The JAWS Sequel That Almost Became a Ridiculous Comedy Called JAWS 3, PEOPLE 0 — GeekTyrant

The Jaws franchise took a nosedive after Steven Spielberg's original masterpiece. Jaws 2 played it safe. Jaws 3-D tried a gimmick, and Jaws: The Revenge ... well, that one had a shark hunting a specific family out of spite. But in an alternate timeline, the third Jaws movie could've gone completely off the rails!
It almost became a full-blown comedy.
Right after Jaws 2 , producers Richard Zanuck and David Brown were looking for a fresh angle. Audiences were already saturated with knockoffs with films like Grizzly , Orca , Tentacles , and so on. Horror was inching into satire territory, and Zanuck and Brown had just seen Universal score big with National Lampoon's Animal House . So they thought, why not lean into that energy?
Enter Matty Simmons of National Lampoon. In the 2023 documentary Sharksploitation , Simmons recalled the surreal moment this all started:
'I was over at Universal. My next-door neighbors were Dick Zanuck and David Brown. First thing [Brown] said to me was, 'Dick and I would love to make a movie with you guys.' So, out of the blue — I just started kidding around — I just said, 'Jaws 3, People Nothing.'
'I said, 'Peter Benchley walks out of his house in a bathing suit, jumps into his pool, and disappears. And the next thing we see a fin floating around in the pool.' ... He said, 'I love it, I love it, I'll call you tomorrow. We're going to make this movie.''
That joke pitch turned into actual momentum. Writers Tod Carroll and a then-unknown John Hughes were brought on to write the script. Joe Dante, hot off his Piranha spoof, was offered the director's chair, thanks in part to Steven Spielberg himself stepping in to stop Universal from suing over Piranha.
As Dante explained:
'Universal was very concerned and annoyed that Roger was putting out his rip-off of Jaws the same year that Jaws 2 was coming out, and so, they apparently threatened an injunction.
'I discovered much later that Spielberg had stepped in ... and said, 'No, you don't get it, this is a spoof, this isn't really a rip-off,' although it is a rip-off. And we basically got away with it, I guess is the phrase. And because of that, I was offered Jaws 3, People 0.'
Sets were under construction, mechanical sharks were being built. Bo Derek was even circling the cast. It was happening… until it wasn't.
The project fell apart. No one's totally sure why. Some point to Spielberg, others to the producers losing their nerve. But Dante believes it came down to creative differences between the Lampoon crew and the Jaws producers:
'The National Lampoon people wanted to make an R-rated comedy, like Animal House. And the more conservative Zanuck and Brown team wanted to make a PG and have it be a wide-release family picture ...
' I think the project died because they just couldn't agree on what movie they were making. And you can't go into a movie with two entities as powerful as National Lampoon was at that time and Zanuck and Brown and have them fighting constantly through the entire movie. It's just a bad idea, and I think they just pulled the plug.'
Simmons put it even more bluntly:
'They had to choose between me and Spielberg, and I suspect they made the right choice.'
Looking back, Jaws 3, People 0 feels like one of those legendary 'what-if' projects, something that might have bombed spectacularly or become a cult classic. The horror genre eventually embraced self-parody, but in 1983, this kind of meta-comedy was still uncharted waters.
Would it have worked? Who knows. But a Jaws spoof written by John Hughes, directed by Joe Dante, and produced by the Animal House team is something we'd absolutely pay to see.
If Universal ever wants to revive Jaws with a fresh angle, maybe it's time to bring back the one idea that was just too wild for 1983: a sequel that bites back with a smile.

Ryan Seacrest Shares Rare Family Photos as Both of His Parents Battle Cancer

Ryan Seacrest Shares Rare Family Photos as Both of His Parents Battle Cancer originally appeared on Parade. Ryan Seacrest may be referred to as "the hardest-working man in show business," but his ultimate "happy place" isn't on TV or radio, it's with his family — especially as both of his parents fight cancer. Taking to Instagram for a rare look inside his personal life, the Wheel of Fortune host, 50, shared a photo with his sister, Meredith Seacrest Leach, her husband, Jimmy Leach, and their 6-year-old daughter — Ryan's beloved niece — Flora. The second snap in his Saturday, August 2, post featured him and Flora looking at each other lovingly inside of a car. While the longstanding American Idol host didn't reveal the location of the pictures, the family appeared to be at a vineyard. "My happy place looks a lot like this," Ryan gushed in the caption of the carousel. Though the Live With Kelly and Ryan alum has spent decades coming into our homes — whether it's through Idol, Wheel, Dick Clark's Rockin' New Year's Eve, his radio show, every red carpet he's ever hosted or any other entertainment venture — Ryan tends to keep his own personal life close to the vest. Which is why it was so emotional last month when he let fans know that both of his parents — Gary and Connie Seacrest — have been battling cancer. Ryan told his On Air With Ryan Seacrest viewers that his dad, who has been privately battling prostate cancer for years, "started his treatment and he — it didn't get better. It got worse and it spread. It didn't go well for him.' Meredith called her brother during a live segment of American Idol earlier this year to tell him their father was in intensive care at the hospital. When Ryan arrived, the family had to make a "life or death" decision. View this post on Instagram A post shared by On Air with Ryan Seacrest (@onairwithryan) 'She said, 'Dad is in the ICU' and 'How fast can you get here?'' Ryan shared. 'I didn't even remember what I was saying while I was on the show. I said 'Goodnight,' and I went to the airport immediately and got on a flight [to Atlanta].' Fortunately, he said, his father survived the pneumonia that nearly cost him his life. Now, Ryan noted, "We have to go back into another treatment and fight this cancer. 'It's difficult. ... The treatments suck. The treatments are tough. But I know he's gonna get through this.' Meanwhile, Ryan needed to also make sure that his mother — who is in remission from her own cancer, he revealed — was OK. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Ryan Seacrest (@ryanseacrest) 'I needed her to take a break,' he said, which is why he took over part of his father's care in Atlanta. On July 20, Ryan's parents sent him a hopeful photo of them at the beach. He cried. "They just wanted to look at the water. They can't do much. But I saw him smile. I saw my mom smile," he recalled. "I'm embarrassed to – I'm just emotional. I am so – anyway, I watched them over the weekend, [they sent] photos of smiling and happiness, and being together. They've been married for over 55 years, and they've got each other." There are few absolutely perfect comedies. In some ways, making a comedy movie is harder than any other genre, especially as the years pass and any particular references start to feel more and more stale. That's what makes Clueless feel a little bit like a miracle. This Amy Heckerling classic, which is turning 30 this year, is one of the best comedies ever made, and an absolute must-watch whether you've seen it 30 times or never before. An adaptation of Jane Austen's Emma set in Beverly Hills in 1995, the movie is both totally of its time and utterly timeless. Here are three reasons it's worth checking out: It's so, so funny The best reason to watch Clueless is because it is one of the funniest scripts ever written. Heckerling, who wrote the film in addition to directing it, made Alicia Silverstone's Cher an instantly iconic character. Silverstone's Cher is a privileged popular girl, but she's textured to be something more engrossing, which makes her funnier. Recommended Videos It's different than the stereotypes you might be expecting. Every minute of this movie has a great joke in it, and you're going to catch and laugh at different ones every time. 'I thought they declared peace in the Middle East.' If only, Cher. It's a lush, beautiful movie Comedy movies typically don't get the kind of directorial flair that you might find in more serious projects, but Clueless is the perfect marriage of laughs and craft. The movie's iconic costuming — you can probably picture several outfits from the movie without thinking that hard — is just an exaggeration of how kids were actually dressing at the time. The colors themselves are also incredibly vibrant, creating a version of Beverly Hills that feels like a middle ground between utter fantasy and the dreariness of something more realistic. It's genuinely moving Perhaps the most surprising thing about Clueless is that the movie manages to land all of its emotional moments. Cher's character arc is a relatively small journey. Cher goes from being slightly narcissistic to caring a little bit more about other people and the world in general. What's crucial to the movie's success is that lack of 'bad guys.' All of these characters are just young people trying to figure out how to get through their lives and high school without totally falling apart. Cher's realization that she's in love with her stepbrother is cute and represents a moment when she finally figures out what she wants out of her life. It's a lovely moment, and one that Silverstone and Paul Rudd totally sell. You can watch Clueless on Netflix.

Pat McAfee calls out 'bum a-- suits' at ESPN while congratulating network's WWE deal

Pat McAfee is happy to see ESPN and the WWE get a historic deal done to broadcast premium live events. But the ESPN host called out some employees within his own company in the process. McAfee posted on X congratulating ESPN and WWE on finalizing a deal, which was announced Wednesday. "Great to see 2 powerhouses of sports and entertainment come together," McAfee wrote before taking his shot. "I assume all the mid level, powerless, bum a--suits at ESPN will attempt to muddy this somehow (out of context leaks/ignorant anonymous opinions/etc.) but, in the end.. this agreement will outlive the dinosaurs currently guarding desks in Bristol and this deal will be great for ESPN. "Cheers to the future." McAfee has had issues in the past with ESPN executives, which could've led to his jab. He accused Norby Williamson on air, saying the longtime executive tried to "sabotage" his show in 2024. Williamson ended up moving on to FanDuel Sports Network after spending 40 years at the "Worldwide Leader in Sports." The WWE-ESPN deal has been reported to be worth $1.6 billion over five years. This will allow ESPN to broadcast some of the most anticipated WWE events each year, like WrestleMania, Summer Slam and the Royal Rumble as part of the pro wrestling giant's direct-to-consumer service launching in late August. McAfee is a big wrestling fan, having served as a commentator for the WWE. However, he stepped away from that earlier this year due to a busy schedule. But he is clearly aware of the deal, and he has never shied away from speaking his mind even after joining ESPN on a five-year, $85 million deal. "I don't got a motherf---ing boss," he said in the past. ESPN made another landmark deal in the world of sports. The network announced Tuesday it acquired the NFL Network in a deal that gave the league a 10% equity stake in ESPN. The deal includes the NFL's linear RedZone Channel, NFL Fantasy and more.
