Kathmandu braces for opposing rallies as ruling UML and Royalists set to hit streets, security beefed
Kathmandu is bracing for two opposition rallies on Thursday, one led by the ruling CPN-UML and the other by the royalists as the nation marks Republic Day.
The Communist Party of Nepal- Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML) have called for a cultural parade from Bhrikutimandap to Ratnapark in celebration of Republic Day.

The rally is expected to be attended by party leaders, cadres, and artists showcasing cultural processions promoting the republican system. The rally has been routed through the venue where the royalists will be starting their indefinite protest starting today, calling for the restoration of the monarchy.
The royalist and Hindu nationalist parties, including Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) and RPP-Nepal, along with over 45 other aligned organisations, have announced protests against the republic.
The main protest is being organised by the Joint People's Movement Committee for the Restoration of Monarchy, led by Navaraj Subedi. The committee has said that the protest will start from Shanti Batika near the iconic "RPokhari" translated as Queen's Pond.
Although both sides have pledged peaceful rallies, tensions have risen following a controversial statement by Prime Minister
, who claimed that Kathmandu would be "under UML's control" on Republic Day, prompting backlash from royalist leaders.
The royalist leaders had announced that the protest would be peaceful, but raised concerns over potential state suppression in light of the prime minister's remarks.
To manage potential unrest, authorities have prepared to deploy 4,500 security personnel throughout Kathmandu. Traffic disruptions and public inconvenience are expected in the core areas of the city.
In the wake of the possible conflict between the parties, the District Security Committee of Kathmandu has scheduled the programs at different times.

Kathmandu Chief District Officer (CDO) Rishiram Tiwari coordinated with Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) Chairman Rajendra Lingden, who agreed to start the royalist event only after UML's program ends. Kathmandu police chief SSP Bishwa Adhikari stated that a security plan has been prepared in coordination with both parties.
Lingden confirmed to the CDO that the pro-monarchy program will commence in the afternoon and that preparations are being made accordingly. UML has also been instructed to conclude its event by the scheduled time.

New York [US], June 5 (ANI): Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, who is leading an all-party delegation to the United States on Thursday, expressed scepticism about the role of mediation in conflicts involving terrorism, emphasising that there can be no equivalence between terrorists and their victims. Tharoor stressed that there's no moral or factual equivalence between countries harbouring terrorism and those affected by it. When asked if it is helpful to have the United States available as a mediator between India and Pakistan, Tharoor said, 'Mediation is not a term that we are particularly willing to entertain. You're implying an equivalence that simply doesn't exist. There is no equivalence between terrorists and their victims. There is no equivalence between a country that provides a safe haven to terrorism and a country that's a flourishing multi-party democracy that's trying to get on with its business.' He highlighted the complexities of international diplomacy, suggesting that any influence the US might have had would be more effective if applied to the side supporting terrorism. He acknowledged the US government's interest and concern, noting that diplomatic efforts might have been more impactful if directed at the party supporting terrorist activities. Tharoor speculated that the US might have had more influence on the side that needed persuading to stop supporting terrorism. 'My government received a number of calls at high levels from the US government and we appreciated their concern and their interest. At the same time, they must have been making similar calls at the highest levels to the Pakistan side. Because that's the side that needed persuading to stop this process, that may well have been where their messages really had the greatest effect. But that's guesswork on my part. I don't know what they said to the Pakistanis...,' said Tharoor. Speaking about how India, time and again, conveyed information through proper and authentic channels of communication, Tharoor noted that the Indian side had regular, systematic briefings by civil and military officers. He brought to attention that the briefings were conducted by women officers from the military, one of whom is a Muslim, thereby stating, 'This is not a Hindu versus Muslim, it is United India against terror, and that message came across very well'. 1 2 Trichy: No govt has funded temple events as much as the 'Dravidian model' govt did, and tactics to project the govt as 'anti-Hindu' have failed, HR&CE minister P K Sekarbabu told reporters in Nagapattinam on Thursday. He was speaking after participating in the 3,000th temple consecration held under the DMK govt at the millennium-old Agnipuriswarar temple in Thirupugalu. School education minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi also participated. Sekarbabu said the number of temple consecrations under this govt will cross 3,500 by year-end. "The Dravidian model govt has been funding temple development, facilities, religious events, and devotee welfare activities like no other govt. The funding is increasing every year. Chief minister M K Stalin is ready to provide more funds," he said. On allegations by right-wing movements that DMK govt is 'anti-Hindu,' he said: "They tried to weaponize such criticism against the govt. The 3,000th consecration is the answer." Accompanied by officials, Sekarbabu inspected several temples and inaugurated new buildings and facilities in the past two days. At Thulasiyapattinam near Vedaranyam, he inspected the construction of Avvaiyar Manimandapam in progress at Rs19 crore.

Madhya Pradesh Cabinet Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya has stirred up the hornet's nest yet again. At a recent public event held in Indore, Vijayvargiya said he didn't 'like girls who wear skimpy clothes'. In a speech he made at the event, Vijayvargiya, a senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Madhya Pradesh's minister for urban development and parliamentary affairs, drew comparisons between Indian and Western culture, saying: 'Here in India, we consider a girl beautiful when she dresses well, wears jewellery, and adorns herself gracefully. In the West, a woman wearing fewer clothes is considered beautiful. I don't agree with that'. Continuing his comparison, he said: 'There's a saying in Western countries that a woman who wears fewer clothes is considered very beautiful, just as a leader who speaks less is considered good. But I don't believe in that. I believe a woman is a form of the goddess. She should wear nice clothes. I don't find women in revealing clothes attractive'. While attending a Hanuman Jayanti event in Indore in 2023, he remarked: 'I won't lie on Hanuman Jayanti… but girls these days wear such filthy clothes… We call women goddesses, but they don't appear that way… They look like Shurpanakha (a demoness from Hindu mythology). God has given you a beautiful body, at least wear decent clothes. Teach your children values'.
