Kathmandu braces for opposing rallies as ruling UML and Royalists set to hit streets, security beefed
The Communist Party of Nepal- Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML) have called for a cultural parade from Bhrikutimandap to Ratnapark in celebration of Republic Day.

The rally is expected to be attended by party leaders, cadres, and artists showcasing cultural processions promoting the republican system. The rally has been routed through the venue where the royalists will be starting their indefinite protest starting today, calling for the restoration of the monarchy.
The royalist and Hindu nationalist parties, including Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) and RPP-Nepal, along with over 45 other aligned organisations, have announced protests against the republic.
The main protest is being organised by the Joint People's Movement Committee for the Restoration of Monarchy, led by Navaraj Subedi. The committee has said that the protest will start from Shanti Batika near the iconic "RPokhari" translated as Queen's Pond.
Although both sides have pledged peaceful rallies, tensions have risen following a controversial statement by Prime Minister
, who claimed that Kathmandu would be "under UML's control" on Republic Day, prompting backlash from royalist leaders.
The royalist leaders had announced that the protest would be peaceful, but raised concerns over potential state suppression in light of the prime minister's remarks.
To manage potential unrest, authorities have prepared to deploy 4,500 security personnel throughout Kathmandu. Traffic disruptions and public inconvenience are expected in the core areas of the city.
In the wake of the possible conflict between the parties, the District Security Committee of Kathmandu has scheduled the programs at different times.

Kathmandu Chief District Officer (CDO) Rishiram Tiwari coordinated with Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) Chairman Rajendra Lingden, who agreed to start the royalist event only after UML's program ends. Kathmandu police chief SSP Bishwa Adhikari stated that a security plan has been prepared in coordination with both parties.
Lingden confirmed to the CDO that the pro-monarchy program will commence in the afternoon and that preparations are being made accordingly. UML has also been instructed to conclude its event by the scheduled time.

By speaking ill of Mr. Santhosh, a section of activists has defamed the entire Rashtriya Swayam Sevaks. Statements hurting religious sentiments of devotees have continued, as the State government has failed to act tough against 'fictitious reporting' and 'derogatory' comments against the Dharmasthala temple and the revered 'Annappa' spirit, in connection with the probe by the Special Investigation Team on the mass burial issue, the MLA said. Mr. Poonja reiterated the demand for reinvestigation into rape and murder of Soujanya and punishment for the real accused. The Special CBI Court acquitted the lone accused, Santosh Rao, in 2024 for want of evidence. The Karnataka High Court then turned down the demand for a reinvestigation of the case.

Scientific temper important to fully claim Right to Life: Retd Supreme Court Judge Abhay Oka
Scientific temper is important to completely claim the Right to Life, said retired Supreme Court Judge Abhay Oka while delivering the Dr Narendra Dabholkar Memorial Lecture in Pune on Sunday. Oka emphasised that Article 21 of the Indian Constitution guaranteed the Right to Life with dignity and prosperity, and that a scientific temper was important to fully claim these rights. Oka said, 'If Article 21 of the Constitution has given us a Right to Life with dignity, what does it mean? It is not just living with respect but also living meaningfully. Reading good literature and good thoughts, artwork, watching a comedy film or a stand-up comedian's show, this makes life prosperous. This is how we fulfill the Right to Life. Therefore, it is important to develop a scientific temper and spirit of enquiry to fully claim the Right to Life with prosperity.' The retired judge also talked about how people use scientific equipment in their daily lives but do not develop a scientific temper: 'In Article 51(a) of the Constitution where scientific temper, humanism and the spirit of inquiry and reform come together…Just using scientific equipment does not mean that people have scientific temper. In a lighter vein, DJs are used in many of our festivals. These hurt the ears and are their levels much above the permitted decibel limits according to the rules. DJ systems are created by science, but just because we are using it we cannot say that we have scientific temper.' At the same event, Retired Supreme Court Judge Hemant Gokhale said, 'We killed Dr Dabhokar, also killed comrade (Govind) Pansare. This is the disposition of Maharashtra today. And the way minority and minority religion people are being harassed, this is against scientific temper…You all must have read that day before in Jamner, a young man was killed because he belonged to a religion. What kind of scientific temper is this?' The lecture was held before the 12th anniversary of the assasination of Dr Narendra Dabholkar on August 20, who was one of India's foremost rationalists and anti-superstition activists. Dabholkar was gunned down in Pune in 2013 while on a walk. Two people were convicted for his murder in 2024 by a special court in Pune while three others, including the mastermind accused, were acquitted due to lack of evidence. All accused had links to extremist Hindu organisation Sanatan Sanstha. MANS and Dabholkar's family have questioned the CBI for not appealing the acquittals in higher courts.

Foreign Secretary Misri calls on Nepal PM Oli, hands over invite for India visit
Kathmandu/New Delhi, Aug 17 (UNI) Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, who is visiting Kathmandu, called on Nepalese Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli today and formally handed over an invitation for his India visit. During the meeting with Oli at the latter's office in Singha Durbar, Misri handed him the invitation letter on behalf of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, according to the Prime Minister's Secretariat. "During the courtesy meeting with Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri handed over an invitation letter from the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, to Oli. Prime Minister Oli thanked him for the invitation," the PM's Secretariat told Nepalkhabar. The Indian side has proposed September 16-17 for Oli's India visit. However, the dates for the visit have not yet been finalised. Misri arrived on a two-day official visit to Nepal in the morning at the invitation of his Nepali counterpart Amrit Bahadur Rai. He paid courtesy calls on President Ram Chandra Paudel, Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba, CPN (Maoist Centre) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' and Foreign Minister Dr Arzu Rana Deuba. Misri called on President Ramchandra Paudel at the President's Office, Sheetal Niwas, today. On the occasion, Paudel said Nepal has benefitted from India's progress as a close neighbour and friend, and expressed hope for greater benefits in the future. 'As a rising international power, India's progress in socio-economic and technological fields has made us happy and encouraged. As a close friend and neighbour, Nepal has benefitted from India's achievements and seeks to gain more,' Paudel's Press Advisor Kiran Pokharel quoted him as saying. Highlighting the longstanding social, cultural, religious, spiritual, economic, and people-to-people ties between the two nations, President Paudel said Nepal-India relations are based on sovereign equality, friendly cooperation, mutual respect and trust. He added that Nepal has always placed high priority on its relations with India and appreciates India's 'Neighborhood First' policy. According to the President's Press Advisor, Misri said under PM Modi's policy of prioritising neighbouring countries, Nepal holds an important place. Misri also expressed confidence that his visit would provide an opportunity to discuss enhancing connectivity for mutual progress and development in the modern era, thereby further strengthening bilateral relations. Misri also paid a courtesy call on CPN (Maoist Centre) and former Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal at the latter's personal residence in Lalitpur, according to Dahal's secretariat. During the meeting, they exchanged views on various dimensions of Nepal-India relations. FS Misri and his Nepalese counterpart Amrit Bahadur Rai held a bilateral meeting this evening. During the meeting, the two secretaries discussed various issues of bilateral cooperation ranging from connectivity to trade, and development collaboration to bilateral partnership, reinforcing the robust bond between the two countries. "The discussions covered a wide range of issues, including connectivity, trade and development cooperation, underscoring the strong bond between the two nations," the Nepalese Foreign Ministry said. Earlier after his arrival in the morning, Misri performed a special puja at the Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu. Misri will return home on Monday, wrapping up his two-day visit to Nepal.
