Revealed: The cute nickname Princess Diana used for William – and the hilarious reason behind it, according to Harry
And like any adoring mother, she came up with pet names for them – which the princes undoubtedly found terribly embarrassing.
In an interview with NBC Today ahead of the Concert for Diana at Wembley Stadium on July 1, 2007, journalist Matt Lauer asked William about his childhood nickname: Wombat.
'She used to call you "Wombat" which is cute... when you're seven,' the American news personality quipped.
'Yeah,' an 25-year-old William begrudgingly replied.
'I guess you don't want your mates in the pub going, "Hey Wombat, how are you?' Matt said.
'It kind of stuck with me,' William admitted, 'I can't get rid of it now.'
The prince went on to reveal that his mother first started referring to him as Wombat during a six-week royal tour of Australia and New Zealand in 1983.
Prior to the fundraiser, the brothers had taken part in an interview with Matt Lauer on NBC Today
At two years old, William was still at the crawling stage when he flew 10,000 miles across the world to participate in his first major overseas visit.
Malcolm Fraser, the Australian Prime Minister at the time, had written to the Prince and Princess of Wales saying that he appreciated the problems facing the young family and invited them to bring the prince along as well.
Fraser's considerate gesture enabled the family to lengthen the visit from a four-week trip to a six-week tour of both Australia and New Zealand.
'The first foreign trip we took William to was Australia and New Zealand,' Diana told her biographer Andrew Morton. 'That was for six weeks.
'That was great – we were a family unit and everything was fine.
'It was very tricky, mentally, for me, because the crowds were just something to be believed.
'My husband had never seen crowds like it and I sure as hell hadn't and everyone kept saying it will all quieten down when you've had your first baby, and it never quietened down, never.'
During the visit William stayed at Woomargama, a 4,000-yard sheep station in New South Wales, with his nanny Barbara Barnes and assorted security personnel.
While his parents could only be with him during the occasional break in an otherwise busy schedule, Diana was happy to know that William was under the same skies.
'The wombat, you know, that's the local animal,' William explained to Lauer decades later ahead of the Concert for Diana. 'So I just basically got called that.
'Not because I look like a wombat. Or maybe I do.'
'You know what it was?' said Harry, jumping at the chance to wind up his older brother. 'He was still crawling at six.'
'He was?' asked Matt.
'He still couldn't walk,' Harry insisted. 'He was still lazy.'
Playing along with the brotherly banter, Matt turned to William and said: 'Alright, get him back. What's his nickname?'
Without missing a beat, William replied: 'Oh, Ginger.
'Whatever. You can call him whatever you want,' William added.
'Most of them I can't call in front of here. You know, a bit rude. He's got plenty.'
'Ginger?' Matt asked Harry.
To which the 21-year-old prince replied: 'I know exactly. You're as surprised as I am. I don't think I'm ginger.'
'Apart from the fact you are,' William interrupted.
'Shall we not?' Harry said in an attempt to end the conversation. 'Let's not.'
But William is correct in saying that Harry has 'plenty' of nicknames.
In his bombshell memoir Spare, Harry writes that his father and brother refer to him as 'Harold', despite the Duke of Sussex being christened as Henry Charles Albert David.
Throughout her Netflix series, Meghan Markle refers to her doting husband as 'H' or 'Haz' while his friends have been known to call him 'Spike'.
And during the Channel 5 documentary, William & Harry: Princes at War?, royal expert Robert Jobson divulged that Diana used to refer to her youngest son as 'GKH'.
'She used to refer to Harry as GKH (Good King Harry) because she thought he'd probably be better equipped for the role in the future than William.'
The acronym supposedly came to be when a young William confided in his mother that he 'didn't want to be king', and Harry happily offered to take on the role and its responsibilities instead.

Rosie O'Donnell fans react to her slimmed down figure
Rosie O'Donnell is marveling at the slimmed down figure she has achieved with the help of weight loss drug Mounjaro. The former talk show host, 63, has been taking the drug since late 2022, yet remains in disbelief over how far she has come. In her latest Instagram post, Rosie revealed she is now a size 12 - and praised the drug as a 'life saver'. Rosie showed off her dramatic results as she went shopping for a new travel outfit, her slimmed down body on display in a fitted black track suit. 'ok so went shopping to but a comfy lounge wear outfit for my 22 hour flight to Australia- was undecided as i cant see myself in this new smaller body- cam n robin took this photo of me in the dressing room - i am shocked im a 12 - #mounjaro is a life saver,' she gushed in the caption. Fans were equally impressed in the comments, with one merely stating 'WOW' (along with a few emojis) in response to the picture. Kristin Chenoweth also chimed in, writing: 'You look amazing!' Another wrote: 'It is a life changing med! Not only does it help you lose weight but decreases the inflammation in your body so you feel so much better. Rosie - you look great and hope you feel great too!!' One complimented her: ''I've been needing this for years but my insurance won't cover it. You look awesome-although your Beautiful soul shines through in ANY body.' Mounjaro 'is an injectable prescription medicine that is used along with diet and exercise to improve blood sugar (glucose) in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus,' per the official website. Back in March of this year, O'Donnell talked about her 'shocking' new size after taking the medication. In a TikTok video uploaded at the time, she explained to her followers: 'I am on Mounjaro for my diabetes and one of the side effects is you lose weight. 'But [the weight loss] is also because I had a chef for over two years in Los Angeles and I don't have a chef now. It's me cooking for [my child] Clay and me.' The TV personality then recalled how she went to a clothing store in Dublin and revealed she was a size large after previously wearing sizes XL or XXL. 'I find it shocking. I really do. I find it completely shocking,' the mom-of-five expressed. Being on Mounjaro has not only aided her in losing weight, but has made her feel 'healthier' and she is also 'sleeping better.' Back in January 2023, Rosie revealed she had been prescribed the medication and credited it with helping her drop 10 pounds during the holiday season. While taking her child to school, the star explained on TikTok: 'I need to let you know I've lost 10lbs since Christmas.' She added that she had been taking Mounjaro after a fan commented, 'You can't drop a bomb like that and not tell us HOW???' Rosie stated, 'Okay, so like two months ago, my doctor put me on... not Ozempic, Mounjaro? Something like that, and Repath.' She added, 'One I do every other week, and one I do once a week. And that and on Christmas, I stopped drinking anything except water.

Harry's like vacuous Meghan's hostage-in-the-attic – he's so lost he ruins EVERYTHING he touches, expert slams
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) PRINCE Harry acts like Meghan's hostage-in-the-attic and ruins everything he touches, an expert has claimed. The Sussexes announced yesterday they signed a new "multi-year, first look deal" with Netflix to produce "film and television projects". Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 9 Prince Harry is 'lost', according to a royal expert Credit: Reuters 9 Season 2 of Meghan's controversial cookery show will drop later this month Credit: Netflix 9 It is yet to be revealed whether Harry will appear in the second season Credit: BackGrid However, broadcaster and journalist Esther Krakue told The Sun's Royal Exclusive show how the Duke will be at the mercy of his wife. In harsh comments, she claimed Harry has "no value in terms of entertainment". "Harry is in the attic, he's a hostage, and thankfully he chewed through his leash just in time to make an appearance in the season two trailer," she told The Sun's royal editor Matt Wilkinson. "But he is nowhere to be seen. Yes, obviously, he's dealing with the fallout from his charity and trying to find his own thing. "But the man is lost. I mean, he's really trying to find his feet. "He has a kind of brown Midas touch, which I'm sure the viewers can infer what I mean by that. "And really, this creative side of this endeavor has really been Meghan's push." The expert added that she's interested to see how the Duchess handles directing - having remained in front of the camera on previous projects. Ms Krakue claimed the actress is used to being a "b-list presence in Hollywood", who remained in the "background". "If I was a Netflix executive and I was negotiating this new non-deal with Harry and Meghan," she continued. Harry & Meghan were 'not in a strong position' & signed Netflix deal for 'much less'… TV giant 'did it for publicity' "I'd probably want to throw my shoe at Harry because at least Meghan is entertaining in the sense that she's so vacuous, it's almost like you marvel at it. "But Harry's not a creative and he's never had anything in this industry. "And I think because he's come from a world where everyone fawns at everything that he does because he's Prince Harry. Ms Krakue highlighted Harry's Polo documentary flop "that really just didn't connect". 9 Prince Harry's polo documentary was watched by just 500,000 people Credit: Reuters 9 The couple trashed the Royal Family in their 2022 docuseries Credit: NETFLIX 9 The couple have signed a new deal with the streaming giant Credit: Splash The broadcaster estimated the streaming giant should have "sunk" it's funds into Meghan instead. "Even though she's not entertaining the way that she thinks she is," Ms Krakue added. "Harry just has, there's just nothing to him in terms of entertainment value. "And I think this is probably why Netflix are like, yeah, let's deal with the wife." It was previously thought that the Sussexes' £74million deal with the streamer was not going to be renewed. Harry's vanity project, Polo, about the sport, was watched by just 500,000 people. But it was also understood that bosses were mildly infuriated by Meghan making her As Ever brand a priority. 'Meghan & Harry need to come up with a hit soon' By Matt Wilkinson JUST when you thought it was safe to turn the telly on again... Harry and Meghan are back. And their multi-year renewal with Netflix means they are not going away anytime soon. There have been tense negotiations in recent weeks but Netflix is so deeply involved with Meghan's As Ever brand it was always likely that the streaming giants would want them back. Make no mistake, Harry and Meghan would have been desperate for the deal to be renewed. They will likely be opening a bottle or two of As Ever Rose in Montecito. Because they have invested heavily in Archewell Productions and getting on board with Netflix is central not only to their post-Royal endeavours but more importantly crucial to their bank accounts. If they lost their Netflix money then how could they afford their life in the US? While the length of the deal or how much the couple are getting paid is vague we do know that Meghan will appear in a 'holiday special' in December that will likely clash with the Princess of Wales's annual Christmas carol concert at Westminster Abbey. And finally, two years after I revealed in The Sun the couple had bought the rights to the book Meet Me At The Lake, production is in active development. Sources close to the couple are coy about whether Harry or Meghan will appear on screen for the production of Masaka Kids, A Rhythm Within which will air later this year. But perhaps the best piece of news from the announcement is no repeat of the six-part documentary which dumped on the Royal Family. However, 'Harry & Meghan' was a ratings dream and none of their projects since have been anywhere as successful. They need to come up with a hit soon. And this 'first look' deal means Netflix has the first option on new projects from the couple without any guaranteed commitment. But remember the Sussexes are not the only Royals to be in bed with Netflix. The King will feature in a documentary on The King's Foundation with Idris Elba. The With Love, Meghan viewing figures have reportedly been "dismal". The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have previously released a number of shows on the platform, including a 2022 documentary on their lives and lifestyle show With Love, Meghan this year. They had secured a lucrative five-year contract - thought to be worth more than $100 million (£74 million) - with Netflix after quitting as senior working royals in 2020. However, a new deal has been signed for "much less", an insider told Page Six. Meghan said in a statement: 'We're proud to extend our partnership with Netflix and expand our work together to include the As Ever brand. "My husband and I feel inspired by our partners who work closely with us and our Archewell Productions team to create thoughtful content across genres that resonates globally, and celebrates our shared vision.' 'DOWNGRADE' Netflix will only pay for projects they want to screen, rather than pay in a single multi-million pound agreement like the one signed in 2020, The Sun understands. The Sun can also reveal, however, that the streaming giants will cover Archewell Productions's overheads, including all costs for its offices and staff. The new deal was also described as a "downgrade" by PR expert Mark Borkowski. He told the Mail: "I think Netflix has done a very neat job of pivoting away from two very expensive people who didn't deliver, and they've taken that deal off the table, and they've given them a modest one. "It's not like they're gradually uncoupling – it's a downgrade. Netflix are not going to expose themselves to those budgets again. It's Netflix saying, 'Let's have a look at your content, but we'll pick and choose, mate'." CRINGE NEW TRAILER This comes as mum-of-two Meghan teased a new trailer for her critically panned Netflix show. Footage showed the Duchess with a host of famous guests speaking about how she "loves finding new ways to show people she cares" ahead of the release of the second series of With Love, Meghan on August 26. The show's second series claims it will be "fun and heartwarming", with plethora of celebrity guests due to make their appearance. This includes model Chrissy Teigen, podcast pal Jamie Kern Lima, and Netflix Queer Eye star Tan France. Meghan can be seen laughing alongside guests at her luxury Montecito home in the trailer, even joking at the end about Prince Harry's lack of love for lobster. Speaking to Chef Andrés, she says: "You know who doesn't like lobster? My husband." In response, the chef light-heartedly retorts: "And you married him anyway?" In one cringey moment during the trailer, in which she is seen cooking and baking with celebrity friends, the Duchess of Sussex also says: "I love the idea of just spending time together... and finding new ways to show people you care." She adds: "There are easy ways to show up, lovingly." On top of Season 2 of With Love, Meghan - which will drop later this month - the couple will also film a "Holiday Celebration" Christmas special. The couple will also release a short film called "Masaka Kids, A Rhythm Within" which will look at Uganda's Masaka region and the HIV/AIDS crisis there. This has echoes of Harry's mum Diana's work, who pioneered social change on perceptions of HIV/AIDS. 9 The second season Meghan Markle's show With Love, Meghan is due to be released on August 26 Credit: JAKE ROSENBERG/NETFLIX 9 The trailer sees Meghan cooking, baking and creating drinks with celebrity friends Credit: COURTESY OF NETFLIX
