Nico O'Reilly 'taking his opportunity'

Nico O'Reilly 'taking his opportunity'

BBC News19-04-2025

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola talking to BBC Match of the Day: "It was massively important. We have three games at home and two away. They are tough games. Stefan Ortega saved the balls that he needed too and the players made a step up in the second half. We were more incisive. I'm really pleased with the game we made in the second half. The players performed really well, all of them."On Nico O'Reilly: "He's not really a left-back. I would say all of our left-backs score, Josko Gvardiol before and now Nico. He is an attacking midfielder. We have passes, passes and passes and then we can arrive brilliantly into that position. He's arrived from the academy and is helping us a lot. I am more than grateful. He is taking his opportunity."On whether O'Reilly has grown in confidence and mentally in the past few months: "For sure. He can improve, he is young. But when you play every day and you're playing it is because you can do it. Our fans love him because they love academy players. He is another player that can help us."On whether the players are motivated: "We are fourth now. This week is massively important. Goodison Park, at home to Villa and then the FA Cup semi-final. To start winning the game and especially how we played in the second half is really important."

Andy Robertson makes decision on leaving Liverpool for Atletico Madrid

Andy Robertson's stance on leaving Anfield has been revealed with Atletico Madrid determined to sign the Liverpool legend. An ever-present for the Reds since signing from Hull City in 2017 for just £8.5million, Robertson is considered one of the Premier League's greatest defenders. The left-back's trophy cabinet includes two Premier League titles, the Champions League, the FA Cup and the Club World Cup. After blossoming under Jurgen Klopp, the Scotland captain continued to perform well under Arne Slot last season, though his offensive influence dropped significantly, recording no goals and just two assists in 45 appearances. Liverpool have been looking at long-term replacements for the 31-year-old and appear to have found their man, with Milos Kerkex expected to join from AFC Bournemouth. As a result, Robertson's future at Anfield is up in the air, especially as he's entered the final year of his contract. It has now been reported by various outlets that Atletico have made Robertson a top target, with Diego Simeone needing a new left-back. Reinildo and Cesar Azpilicueta are both out of contract this summer and the Madrid club recently dropped their interest in AC Milan's Theo Hernandez. More Trending And, according to Fabrizio Romano, Robertson is indeed keen on joining the La Liga giants who are currently in the USA for the revamped Club World Cup, and talks over a transfer have already begun. Simeone has targeted several notable Premier League stars over the past few years, signing Azpilicueta and Conor Gallagher from Chelsea and Julian Alvarez from Manchester City Should he make the move, the Scot will directly come up against his former Reds teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold who has just completed his transfer to Real Madrid. Earlier this week, Robertson said there had been positive talks with Liverpool over his future, but he is still unclear what is ahead for him. 'We've had good discussions, me and the club, but what the future holds, I'm not sure,' he told Sky Sports. 'All I know is I fly off on holiday and it's well needed. I need a rest after a long season, and then I look forward to pre-season. That's all my focus is. 'I know the position I'm in, I know I've only got a year left. A lot's getting spoken about it, a lot's getting said, but my pure focus is focussing on being a dad for the next couple of weeks and enjoying that time with the kids.' Read the full quotes here. Man Utd set sights on two Bryan Mbeumo alternatives after huge Tottenham bid

Manchester United want to make Bryan Mbeumo their second summer signing but the Red Devils have alternative targets with Tottenham now in the race for the forward Manchester United will not pay over the odds for Bryan Mbeumo after Tottenham entered the race for the Brentford forward and have other targets within the Premier League, it has emerged. The Red Devils have been proactive in trying to strengthen their playing squad off the back of a horrendous 2024-25 campaign, signing Wolves ' Matheus Cunha and making an early move for Mbeumo. ‌ Their pursuit of the sought-after Cameroon star has been complicated by Tottenham, though, with Thomas Frank keen to make Mbeumo his marquee summer signing after swapping Brentford for Tottenham earlier this week. ‌ Mirror Football revealed that Spurs have since tabled a bid worth £70million for the Bees talisman; a proposal which is significantly more than United's previous £55m offer. And while Mbeumo wants to join Manchester United ahead of all others this summer, ESPN report that the club will not exceed a certain price point for the former Troyes man and that they have alternative targets in mind. Eberechi Eze and Antoine Semenyo have both been linked to United already this summer and would come into the club's thinking if a deal for Mbeumo does prove to evade them. Eze, the Crystal Palace playmaker, is another player who has no shortage of admirers after punctuating another stellar season at Crystal Palace with a match-winning display in the FA Cup final. It's understood that Eze has a £68m release clause in his contract at Selhurst Park, putting him in a similar price bracket as Cunha and Mbeumo. ‌ Join the debate! Will Mbeumo be a Man Utd player next season? Let us know here Semenyo has also had a fine season, registering 11 goals and five assists in the Premier League. Intriguingly, the Ghana international is also of interest to Spurs. Bournemouth are thought to value Semenyo at around £70m, though they may not need to cash in on another of their top-tier talents with Dean Huijsen already sold and Milos Kerkez and Illya Zabarnyi likely to follow in the coming weeks. ‌ While United have alternative targets in mind, they are expected to try and push through a deal for Mbeumo given the player has made no secret of his desire to make the move. United ranked among the Premier League's lowest scorers last term with only the bottom three and Everton failing to better their tally of 44 strikes.

England Under 21 star REJECTS Burnley offer to join former Man United star at European giants

Defender CJ Egan-Riley has joined Marseille after rejecting a new contract at Burnley. The 22-year-old played a key role in the Clarets' promotion to the Premier League but has chosen to make the switch to Ligue 1. Marseille announced the signing on Saturday after Egan-Riley passed a medical, and he will link up with his new club following the conclusion of England's campaign at the European Under 21 Championship. Burnley revealed earlier this week that Egan-Riley had rejected a 'significant long-term contract' at Turf Moor. His performances in the Clarets' record-breaking defence put him firmly on the radar and earned him a place in the 2024-25 Championship team of the season. Egan-Riley began his career with Manchester City but moved to Burnley in the summer of 2022 and spent time on loan at Hibernian and PSV Eindhoven before forcing his way into Scott Parker 's line-up. The French side are managed by former Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi, and were 2024-25 Ligue 1 runners-up, securing qualification for next season's Champions League.
