institutional continuity, and a more transparent and accountable judicial process,' he told reporters. Ezri said about 1,600 Bar members had taken part in the walk, showing strong support from the legal community for urgent judicial reforms. He also said the Bar had submitted a memorandum to legal affairs department director-general Zamri Misman, who received it on behalf of the PMO. 'The director-general said he will deliver the memo to the prime minister,' he said. Asked about the contents of the memorandum, Ezri said it focused on the critical shortage of judges in the judiciary, which is affecting the administration of justice. 'We also asked for the judicial vacancies to be filled. The ongoing vacancies are worrying, and there are cases fixed as far as 2030. This will cripple court operations and negatively impact litigants,' he said. Ezri stressed that the Bar was not claiming that the judiciary was no longer independent, but cautioned that recent developments and public discourse may be undermining its integrity. 'We have seen a lot of media statements and talk on social media that could jeopardise the independence of the judiciary. We want that to be settled and are asking the government to resolve it as soon as possible. There is no timeframe,' he said. He also confirmed that there were no plans for another walk if the concerns raised were not addressed. 'No, this is it. This is just a reminder to the government. If not, other action will follow,' he said, adding that the Bar would discuss its next steps at its extraordinary general meeting on July 26. Among the notable figures spotted at the rally were former Bar presidents Ambiga Sreenevasan and Karen Cheah, PKR deputy president Nurul Izzah Anwar, PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan, Pendang MP Awang Hashim, former attorney-general Tommy Thomas and former Dewan Negara president Rais Yatim.

Don't speculate on top judicial appointments, says Selangor sultan

The sultan said the main items on the agenda for the 269th Conference of Rulers meeting included negotiating the appointment of the new chief justice, Court of Appeal president, chief judge of Sabah and Sarawak, as well as other superior court judges. He voiced his support for Istana Negara's statement last week reiterating that the constitution provides for the king to make appointments to these key roles in the judiciary on the advice of the prime minister and after consulting the rulers. 'The process that has been provided for under the Federal Constitution must be carried out transparently and carefully to preserve the rule of law and uphold the principle of justice, which is a core pillar of this nation. 'Therefore, all parties are urged to refrain from speculating and making negative accusations without first obtaining the complete and legitimate facts of a matter,' he said in a statement. The government came under criticism over delays in the appointment of senior judges following the retirement of the chief justice and Court of Appeal president, and impending vacancies in the superior courts. Chief Judge of Malaya Hasnah Hashim is serving as acting chief justice following the retirement of Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat, while Federal Court judge Zabariah Yusof became acting Court of Appeal president after Abang Iskandar Abang Hashim retired. Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak Abdul Rahman Sebli is set to retire this month.
