The Trump administration needs to get its story straight on mercury
But even as Health and Human Services focuses on measures such as removing thimerosal from all flu vaccines and testing infant formula for metal contamination, the Environmental Protection Agency under Administrator Lee Zeldin is working to weaken emission limits on methyl mercury, as well as arsenic, lead and other heavy metals, from coal power plants.
The EPA's action will increase mercury and other metals in our air, water and soil. As a result, this administration will increase, not decrease, kids' exposure to toxic metals. It's as if one hand doesn't know what the other is doing.
Recent events demonstrate this HHS versus EPA heavy metal incoherence.
On June 26, the newly appointed Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices voted 5-1 to recommend against flu vaccines containing thimerosal. Kennedy has long espoused the neurotoxicity of vaccine preservative thimerosal, which contains mercury derivative ethyl mercury.
The neurotoxic effects of methyl mercury, a different compound, are well-established, with the developing fetus at greatest risk. Ethyl mercury, in contrast, is broken down and excreted much faster than methyl mercury, and much less harmful. Numerous studies have found no association between thimerosal and autism, and autism rates continued to rise after thimerosal was removed from most vaccines in 2001. It is now present in a small percentage of flu vaccines.
Health and Human Services also launched Operation Stork Speed, which includes increased testing of infant formula and other foods children consume for heavy metals. This is important and valuable.
But removing contaminated formula and baby foods from the marketplace will not prevent them from becoming contaminated. That can only be done by reducing the release of metals into our environment in the first place.
The leading source of methyl mercury pollution in the U.S. coal combustion. From smokestacks, it makes its way into water bodies and fish we eat, thus necessitating limits on fish consumption during pregnancy.
Coal combustion also releases other heavy metals, such as lead, arsenic and chromium, which end up in soil, rice, apples and, ultimately, baby food and infant formula.
A 2024 rule revised the Mercury and Air Toxics Standards, strengthening limits on emission of mercury and other harmful metals from coal-fired power plants. On June 11, the EPA proposed to repeal the 2024 revised standards.
In its Regulatory Impact Analysis, EPA estimates that repeal of the 2024 Mercury and Air Toxic Standards will, in 2028, increase methyl mercury emissions by about 1,000 pounds, and non-mercury harmful metals by approximately 14,000 pounds, relative to keeping the 2024 standards in place.
More metal emissions from power plants ultimately means more metals in formula and baby food. Secretary Kennedy knows this.
This administration claims to care about child toxic exposures on the one hand, but it is working to actually increase toxic pollution on the other. This administration should align around the Health and Human Services promise of protecting children from harmful metals by retaining the 2024 Mercury and Air Toxics Standards.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) said on Tuesday that children ages 6 months to 23 months should receive a COVID-19 vaccine, in contrast with federal health officials. The recommendations are part of the AAP's annual childhood immunization schedule, which includes guidance for COVID, flu and RSV vaccines for those aged 18 and younger. The AAP has been releasing its own recommendations since the 1930s, but in a rare occurrence, the recommendations differ from those put out by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The group also recommended Americans age 18 and under receive a COVID vaccine if they are at high risk of severe COVID, live in a long-term care facility or congregate setting, if they have never been vaccinated against COVID or if they live with someone at high risk for severe COVID. It comes after Health and Human Services secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced in late May that the CDC would no longer recommend the COVID vaccine for healthy children. The CDC, which is under Kennedy's purview, later updated the guidance to a " shared clinical decision making" model -- leaving the decision to vaccinate children to parents alongside advice from a doctor. The prior recommendations were that everyone aged 6 months and older get vaccinated against COVID with the most up-to-date shot. The contrasting vaccine recommendations highlight the growing rift between federal health officials and medical organizations on vaccine policy. "The academy has been making pediatric immunization recommendations since the 1930s, that has not changed," Dr. Susan J. Kressly, president of the AAP, told ABC News. "But what has changed is that this year, we're doing it in the environment of misinformation, which makes it more important than ever that we provide clear and confident guidance, because the majority of American families really depend on us for this guidance." Children between 6 months old and 23 months old are at the highest risk of severe COVID-19, and the vaccine can protect against serious illness, according to the AAP. "We know that this age group, that's the highest risk for severe disease," Kressly said. "And so we want to make sure that those children who are at highest risk and did not live through the pandemic -- they were not exposed to COVID viruses during the pandemic -- we want to make sure that they are protected as best as possible." Although medical organizations may differ in their vaccine recommendations, insurers often rely on the CDC's vaccine panel, known as the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), recommendations to determine what they will and won't cover. If certain vaccines aren't recommended by the ACIP, it may lead to parents or guardians facing out-of-pocket costs if their children receive the shot. It could also mean the shots aren't covered by the Vaccines for Children (VFC) program, a federally funded program that provides no-cost vaccines to eligible children. "We need to work with our like-minded policy makers who understand the importance of keeping VFC vaccines available in every community for those children who depend on them," Kressly said. "At the same time, there are children in this country whose vaccines are paid for through commercial insurance, and we are having continuing conversations with major payers to make sure that those can be vaccines are available as well. Vaccination is part of high-quality preventive care, and we are confident that we can work with the payers to make sure that translated into policy."

Florida surgeon general says raw milk has health benefits. Experts say he's wrong
Florida law says it's illegal to sell raw milk for human consumption, but that's not stopping some of the state's top officials from supporting residents who want to drink it. Some have even made a complete 180, from promoting pasteurized milk to promoting consumer freedom within days. "Florida Commissioner of Agriculture Wilton Simpson and the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) are encouraging Floridians to protect their health by only consuming pasteurized milk products," the press release says. 'Florida's pasteurized milk supply is safe, nutritious, and closely controlled from the farm to your local grocery store,' Simpson said in the release. 'There have been no reported illnesses from pasteurized milk products in Florida, so Floridians should continue to buy and enjoy nutritious and wholesome dairy products from Florida farmers.' As previously reported earlier this month, 21 people got sick and seven were hospitalized for bacterial infections, including E. coli, from drinking raw milk from Keely Farms Dairy in New Smyrna Beach. Raw milk: OK as pet food in Florida Raw milk can be sold as pet food in Florida, but it must be clearly labeled "not for human consumption." the Keely Farms' webpage did not mention pets. Six of the infected people were children under age 10, the Florida Department of Health said. The cases were all in Central and Northeast Florida. According to the CDC, improperly handled raw milk is responsible for nearly three times more hospitalizations than any other food-borne disease source. And so far in 2025, there have been seven recalls or outbreaks from raw milk in the United States.
