Sask. police watchdog investigating after man dies in Deschambault Lake RCMP shooting

Saskatchewan's Serious Incident Response Team is investigating an RCMP shooting near Deschambault Lake that left one man dead. Police say just before 9 a.m. Friday, two Deschambault RCMP officers encountered five people in a wooded area near Deschambault Lake, about 400 kilometres northeast of Saskatoon. A confrontation occurred between the two officers and a man in the group, and the officers fired their guns, hitting the man, a Saturday news release from RCMP said. The officers tried to give the man medical assistance, but he died at the scene, RCMP say. Police say his family has been notified. They did not release his name or age. Neither of the officers were injured. Police say they seized a gun and several replica guns at the scene, and arrested the four other people. Two were later released without charges. A 31-year-old man from Pelican Narrows was charged with recklessly discharging a firearm. He was also arrested on an outstanding warrant related to a different investigation from July by Deschambault Lake RCMP. A 20-year-old woman from Deschambault Lake was also charged for breach of an undertaking, which police say was linked to the same July investigation. Both people will appear in court on August 11. The Serious Incident Response Team — the civilian-led provincial police watchdog agency, which is responsible for investigating serious incidents involving police in the province — has been notified of the incident by RCMP, and is investigating the circumstances of the shooting, Saturday's news release said.
