Mithun Chakraborty Claims Trinamool "Planned" The Bengal Files Trailer Halt: "In Bengal, FIRs Are Distributed Like Kurmura"
Filmmaker Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri's directorial The Bengal Files, which focuses on the events of the Direct Action Day and the 1946 Calcutta killings, has landed in controversy even before its release.
Actor-turned-politician Mithun Chakraborty discussed the controversy surrounding the trailer launch of The Bengal Files in Kolkata, expressing surprise at the entire ruckus without even watching the film. He also blamed the ruling party in the state, saying everything was "planned".
Speaking to ANI, he said, "Everything was planned, but it was so surprising to me, without even seeing the trailer, without even seeing anything, they are opposing it for what? To face the truth? So, that is the problem. Nothing else."
On August 18, during a press conference in Delhi, the filmmaker revealed that "FIRs have been filed by ruling party members" on the makers.
Speaking about it, the Disco Dancer actor added, "In Bengal, FIRs are distributed like kurmura (puffed rice). Agar TMC ka koi chota-mota bhi hoga na, police station mein jayega FIR karo bolega, (police) kar dega. So, it was like that. So, never mind. If the FIR has been done, he (Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri) will fight it back. No problem".
The film explores the communal violence in undivided Bengal during the 1940s, including events like the 1946 Direct Action Day and the Noakhali riots of 1946.
Chakraborty lashed out at the critics, saying, "Everybody is scared of the truth. That is the thing," adding that the young generation should know about the truth.
"It's 1947, even before my birth, which we don't know about. The next generation should know about it what happened during Noakhali or (know) about the great Calcutta killings... What happened... We read a line... What happened? You don't want to know the truth?" he said.
The Bengal Files also features Anupam Kher, Darshan Kumar, and Pallavi Joshi. It is focused on the events of the Direct Action Day, aiming to unveil the "most brutal chapter" of Indian history.
A ruckus erupted during the release of The Bengal Files trailer in Kolkata on August 16.
Agnihotri said during the press meet, "I am discovering the political scenario. I had thought how anybody could stop the trailer, but when we went to Kolkata, the multiplex refused to show the trailer after all the permissions in writing.
"Then, the hotel chain stopped showing the trailer. The police came..cut the wrire then I was told that the ruling party filed many FIRs as we stand here today, the FIRs are filed on us by the ruling party members and I have been told that ruling party has major objection on portrayal untold story of Hindu genocide. They have a problem with that film about demographic change."
The Bengal Files is slated to hit theatres on September 5, 2025.

Thane city to soon see launch of pod taxi project: Minister
1 2 Thane: Transport minister Pratap Sarnaik on Wednesday announced plans to lau-nch the pod taxi project in Thane city, describing it as an environmentally friendly and economical transportation system that would complement the Metro network. Speaking at a development review meeting at the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) auditorium, Sarnaik said the groundbreaking ceremony for the project would be conducted after completing legal formalities. The proposed pod taxi network will span 52km with an estimated 63 stations. The fare structure has been kept affordable at Rs 30 per person per stage. "Legal approvals for passenger safety, financial viability assessment, and other formalities need to be completed before launching the project on PPP basis," Sarnaik said. "Such announcements seem to be mere eyewash," said an activist, pointing out that Thane city is still grappling with basic infrastructure issues like poor roads, flooding, water issues, and traffic chaos. "These kinds of promises are usually made only before elections," the activist added. Another resident questioned, "Where will they accommodate the pod taxis when we have Metro and Ring Rail coming up?" During the review meeting with TMC commissioner Saurabh Rao and other officials, Sarnaik also announced a ban on heavy commercial vehicles on Ghodbunder Road from 6am to midnight to reduce traffic congestion on the busy arterial route, and suggested diverting cargo traffic through the Bhiwandi route. He also recommended maximising tree plantation while developing the Nanglabunder creek area to expa-nd Thane's forest cover, and setting up a rehabilitation centre for stray dogs outside the city limits. The minister said that development works worth Rs 1,800 crore were sanctioned for TMC under the guidance of deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde, who was chief minister when the funds were approved. "Most of these development projects are progressing well, and Shinde expressed his intention to inaugurate the majority of works by Oct 15," Sarnaik said. He directed the officials and staff to work round the clock to complete the remaining projects. Sarnaik also instructed that service roads along Ghodbunder Road be linked with the main carriageway by Dec 31, by cement concretising the open spaces in the middle of the road. The minister also announced that Thane's third theatre would be constructed in the Ghodbunder area. Thane already houses Gadkari Rangayatan and Dr Kashinath Ghanekar auditoriums. At the review meeting, Sarnaik also assessed the progress of several ongoing projects, including the mangrove park at Mogharwada, beautification of the lake at Kasarwadavli, renovation of old gardens, and scientific revival of wells in Thane city. Bengaluru: The assembly Thursday passed a bill aimed at providing welfare measures for migratory shepherds and safeguarding them from atrocities, fulfilling a promise made by chief minister Siddaramaiah , who hails from the community, in the 2024-25 state budget. The legislation carries strict penal provisions. Denying shepherds access to public or govt land (excluding reserve forests) without lawful grounds will invite a one-year jail term and Rs 1 lakh fine, while preventing access to public resorts carries a two-year jail term with the same fine. Verbal abuse or intentional insults can attract six months to five years in prison and a Rs 1 lakh fine. Public servants who neglect duties and cause financial loss to shepherds will be punished under civil service rules. Over a hundred shepherds had staged a protest at Freedom Park Tuesday, pressing the govt to introduce a long-pending law aimed at safeguarding their rights and welfare. Animal husbandry minister K Venkatesh, who tabled The Karnataka Traditional Migratory Shepherds (Welfare Measures and Protection Against Atrocities) Bill, 2025, said: "The community even suffers from thieves who target their sheep. There are instances where they have been beaten up for entering grassland to graze sheep. Apart from protecting them from such attacks, the bill also ensures welfare schemes for them. " He said about 1,500 shepherds have been identified and 5,000 registered so far. "More enrolments are expected as the proposed legislation provides a proper mechanism for formal registration," he said. The bill provides for the creation of a Traditional Migratory Shepherds Welfare Fund and Board, on the lines of the Construction Workers Welfare Board. A fee from purchasers of sheep and goats in authorised markets will be pooled into the fund, managed by a govt-nominated board chairman. Welfare measures include affordable housing, land grants, health insurance, scholarships, food security, livestock vaccination, treatment and animal insurance. PM Modi To Unveil Rs 5,200 Crore Projects In Bengal Today Amid TMC Protests
Kolkata: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit West Bengal on Friday to unveil a string of infrastructure projects worth over Rs 5,200 crore and address a public rally in Dum Dum near here in a politically charged backdrop marked by TMC's protests over alleged harassment of Bengali-speaking migrants in several states. The prime minister will arrive in Dum Dum on the northeastern fringe of Kolkata from Bihar and first participate in the inauguration of three new Kolkata Metro projects before addressing the party rally, a senior BJP leader said. The tour comes amid a row over constitutional amendment bills about the removal of the prime minister, chief ministers and ministers after arrest on serious criminal charges. TMC supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has branded the proposed legislation as "autocratic", a step "more than a super-Emergency" that will "finish" the independence of the judiciary. On Wednesday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah introduced three Bills in the Lok Sabha to this effect, triggering uproar from the Opposition before the draft laws were referred to a Joint Committee of Parliament. "I am eager to be among @BJP4Bengal Karyakartas at a rally in Kolkata. With each passing day, public anger against the TMC is increasing. West Bengal is eagerly looking towards the BJP with hope because of our development agenda," Narendra Modi posted on X. Tomorrow's programmes in the city are mainly focused on connectivity. The chief minister has decided to skip the inauguration of the three new Kolkata Metro projects that the Prime Minister will unveil. "The decision was taken in the backdrop of harassment faced by migrants from Bengal in several BJP-ruled states," a senior TMC leader said. Against this backdrop, the BJP expects the Prime Minister to use his Bengal visit to sharpen the party's counter-narrative, projecting development and infrastructure growth in contrast to what it calls the TMC's "politics of appeasement and identity mobilisation". Banerjee and her party have in recent weeks accused BJP-ruled states such as Assam, Odisha, Delhi, Maharashtra and Gujarat of detaining and profiling Bengali-speaking migrants, alleging that they are being branded as "illegal Bangladeshis". The TMC has sought to turn this into a Bengali identity plank, a strategy that helped it blunt the BJP's Hindutva pitch in the 2021 assembly elections. On the development front, Modi will inaugurate a 13.61 km-long metro network in Kolkata, marking the first time in 41 years that the city's metro services will directly connect the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport with the rest of the city. He will flag off the Noapara-Jai Hind Bimanbandar metro service from Jessore Road station and undertake a ride on the route. Through video conferencing, he will also launch the Sealdah-Esplanade metro service, slashing travel time between the two points from nearly 40 minutes to just 11 minutes, and the Beleghata-Hemanta Mukhopadhyay section, which will bolster connectivity to the IT hub. A newly constructed subway at Howrah Metro Station will also be inaugurated. In addition, the Prime Minister will lay the foundation stone for a 7.2 km six-lane elevated Kona Expressway project worth over Rs 1,200 crore. The expressway is expected to significantly cut travel time between Howrah and the surrounding rural areas, and Kolkata, providing a major boost to trade, commerce and tourism. The BJP's Bengal unit is banking on Modi's rally in Dum Dum to energise its cadres ahead of the electoral battle in 2026, while the TMC is expected to sharpen its attack on what Banerjee has termed the "double assault" of migrant profiling and constitutional overreach.
